    DIAMOND WEDDING

It is not many who have the privilege of enjoying sixty years of married life, but last Thursday, Sept. 8th, Mr. and Mrs. George Scheifele celebrated this exceptional feature in life's journey. Their family being much separated did not find it possible to be together for the occasion. But a number of their church friends kindly remembered the event and came provided to have a few hours social time in the evening. Before dispersing Rev. Mr. Hehn led in family worship and one of the pleasant circumstances as that Mrs. Scheifele was able to lead in the singing of a hymn which was part of the wedding service sixty years go. Congratulatory addresses were given by a number of those present and all departed wishing the aged couple much comfort of mind and body in their declining years.

Mr. Scheifele is now in his 83rd year and Mrs. Scheifele in her 80th year. The former came from Germany when about 2 years old and the latter, Miss Philipena Grosz, when 17 years old. They were married in Conestogo by the Rev. Frederick Bindeman, and settled in St. Jacobs, where Mr. Scheifele followed the trade of shoemaker. He had only $5 with which to go to Galt to get a supply of leather &c. for his business, but he says the dealer there made the remark that he looked like a Dutchman and an honest man and he would trust him for $60. They remained in St. Jacobs some 7 years when they removed to Floradale where they spent some 31 years on a farm, and returned to St. Jacobs 22 years ago.
Their family consisted of 3 sons and 6 daughters, six of whom are living. The daughters are Mrs. Gregor, of Clifford; Mrs. John Sattler, of Berlin; and Mrs. Jacob Sattler, of Heidelberg. The sons are Tobias, of Winnipeg; Noah, of Minnesota; and Matthew, of Iowa. There being no boys present your correspondent wasn't in it.

An Old St. Jacobs Citizen Passes

On Monday, Mr. Geo. Scheifele, one of St. Jacobs oldest residents, passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Jacob Sattler, Heidelberg, where he had been residing since the death of his wife last April. The deceased had been suffering for a long time from kidney trouble, and last Thursday it was decided that he should be operated on. As he thought this would bring relief to his suffering. The operation proved too much, owing to his weak condition and advanced age. The deceased came to this village about 60 years ago, engaging in the shoemaking business for some time, when he moved onto a farm near Floradale. About twenty years ago he moved back here, where he resided until the death of his wife about five months ago. During his life he was a good and faithful member of the Evangelical Church, always, when able, attended prayer meeting and Sunday school, and was well known and respected by a large number of people in this district. He was over 85 years of age. Three sons and three daughters are left to mourn the loss of a kind father, namely, Mattias and Noah, of Minnesota, Charles Tobias, of Winnipeg, Mrs. Catherine Kreutzer, Clifford, Mrs. Barbara Sattler, Berlin, and Mrs. Mary Sattler, Heidelberg. The funeral which took place on Wednesday afternoon, to the Evangelical Church, St. Jacobs, thence to cemetery, was largely attended.

WEBER - A sad and fatal accident occurred on the 9th of January, resulting in the death of our dear brother, Isaac Weber, of Berlin, Ontario. On the above date, about noon, he started for his home a short distance south-east of Berlin, in company with Bro. Samuel Cressman, and when near the intersection of King and Cedar Strs, the king-bolt of his vehicle dropped out, throwing both men violently to the frozen ground, stunning them. The latter soon recovered, but Bro. Weber was carried to a house near by, he however recovered so far that he could be taken home. Medical aid had been promptly summoned, and his injuries were not considered fatal, but on Sunday following he was taken with an epileptic stroke, rendering him speechless, and from that time he began to sink until Tuesday the 12th when he passed away. He leaves a sorrowing companion, three adopted children (one married), an aged mother, one brother and one sister, besides many near and dear friends who deeply mourn their loss. Bro. Weber was a consistent member of the Mennonite church since his youth, and one of the pioneer Sunday school workers in our church. He always took a lively interest in everything pertaining to the prosperity of the Master's cause. His remains were conveyed to their last earthly resting place at C. Eby's M.H., on the 14th. Funeral services by David Hostetler, of Ohio, in German, and by David Garber, of Ohio, in English, to a house filled to its utmost capacity with sympathizing hearers. Text Isa. 3: 10, 11. Bro. Weber had reached the age of 56 years and 8 months. J.Z.K.
