Mrs. M. Seyffert Dies at Preston In 104th Year

In her 104th year, Mrs. Margaretha Seyffert, of Preston, passed away quietly in her sleep on Sunday. Mrs. Seyffert retired early Saturday evening and passed away about 4.30 in the morning. Mrs. Seyffert was born in Hessen in Germany in the year 1831, on August 17th. Her parents, who were Maria and Adam John Hess emigrated to Canada when she was five years of age. The party landed at New York and journeyed to Albany, N.Y. and later to Rochester, thence to Charlotte, across the waters of Lake Ontario to Hamilton in Canada. The trip through the bush was fraught with dangers in those days and the party finally arrived in safety at the home of Valentine Ratz, a cousin of the deceased. After spending about two months in that place they went on to Kingbush and later still to Bergeyville. From Bergeyville they journeyed to New Hope, now Hespeler where they first settled. As a child Mrs. Seyffert attended the Bergeyville school which stood opposite the home of C. T. Groh. Mrs. Seyffert was the last living attendant at that historical Institution of learning. Mrs. Seyffert had the honor of being the oldest living attendant at the Lutheran Church in Preston which celebrated its centenary this year. Her marriage to Mr. Frederick Seyffert took place in the Lutheran Church in Waterloo, Rev. Wunderlich performed the ceremony. Mr. Seyffert was born in Ochenburg, Wurtemberg, Germany. He died at the age of 78. The marriage took place in the year 1852. There are numbered among the survivors, five daughters and two sons. They are: Rose and Margaretha who have remained at home with their mother during her declining years: Mrs. Frederick Lippert of Walkerton; Mrs. Samuel Branch of Buffalo, N.Y., Mrs. James Soutar of Preston, William of Kitchener and Frederick of Detroit. One daughter, Amelia, predeceased her besides her husband. The funeral. which was widely attended, was held from the home on Tuesday, followed by the usual church services at St. Peter's Lutheran Church.

In 1841, Frederick Guggisburg started making chairs in Preston. Later he expanded his line to include pieces of furniture which were made largely by hand of such exquisite design and splendid workmanship that he found his limited space inadequate to cope with the demand from people who could afford to pay his price and wanted pieces of really fine furniture for their homes.

Some of this old Guggisburg furniture is still to be encountered here and there in homes where its present owners continue to admire the lovely lines and count it priceless. It is not for sale.

On December 11th, 1849, Jacob Hespeler invoiced Mr. Guggisburg in Preston with 11,281 feet of maple two by fours (sawn here) at $13.00 per M feet. This was probably used in making furniture. Prior to 1846 there was a carpenter here named Adam Hess who owned a house property on the north side of Queen Street east of Harvey. He had previously purchased the property from Michael Bergey and through it ran a small creek which carried water from several springs on the side hill down to the river.

In 1863, Hess sold his property to Fred. Guggisburg and in 1864 was tenant of the house on it. In 1866, Fred. Guggisburg is rated as owner of two acres on the north side of Queen Street, evidently the Hess lot, and other property between it and the river. In this year, George Guenther appears as Tenant of the Hess house. In 1871, Mr. Guenther bought one-fifth of an acre from Guggisburg, probably the house where he was living as tenant. The year following, that is, 1872, Guggisburg goes out of our picture and Mr. Guenther is shown as owner.

Previously, on March 5th, 1861, Guenther purchased from Joseph Oberholtzer seventy-four and three-quarters perches of land, part of lot ten, in the second concession, that is west of Harvey Street.
