    Notes:

Novelty has been the keynote of Noah M. Steinman's life. When he went into business in Baden in 1905, he didn't stick merely to one line of goods. He sold groceries, stock feed and lime and cement. Because there was a demand for the service, three years later Mr. Steinman became a licenced undertaker and embalmer. This probably makes him the oldest mortician in point of service in the county. [Steinman funeral business records date from 1904.] This week the link with the undertaking business was broken when he sold the good will to the Twin City firm of Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Service. At 77, though, he needs something to keep him active so he has retained the furniture store and novelty shop which he opens every day. Last July he broke his ankle and although that has incapacitated Mr. Steinman somewhat, it hasn't kept him away from the store.

Besides an active business life Mr. Steinman always had enough time and public spirit to engage actively in Baden public life. Gideon Bechtel, father of Orton Bechtel, one of the partners in the Ratz-Bechtel firm [Ratz-Bechtel is in Kitchener] was one of the founders of the Wilmot Municipal Telephone System. When the late Mr. Bechtel gave up his directorship of the telephone systems, Mr. Steinman was elected in his place. During his tenure the company progressed, adding a new exchange building and switching board. Mr. Steinman has not been on the directorate for some years now. It is significant that his [telephone?] number is one.

The name Steinman is synonymous with firefighting in Baden. He was a fireman when the firefighting apparatus was an old hand pumper and reel. He was given a commission by the village trustees to organize a brigade to man the first pumper bought by the village. He forgets the year. However, it was a well-turned-out brigade of volunteers with natty uniforms which they bought themselves. And speaking of buying things, the brigade members contributed half the money to buy the second pumper some years later '96 or else the pumper wouldn't have been bought. Today, the need of good firefighting apparatus is seen, and a large water-carrying machine is housed in the fire hall. Mr. Steinman was born on the farm now owned by William Miller on the Baden outskirts. It was then owned by his grandfather, Chris Miller. Old Chris Miller was a hardy old character. His leg became caught in a threshing machine and he was taken to Tavistock where a doctor later proved a quack '96 cut it off with no anesthetic. Later, he continued work with an artificial leg. The leg is one of the large number of curios and antiques Mr. Steinman has in various places around the Baden store.

Next to the Miller farm lived one of Baden's most illustrious sons, Adam Beck. Sir Adam was one of those who carried on the battle to obtain hydro for Ontario as a public utility. Mrs. Steinman recalls that although Beck reached the heights of the civil service and political work he never forgot Baden. More than once he returned to the village for a good old-fashioned sauerkraut supper. Whenever anyone wants to track down any of Baden's history, he heads for Mr. Steinman's place. He has minute books and pictures of historical interest in a couple of large scrap books. One of the books is prefaced by the sage advice: "The only thing costly about good farm implements is trying to get along without them." He has trouble hanging onto some of the valuable curios. One things that disappeared was a model steam engine made by Adam Beck. Another was the first survey map of Baden and Wilmot made in 1856 by Adam's father Jacob. It was taken by Ontario hydro men and not returned. But there are still enough interesting old pieces and enough interest in the stories of Mr. Steinman for the historically minded to pay him a visit any time.

A-1-19 Rudolph Roth: Last Will and Testament of Rudolph Roth of Wilmot Township, translated from the original written in German.

…. I the undersigned Rudolph Roth, dwelling in the Township of Wilmot, though being sick and weak in body, yet possessed of my good understanding, and also powers of recollection, memory and judgement….Whereas I am a mortal man, and I know not how soon I must leave this world, I hereby make and declare these presents as my last will and testament as follows. First that my children which I do leave behind do walk at all times in the fear of God, in peace, love, humanity and in the right Christian and brotherly union, and first of all strife after the Kingdom of God and after his righteousness, and when the Giver of all good gifts will give as much unto you at all times, as you shall stand in need of…Secondly shall my wife Maria Litwiller have the privilege to take out of the household whatever she will for her use and benefit as long as she lives. Thirdly that my wife has the right to build a house for her support after her desire as long as she lives, and that my Executors must assist her in the building and must pay for it out of the undivided Estate left. Fourthly shall of the Estate left, the debts being paid, my wife have to draw the third part as long as she lives, for her benefit, and the other two parts which are left, are to be divided among my children, and one shall have like as the other. Fifthly, that the place shall remain under my sons and not be sold, but my son Christian shall have the first right the place to rent or to take at a middle equitable price as it is right and Christianlike, but should Christian deem it too heavy for him to take and buy the place, then he shall take it in Lease until my son Joseph is on age, that they can take the place together. But, in case son Christian take alone the place, it is my will that my Executor allow him easy terms and drive him not too hard, but after a Christianlike and brotherly manner. While my wife draws the third part, he [Christian] shall pay out of the other two parts to the other children as much as either of them is to have, and after the death of the mother he shall pay the remaining third part in easy terms, of which one has to draw as much as the other. Sixthly, he shall keep for the mother one cow in pasture, to go with his own, also to keep her through the winter and feed her with hay, also for her own maintenance to give her every year twenty five bushels of good fall wheat, ten bushels of oats, three hundred pounds of pork with lard, twenty five dozen of eggs, the third part of the fruitage, to plant two bushels of potatoes and them to plough, to dig out and put into the cellar, the fourth part of the kitchen garden and also to manure it. He also must give her sixteen pounds of good wool, also to sow one Peg of Flax Seed, likewise, has the mother the right as long as she lives to have her firewood cut down on the land as much as she wants, and he must haul it for her and put it into the woodshed. All the above he has to deliver to the mother every year for her maintenance as her third part, but in case that he takes the place for some time into lease and the third part of the rent doth not reach as high as he must give to the mother, then my Executors must allow him to deduct so much from the rent charges, but in case my wife stands in need for more than the above mentioned, then my Executors shall have the right to give her so much more out of the whole undivided property. Minor children, namely Joseph and Magdalene stand under the oversight of the Executors, until they be on age, and my daughter Magdalene shall nurse the mother and remain with her until she be on age. As my Executors I nominate Nicolas Lichty and John Hundrich.
