    Notes:

Death of Mr. James Gourlay - On Tuesday morning last this well-known resident of Galt died from a severe attack of inflammation of the lungs, after an illness of about four days. Deceased was long and most favorably known in Galt. Coming to Canada from Glasgow in 1842, he occupied a farm for a little over a year near Carlton Place. In 1844 he first came to reside here, at once entering the newly-established Foundry, (then back of the Dumfries Mills), of James Crombie & Co. In his capacity of Machinist, he continued in Mr. Crombie's employ until about the year 1854, when he left Galt and went to Varna, where he established a Plough Factory. The country was too new for success, however, and the "Vance" Flouring Mill in Clinton requiring a competent practical machinist to attend to it, Mr. Crombie at once recommended Mr. Gourlay, who assumed the position, retaining it for about four years. He then left Clinton and assumed his old position in Mr. Crombie's Foundry at Galt, then about passing into the hands of Messrs. Goldie & McCulloch where he continued as foreman for many years, during which time all the heavy machinery for the Hamilton Rolling Mills was turned out. In their employ he remained until his son, Mr. John Gourlay, in 1872, entered into partnership with the late Adam Cant, and established the Galt Machine Works, when he left the establishment of Messrs. Goldie & McCulloch and entered the workshop of the new firm, with whom he has continued until his death. Mr. Gourlay was a skillful mechanic, and remarkable for the steadiness with which he was to be found at his work. As a private citizen he was very unassuming. Trades are said to run in families, and in this case it would certainly seem to be so. Mr. John Gourlay, the eldest son, the second son, James, dying about ten years ago, is one of the firm of Cant, Gourlay & Co.; Mr. Alex. Gourlay is foreman machinist, and Mr. Wm. Gourlay, a moulder in the same works. Of Mr. Gourlay's four daughters one is married to Mr. Wm. Ewart, of Oshawa; one to Mr. John Kirk, and the two youngest are yet at home.
