He came to Bloomingdale in 1849 and was in the employ of Samuel Bauman at the woollen mill. He was married to Lydia Bauman in 1851. On June 7, 1861 Wm. Erb became the owner of 237 acres, Lot 5 James Wilson Tract from this father-in-law Samuel B. Bauman, which he farmed until it was sold in 1884. A sawmill was erected sometime between 1866-1872, and a cheese factory became another industry of the village. A furniture factory (formerly the woollen mill) was started by Mr. Erb. Lots were developed for the increasing population.

The Erb family were active members of the United Brethren Church at Bloomingdale. Mr. Erb was a trustee for S. S. No. 12 and was appointed collector of School Taxes. He was a kindly man and was esteemed highly by friends and neighbors. Mr. Erb and members of his family departed from Bloomingdale to make a new home at South River, Parry Sound District.

SAMUEL B. BAUMANN came from Pennsylvania in 1826 and settled on the west half of Lot 5 James Wilson Tract on the site of the nresent village of Bloomingdale. It has not been definitely established who named the village. It may have been an early settler from Pennsylvania after a post hamlet of that name in Lancaster County.

''And when these toils rewarding Broad lands at length they'll claim And call the new possession By some familiar name". ----- Agnes Strickland.

A local story handed down for generations says that Samuel Baumann was so imoressed by the beauty and profusion of wild plum blossoms when he arrived that he exclaimed "Der blotz sed B1umendahl haesa" (This place should be called Bloomingdale).

Samuel Baumann was an enterprising character and had a woollen mill in operation prior to 1840. This industry attracted immigrants who came to Canada in large numbers at this time, and before long a small hamlet was formed. His death occurred in 1866 and he is buried in the Mennonite Cemetery, Bloomingdale.
