Her church work will long be remembered and in spite of her serious illness just a few days previous to her demise, she personally directed and supervised the packing of a shipment of goods for missionaries. Her interest in children's welfare work was shown in her founding of the Livingston Camp for children at Baden and also the founding of other boys' and girls' camps throughout Ontario.

Besides her immediate family she is survived by three sisters and three brothers: Misses Lizzy, Alfreda and Clara, Mrs. Fowler all of Baden, William Holwell of Stratford, Harry of Toronto and Walter of Baden. Stewart of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Kitchener, was in charge. Mr. Forbes Thompson, student minister in Baden, red the scripture lesson and Rev. Mr. Thompson of Elora representing the Guelph Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church, led in prayer. Music was furnished by the choir of St. Andrew's Church, Kitchener, who sang three very appropriate numbers: Solo, "Jesus Lover of My Soul", choir, "When I survey the Wondrous Cross" and "Abide With Me". Members of the Ladies' Aid, both present and past, formed a guard of honor both at the church and cemetery as did the flower bearers and employees of the Dominion Linseed Oil Company. The massive banks of flowers bore a silent tribute to one whose usefulness and service to the community and church will long be remembered. Interment was made in Fairmount Cemetery, south of Baden.

JAMES LIVINGSTON, M.P.P., of Baden, is a native of Lanarkshire, Scotland, where he was born in 1838. Receiving a parish education, and spending some time at his father's trade of weaving, he came to Canada, and after a year spent in Mornington, Perth County, he entered the employ of Messrs. M. B. & J. S. Perrine, of Conestogo, where he was several years engaged as foreman in their flax manufacturing establishment. In 1865, in company with his elder brother John, he commenced flax growing at Wellesley Village, from which their business extended, until now they cultivate about 3,000 acres of that plant annually in different parts of the county. For the past seven years these gentlemen have carried on flax and linseed oil manufacturing at Baden, of which village they own the major part. The subject of our sketch has taken a very conspicuous part in public affairs as well, and during several terms has presided as Reeve of Wilmot. In June, 1879, he was elected to the Ontario Legislature for South Waterloo, as the candidate of the Liberal party, since which time he has held the seat in that body, discharging its duties with a degree of ability highly complimentary to himself and satisfactory to his constituents.

    A Fine House

The magnificent house of Mr. James Livingstone, Baden, is rapidly approaching completion. It will be, when fully completed, a marvel of beauty and convenience- large rooms, tastefully decorated in fresco work, and with hot and cold running water in all the rooms, bath rooms, steam-heating apparatus, gas fixtures etc. it will be the finest and most comfortable residence in the County. The only thing to be regretted about it is its exceeding plainness outside, no hint being given to the observer of the grandeur, within, though that to some would be a charm. A side- tower, in our opinion, have added greatly to its beauty, and helped to harmonize the external with the internal. It is a great wonder the owner ever would have erected such a residence where he has. One would have thought he would have chosen a larger town with its social, educational, and religious advantages, as the site for such a home- Berlin for instance. It would be so easy to live here and to go to and from business etc. But the owner knows his business best. We only throw out the hint the "any other man" may not make what we consider a great mistake.

The late Mr. Holwell was a member of the A. F. & A. M., being a past District Deputy Grand Master. He was also a member of the K.O.T.M. and a Presbyterian in religion. Notes:

These Local Superintendents and their successors in office, who administered and directed the educational affairs of this county from 1853 to 1871, when the office was abolished, have not, in the opinion of the writer, received from the public the credit for their work to which they were entitled. They were all educated, broad-minded, unselfish men, ever ready and willing to assist and advise the teacher and explain the almost unexplainable school law to the trustees. The obstacles which they were continually encountering, in the performance of their duties, were many and difficult.

In this connection special mention is due Rev. James Sims Local Superintendent for Wellesley for twelve years and chairman of the Board of Public Instruction for eight Messrs. Robert Brydon, Otto Klotz, Henry Liersch, James Colquhoun, Rev. Duncan McRuer, Rev. Geo. Cuthbertson, Rev. James Boyd, Henry F. J. Jackson and Isaac L. Bowman.

    ________________________

In March of 1851, the name of "Der Deutschen Evangelishe Lutherische Emmanuels Gemeinde" was used, which translated word for word means, "The German Evangelical Lutheran Emmanuel's Congregation". For many years after, the congregation's name was misspelled "Immanuel's" or mistakenly known as "St. Emmanuel's" or "St. Immanuel's Church". Or was it not misspelled? If you take into consideration that Rev. Immanuel Wurster was our pastor and president as the church was being built, it is understandable why it was referred to as "Immanuel's Congregation". Subscriptions to financing and materials of the new church were now accepted, and the construction began in June of that year.

The main contributors were: Nicolaus Busch, Christoph Seeger, Peter Wilker, Johannes Koch Sr., Johannes Koch Jr., Ludwig Zöger, Nicolaus Klein, Heinrich Liersch, Michael Karrer, W. Schrönan, Conrad Siebert, Abel Müller, Jacob Kollmann, Johannes Lippert, Adam Seyler and Johannes Bauer.

    Notes:

    The Late John Ernst

John Ernst, Sr., who died at New Hamburg on the 1st inst., was born at Grand Village, near Belford, Lorraine, France, on the 4th of Dec., 1807. He emigrated to America in the year 1827, landing in New York in the same year, where he remained but one year, long enough to enable him to learn the English language somewhat. He came to Wilmot township in 1838 where he took up land, cleared his lot, and remained on the same for a long time. During his time there the cholera (1837) broke out, and while the sad epidemic lasted he helped to bury many of his neighbours, even making coffins from rough lumber and taking them to the burying ground with his ox team, and attending to the burial all by himself. After that he removed to Petersburg, where he engaged in the general store business and hotel keeping. Some time after that he owned and run the New Dundee mills, also the tannery at Petersburg. He was a man of good judgement, and a man on whose word you could rely. Any appointment he made he was sure to fulfill; he was a man of temperate habits although a hotel keeper for over 40 years. Some years ago he withdrew from actual business pursuits, but was always ready to enter into conversation on the topics of the day, as well as render any assistance where needed if at all in his power to do so. About six weeks ago he was attacked with bronchitis, then heart trouble set in from which he never rallied. Although far advanced in years he bore his sufferings with Christian fortitude and was prepared to meet his Maker. In years gone by he held different municipal offices, was Justice of the Peace and also issuer of marriage licences. He was postmaster at Petersburg for 44 years, and was one of the first postmasters in the County of Waterloo. In politics he was a staunch Conservative, and was ever ready to do a good turn for his party. He belonged to the Masonic fraternity and was an old member of that body. His remains were taken to Petersburg, for internment on Wednesday Feb. 3rd. He leaves one daughter and three sons to mourn his loss; his wife preceded him some fifteen years ago.
