    Death of John P. Ernst.

The grim reaper who has been busy in our town during the past week, has called away another of our prominent citizens in the person of Mr. John P. Ernst, who died at his home here on Wednesday forenoon. Although having been seriously ill last fall, Mr. Ernst had so far recovered that he was able to be up and around, and it was believed that he was on a fair way to full recovery. He was suddenly stricken with paralysis during Sunday night and passed away without regaining consciousness, The late Mr. Ernst was in his 63rd year, being born in New Hamburg on March 7th, 1862. He was the second son of the late Christian Ernst, former postmaster of this town, and spent all his life in New Hamburg. For some years he carried on a commission merchant business and later inaugurated the local rural telephone system, which he conducted for about 20 years until he sold out about two years ago to the Township of Wilmot. During these years he was also local manager of the Bell Telephone system. He was married to Jane Cole, daughter of Mr. Herman Cole. Besides his sorrowing widow he leaves one daughter, Mrs. Clayton Ingle of Baden, to mourn his demise. He is also survived by two brothers, Mr. Jacob Ernst and Mr. H. A. Ernst, both of this town. The funeral took place from his late home on Saturday afternoon at 2.30 o'clock to Riverside Cemetery.

    Notes:

Death of Mr. Christian Ernst, Postmaster

Early on Tuesday morning the news spread over our town, announcing the death of Mr. Christian Ernst, postmaster, which was received with deep regret by the whole community, as his numerous friends in the village and vicinity did not expect that the end would come so soon, as on the previous day he was resting well until after midnight, when he grew suddenly worse; his family was then summoned to his bedside and at the hour of three o'clock he passed peacefully away, at the age of 65 years. Deceased was born in Petersburg, Wilmot Township, and was the second son of the late John Ernst, Esq., of the prominent family, which was widely known throughout this district in the early days of this country. In 1854 he was married to Catherine Wilker, and for a number of years he carried on an extensive merchant and milling business in the village of New Dundee until 1862, when he removed with his family to this town and entered into business here in a general store of dry goods and hardware, and was also connected with the flax-milling business in Zurich and other places in Huron county. He held the postmastership of this village for thirty-three years and in that office he was a faithful servant to the Government and the public. For a number of years he was a member of our town council and lent a helping hand for the promotion of the welfare and the best interest of the town. In religion he was an active member of the Lutheran church. He leaves a wife and three sons, Jacob, a partner in the firm of Ernst & Cressman; John P., who officiates as his deputy in the post office, and Henry A., a representative of Eby, Blain & Co., Toronto, who mourn the loss of a kind husband and father. They have the sympathy of the community in their sad bereavement. His remains will be laid to rest in the village cemetery this afternoon at two o'clock.

    DOON SCHOOL OF FINE ARTS.

After Homer Watson's sister , Phoebe Amelia Watson, died on Oct. 22nd, 1947, in her 90th year the property was sold to Mr. and Mrs. Ross Hamilton, who started and ran the Doon School of Fine Arts.

Mayor Ross Hamilton, one of Canada's foremost Art critics was born in Kingston. He was a veteran of both world wars and a member of the Kitchener Branch Legion of the Canadian.

With the artist; the late Ralph Connor; Ross Hamilton founded the K-W Art Society. He married Bessie Haist of St. Jacobs and Kitchener. He was very familiar with the Watson Gallery as he had been commissioned, after Mr. Watson's death, to sell the remaining Watson
landscapes. Before moving to the Watson home they lived in the Rockway section of Kitchener. This home had been purchased by Homer Watson in 1894 and was part of the Adam Ferrie land. The studio was added to the house in 1894, with large windows to give him correct lighting for his painting. In 1903 he added the Art Gallery. He removed a small white brick house to make room for the Gallery . The last inhabitants of this house was a family by the name of Bannister. The Gallery was built of New Hamburg brick purchased from his cousin Heman Cole; price two oil paintings.

    Historic Building:
This handsome one and a half storey residence, with hipped rood, was built in 1890 by Herman Cole, co-owner of the former Watson Woollen Mill. Though not a large building, it displays a wealth of well-executed classical features. These include a porch with pedimented roof supported by grouped Doric columns and roof detail of denticulated frieze. The eaves brackets of the house roof and the sementally arched windows are Italianate features. Set in an attractive garden, with many mature trees and shrubs, this is a building of great charm and presence.1a

    Notes:

    The Late John Ernst

John Ernst, Sr., who died at New Hamburg on the 1st inst., was born at Grand Village, near Belford, Lorraine, France, on the 4th of Dec., 1807. He emigrated to America in the year 1827, landing in New York in the same year, where he remained but one year, long enough to enable him to learn the English language somewhat. He came to Wilmot township in 1838 where he took up land, cleared his lot, and remained on the same for a long time. During his time there the cholera (1837) broke out, and while the sad epidemic lasted he helped to bury many of his neighbours, even making coffins from rough lumber and taking them to the burying ground with his ox team, and attending to the burial all by himself. After that he removed to Petersburg, where he engaged in the general store business and hotel keeping. Some time after that he owned and run the New Dundee mills, also the tannery at Petersburg. He was a man of good judgement, and a man on whose word you could rely. Any appointment he made he was sure to fulfill; he was a man of temperate habits although a hotel keeper for over 40 years. Some years ago he withdrew from actual business pursuits, but was always ready to enter into conversation on the topics of the day, as well as render any assistance where needed if at all in his power to do so. About six weeks ago he was attacked with bronchitis, then heart trouble set in from which he never rallied. Although far advanced in years he bore his sufferings with Christian fortitude and was prepared to meet his Maker. In years gone by he held different municipal offices, was Justice of the Peace and also issuer of marriage licences. He was postmaster at Petersburg for 44 years, and was one of the first postmasters in the County of Waterloo. In politics he was a staunch Conservative, and was ever ready to do a good turn for his party. He belonged to the Masonic fraternity and was an old member of that body. His remains were taken to Petersburg, for internment on Wednesday Feb. 3rd. He leaves one daughter and three sons to mourn his loss; his wife preceded him some fifteen years ago.
