    An Excuse.

As I see my name enrolled in the Conviction List for the charge of assault and battery I will endeavor to lay before the Public the nature of the charge, and let the People judge for themselves. We have a set of unruly Children in this place; fighting, playing ball, hollering and screaming, running up and down the Streets was carried on at such a rate that a person could hardly go the streets peaceable. I would frequently talk to them and also tell their parents it seemed to have no effect whatever. What shall we do, shall we go to law in such a case, I am sure we have plenty of that in Berlin; no, I took the liberty to give them a good whipping, and the reason I done so, was, because my own was with the lot - Now if this is just and that a man shall be charged for assault and battery, in such a case I will say no more; but I shall always say, and maintain, that I had done right, if we go to law with our Children in such a case. It is very easy to judge what the consequence will be, but we have so much law in this place that they will send a crazy man to Jail for taking up an Ax, yes and cuff his ears besides.
