    Notes:

Mary Hannah, known as Hattie, moved with her husband and family from Ontario, to Manitoba in 1905. They moved to a farm in the Deloraine district. They purchased 31-1-24 in 1905, but continued to live in the Deloraine district while they broke the sod and built a house (1908) and barn and outbuildings(1911). There was no good well on the home quarter, but Wallaces were able to buy the quarter across the road, which had an exceptional well, which provided water to many around, including the town of Waskada. Hattie helped establish the Red Cross, the Patriotic Societies and the United Grain Growers. The focal point of their lives was the Presbyterian and later United Church. Hattie started the Addington Sunday School. She worked hard as a sufferagette in 1915,helping to earn women the vote. Something her daughter Mary was very proud of.

    House:
39 Doon Valley Drive is associated with three prominent citizens of Waterloo County. The first owner, the Honourable Adam Ferrie, was the founder of Doon Village. Samuel Snider, who purchased the property from Ferrie, owned the Blair Mill, as well as other mills that he and a partner operated in Bridgeport and Baden. Thomas Slee, one of the first trustees of the area, and the Doon Postmaster from 1867 to 1893, was the last significant owner of the property, purchasing it from Snider in 1878. In addition to its association with persons of historic significance, Doon Valley Drive (formerly Doon Village Road), was once an important linkage between the Village of Doon to Tow Town and Oregon (today Upper Doon).
39 Doon Valley Drive is unique in its use of building materials and the methods of construction. This one-and-a-half-storey house combined granite, limestone, fieldstone and lime mortar in its construction. It retains many original, intact features, such as the stone chimney with cove moulding, and the single door with a transom, on the north façade.1a

    Notes:

    Death of Hugh Wallace, Esq.

To the long roll of departed heroes of this section we add today the name of Hugh Wallace, of Elloralie, North Dumfries, who entered on his well-earned rest on Friday evening last, aged 84 years.

When words are written at the close of a life like this they can but feebly express the scenes and vicissitudes through which it passed. The deceased was a native of Ayrshire, Scotland, and from almost childhood was thrown upon his own resources, being at a very early age apprenticed to the blacksmithing trade. Mastering the details of that business, and at the same time acquiring a very fair education by personal effort - for the making of a living left little time for any schooling - as a young man Mr. Wallace found himself a journeyman blacksmith, working at his trade until he married. The desire to improve his fortunes made him eagerly cast his eyes toward the available lands which afforded scope for the emigrant. In 1832 the die was cast, and in that year he landed on American shores, only there to be greeted with the terrible misfortune of losing his young wife by cholera, which was then raging. For two years thereafter he resided with his child, who is now Mrs. Andrew Landreth, in New York State; but the Township of North Dumfries was in the market, and with its adjacent Townships of Waterloo and Wilmot was attracting a good deal of attention. Turning westward, Mr. Wallace decided upon first visiting this section, and in these days of railways it is difficult of credence that at that time he made the whole distance by driving. On arriving here, he soon selected the land out of which he hewed the valuable homestead where for so many years of his later life he enjoyed more than the usual comforts of a green old age. While clearing and bringing under cultivation the land he had purchased, Mr. Wallace never gave up the trade he had learned at home, and soon got up a little shop wherein, when business called or when outdoor pursuit could not be followed, the busy clang of the hammer, wielded by an arm now powerless, could be heard. During this interval he married the lady who still survives him, a sister of the late Mr. Robert Gillespie, by whom he had seven children, viz.: - Mr. John Wallace, of Waterloo; Mr. James Wallace, of North Dumfries, living near the homestead; Mr. William Wallace, residing on the homestead; Mrs. Wiffler and Miss Wallace, residing with him at the time of his death; and Mrs. John Meikle and Mrs. Peter Hay, of Galt, all of whom worthily reflect in their lives the example set them in integrity, industry and Christian rectitude.

To think of "Dickie Settlement" and this old familiar face gone, is sad to many in this section. So closely identified with its history, every foot of progress bearing testimony to his industry, frugality and intelligence; the kindest of neighbors and most forgiving of opponents; strict in the higher duties and observances of the Presbyterian body to which he belonged and cordial in its support and progress, a life like this at its close conveys its own lesson of good while it leaves behind a blank.

    _____________

    Passed Away

After many months of gradual decay, Mrs. Hugh Wallace, of "Dickie Settlement," widow of the late Hugh Wallace, died on Friday night last in her 77th year. The history of this family is so well known in this section that but few words are necessary now. Mrs. Wallace was a native of Ayrshire, Scotland, and came to York State in 1832, in company with her brother, the late John Gillespie. There she was married to her late husband and in 1834, Mr. and Mrs. Wallace and Mr. Gillespie came to this Township, the lands selected being those upon which the rest of their days were spent, their married life extending over a period of fifty years. Of their family there are left Mr. John Wallace, of Waterloo; Mr. James Wallace, residing on his farm close to the Homestead; Mr. Wm. Wallace, residing on the Homestead, as do also two daughters, Mrs. Wifller and Miss Wallace; Mrs. John Meidle, residing with her husband and family on a contiguous farm; and Mrs. Peter Hay, of Galt.

Mrs. Wallace's funeral took place on Monday afternoon, the assemblage of relatives and friends being very large.

He was married in early life to Miss Robinson, of Renwick, who now mourns the loss of her aged partner. In 1852, he emigrated to Canada in company with his daughter and her husband. After residing in Wellesley township for a year he moved to Benton, Wisconsin, where he remained until 1864; when his health again compelled him to return to Canada, when he settled in Doon, where he remained until his death. For forty years Mr. Vipond had been a sufferer from asthma, a disease that caused other diseases, which terminated fatally on Saturday last.
