    A. Schreiter Dies Suddenly Victim of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning: Nearly Got Out of Garage

    Halifax Work Recalled

Prominent In Kitchener's Business and Fraternal Life: Funeral on Tuesday

Armand Alvin Schreiter, one of Kitchener's best known young business men died late last night or early this morning from carbon monoxide poisoning in his garage at 87 Queen St. N. Death overcame Mr. Schreiter as he was apparently endeavoring to leave the gas filled garage and had he fallen towards the partly opened garage door instead of away from it the fatality might have been avoided. Early in the evening Mr. Schreiter had driven his wife to a friend's home for a women's bridge party. He then turned home and about ten o'clock put the children to bed. It is believed that he entered the garage between 11: 30 and 11: 45 as he intended to call for his wife. Of late his car had been giving some trouble in starting and on two occasions a garage mechanic had had to be called to start it. It is believed that Mr. Schreiter thinking that he might have trouble starting the auto, left the door partly open and intended warming up the engine as he had often done before, prior to opening the doors wide owing to the cold evening and the fumes unexpectedly over came him. He had made his way from the seat of the car to the rear and in falling apparently struck the car, a gash being inflicted on the nose. The discovery was made shortly before three o'clock this morning. On returning home Mrs. Schreiter thought that her husband had been called out on business and she went to bed. On awakening and noting her husband's continued absence she went downstairs and heard the drone of a motor car engine. She immediately went to the garage and made the gruesome discovery.

    Born in this city

The late Mr. Schreiter was born in Kitchener 41 years ago on July 12, 1891. He was educated in the Kitchener public and high schools and then entered the banking business with the Bank of Nova Scotia here. Subsequently he gravitated to the furniture and undertaking business of his father with which he was connected for many years. Of late years he has been principally with the De Luxe Upholstering Co. In 1920 Mr. Schreiter married Margaret Erb, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ephraim Erb, who survives together with one son, Stanley 11, and three daughters, Hazel 9, Susan 7 and Peggy 5. Mr. Schreiter's parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. G. Schreiter, one brother Herbert of this city and one sister Adele, Mrs. Walton. The late Mr. Schreiter was prominently identified in fraternal circles being a member of Grand River Lodge, the Kitchener chapter R. A. M. Valletta Preceptory and Mocha Temple, London. He was a 14th degree Scottish Shriner.

    Splendid Halifax work

When the Halifax explosion disaster of 1917 shocked this country and the world, Mr. Schreiter dropped his business here and rushed at once to the stricken city here he volunteered his services as embalmer and mortician. He assumed charge of the tragic details of embalming and burying those who met their death in the explosion. Mr. Schrieter was in the stricken community for more than a week before his work of mercy was completed and when he left he carried with him the lasting gratitude of all who passed through the shadow out of the great calamity. "Purely accidental," was the opinion of Coroner Dr. Hett who at first did not intend to have an inquest but in order to conform with legal insurance requirements later announced that an inquest would be held, the date being as yet unnamed. The funeral will be held Tuesday afternoon at three o'clock at the Schreiter Funeral Home.

It was an unforgettable experience she remembered vividly for the rest of her long life. It also set her apart as the remarkable woman whose courage, optimism and generosity became legendary to all who knew her.

Margaret Camilla Erb was born in Elmira, Ontario on July 30, 1895. Her mother, Emily Lilian Lee, had immigrated from London, England with three sisters and a brother. Her father, Ephraim Bricker Erb, was the son of Menno and grandson of Moses Erb, one of the first ministers at the First Mennonite Church.

In 1899, Margaret's father Ephraim Erb, who had operated a general store in Elmira, moved his family to Berlin, Ontario where he began work as a traveller, selling gloves for his father, Menno. Menno Erb had a glove manufacturing business at the Erb Tannery, as well as a retail operation selling mattresses and furniture. Margaret recalled occasional visits in her early years to the Erb tannery "immense and smelly but filled with many nice people."

    Notes:

The Firm of Schreiter, Berlin's Largest Retail Furniture House.

No review of the growth of Berlin would be complete without a notice upon Schreiters, Berlin's greatest furniture establishment. Schreiter's is wothy of notice in many ways. For thirteen years it has been on King St. Starting in a small way at 52 King St., it now occupies its own building at 63 and five floors covering fifteen thousand feet are filled with medium and high class furniture, and the upholstering department alone occupies one whole floor and is justly noted for its fine work.

