MR. CHARLES FREDERICK BROWN IS DEAD

Prominant Berlin Manufacturer Causes much Regret

MR. C.F. BROWN, senior partner of the large and influential manufacturing and mercantile firm of Brown & Erb died at his residence on David street on Sunday afternoon at 5 p. after an illness of a month or two, arising out of a small carbuncle on his left cheek. About election time he was able to attend a public meeting. but shortly after blood poisoning set in and be suffered great pain. He grew gradually worse, despite the efforts of his physicians. A week ago Sunday be was reported dead, but on Monday he rallied and on Wednesday it was thought that he would survive, so bright and cheerful did he become, On Saturday afternoon however he grow delirious owing to the severity of the pain he was suffering and a partial failure of the heart's function, On Sunday afternoon he breathed his last, surrounded
    by his wife and family.

Charles Frederick Brown was born in the village of Bridgeport on Feb, 15th, 1845, nearly 51 years ago. Some 35 years ago he came to Berlin to learn the trade of cabinet-making at what then Simpson & Aldous' furniture factory, After completing his apprenticeship he went to New York and spent some four years in that metropolis. He then returned and began business for himself as a cabinet-maker in a small shop next the Simpson Company's late office, In a year or two he moved across the street to a small red brick cottage, known as Paul Schmidt's house which stood on the part of the site where the firm's manufactory now stands. Mr. Jos, Devitt, since deceased, was an early partner whh Mr. Brown and continued with him until his death about 1880. Mr. Erb then became a member of the firm and has continued as such ever since.

Mr Brown wasa a man of indomitable will power, had plenty of backbone, while the power of acquisition was a strong characteristic By his energy and the assistance of his partner gradually built up a very large business, as manufacturers of furniture, gloves, mitts and leather, and jobbers in furniture, moccasins, felt socks & c. The firm's trade amounted to hundreds of thousands of dollars annually and their field was as wide as the Dominion.

Mr Brown during his life was various times a member of the town council, where he exhibited the same independent and fearlessness
that characterised him in business After the adoption of the Park Act, a little better than a year ago, and the appointment of a Board of Park Management, he was appointed a member of it and subsequently chosen Chairman of the Board, which position he held until his death. His labors in behalf of "Victoria" park and its lake are too familiar to require his efforts in mention, suffice to say his efforts in
behalf of a public breathing spot will not soon be forgotten.

A loving wife and four sons and one daughter are left to mourn his comparatively early death, and the sincere condolences of many friends will be offered then in their hour of bereavement.

Mr.Brown's remains may be viewed on and after 4 p. m. Tuesday and will be interred on Wednesday Feb, 5th. at 2 p.m., the funeral leaving his late residence for Mount Hope Cemetery at that hour Rev. R. Atkinson will officiate.

His death will be a great loss to his firm as well as his family. According to his will, it is supposed that the business will be carried on as at present for two years, when the heirs and executors and Mr. Erb may, or may not, dispose of it.

The news of his death has called forth many expressions of regret from his fellow business men and friends.
