    ______________

    JOHN BECKER.

The subject of this sketch is the proprietor of the Royal Exchange at the G.T.R. station. He was born in the Province of Hesse Darmstadt, Germany, on Aug 3, 1842 He came to this country with his parents in 1856. His first work in this country was as a blacksmith in Waterloo. He also was employed for some time in Heidelberg and from there in 1877 he went to Baden, where he worked at his trade. In 1883 he returned to Waterloo, where he was engaged at blacksmithing and carriage work and for two years in the foundry. He finally took charge of the Queen's Hotel in that town, which he conducted with good success for four years. After this he was employed as travelling salesman for farming implements. Subsequently he worked in the New Hamburg foundry three years and in 1894 he went to Castle, where he was employed for four years. On February 11, 1896, be took charge of the Royal Exchange, Hamburg. While he is an experienced blacksmith, he shows ripe experience as a hotel man, as there are no better kept hotels in the country than the Royal Exchange, under his management. It is the most pleasantly located in the village and in addition to this feature the interior is decidedly inviting for the weary soul and a good appetite. The sleeping apartments are comfortably and neatly furnished and carpeted. The tables in the scrupulously clean and nicely arranged dining room are always bountifully supplied with wholesome and well-cooked food.

Mr. Becker is a typical German, good natured, and is always the same one day with another.