Schreiter's is noticeable for yet another fact. It is owned still by its founder, Mr. A. G. Schreiter, who in 1873 started in the furniture career in Boutzin, Germany\emdash always leaning to the higher class furniture and decorative effects. To-day he is ably assisted by Mr. Herbert C. Schreiter and owing to the continuous growth of the business has just been joined by Mr Armand A. Schreiter.

For fourteen years Mr. A. G. Schreiter was foreman for the Simpson factory; he then started out for himself and the best evidence of his success is the present store\emdash the largest in size and stock and carrying by far the largest variety of furniture of any furniture store in Waterloo County.

Thirty-nine years in the furniture business is out of the ordinary, but then Schreiter's, which is known as the " House of Quality," is personally supervised by an out of the ordinary mind.
Asked to what he attributed his success, Mr. A. G. Schreiter remarked: "The carrying out of my early training of thoroughness. What's worth doing at all, is worth not only doing well, but doing a little better than is expected."

That probably explains the success of his upholstering department. This branch of the business employs only the highest paid men and no piece work is allowed, everything is by the salary system. "Good work is slow work," said Mr. Schreiter, "but it pays in the end, for good upholstering tells its tale as the years go by."

When one hears Mr. Schreiter enlarge upon Period Styles in furniture; hears him talk upon complementary wall treatments; the arrangement of wall and window spaces in dining-rooms to accommodate sideboards, buffets, chairs of style desired; you at once know you are in touch with a man who believes in and practices intrinsic goodness in furniture and makes it the keynote of his business.

In these days when too often cheapness runs riot to the regret ultimately of the buyer, it is refreshing to hear Quality set first and linked with a fair profit.

As Mr. A. G. Schreiter tersely put it\emdash every piece of furniture upon our fifteen thousand feet of floor space is guaranteed to be the best in style, material, workmanship and FINISH in its class; our goods run from the medium good, which will cost less than "cheap" furniture else-where, up to the finest suites and individual pieces known.

Here and there on the floors can be seen dainty pieces upholstered by Schreiters after the various Periods. Here a Chippendale, there a Sheraton, over there a Colonial, opposite it and in direct contrast a piece in Art Nouveau. Just beyond is a Suite for the Dining-room in Mission, flat, quaint, unadorned, plain and of solid construction. It is pleasing because of its oddity. and satisfactory proportions, suggesting repose, comfort and suitability for modest homes. Schreiter's is a striking example of the success which comes from selling dependable good goods.

Yet another point worthy of comment in regard to Schreiter's is that it is a permanent business for Berlin. They own their five-storey building, all their capital is in and working for Berlin; for nearly twenty years Mr. A. G. Schreiter has been in the furniture business here and now his two sons are also in the business to assist in its rapid growth and to perpetuate the success of the founder.

As Mr. A. G. Schreiter also put it, "Schreiter's is a Berlin Institution, here to stay, all our eggs are in one basket and we are satisfied to grow with Berlin and to urge on the city which by its patronage has built up this the largest furniture business in Waterloo County." Good sentiments. We need such men, we need such firms.

(Just as this section of the book is printed Schreiter's have bought the Simpson Building and stock; doubling their store capacity.)

    King Street , North Side

    Pandora Street

Pandora Street and next to it the site of Bishop Benjamin Eby's buildings and farm. A fine lawn surrounded a large frame house with spacious veranda between the house and King Street. There was a large barn and east of it a cider mill operated by Ely Eby, son of the Bishop. In later years the place was occupied by Rev. Moses Erb and his son Menno Erb, the cider mill long continuing. There was a large orchard between the farm buildings and the Mennonite Meeting House and cemetery. The Mennonites had at first no shed adjoining their church. Posts joined by a chain led along the King Street front, for tying horses. The sheds came later. In 1834 a frame building was erected for this Church. It was moved to Cedar Street in 1902 when the present brick Church was erected and is still used as a woodenware factory.

Eby school house was located at the easterly corner of the cemetery. A frame building, painted red, before 1830. In the rear and to the east of the cemetery was William Moyer's farm with his brick house still standing at the top of the slope from King Street.
