    Before the turn of the century, John and Jacob Cassel born in 1871, twin sons of Mr. and Mrs. Adam B. Cassel of Blenheim township, Oxford County, gained considerable fame as tightrope and trapeze artists, and balloonists. They ascended to approximately 500 feet landing by parachute and gave many performances throughout Waterloo County.

    The accomplished athletic brothers spent some time travelling with circuses in the USA and Jacob worked with a medicine show as a magician and sharpshooter.

    John, the only one of the pair to marry, later lived in South Carolina. In his early forties he was injured in a fall which resulted in his death in 1910. Jacob was also hurt in a fall, from which he only partially recovered, passing away from of a heart attack at his mother's home.

    Died At Louisville, Kentucky, U. S. A. on April 14th, 1909, at 12.15 o'clock, p. m, Jacob Cassel, aged 37 years, 7 months, 11 days.

    The Funeral Will take place on Tuesday afternoon, 20th inst. at 2 o'clock, from his mother's residence, New Dundee, Ont., to the U. B. Church for services, thence to the Blenheim Cemetery for interment. Friends and acquaintances will please accept this intimation.

In the year 1849 Mr. and Mrs. Cassel, with their family, moved to Canada and settled with their son, Abraham at Blair, Ontario, where they resided until their son, Jesse, purchased his farm near New Dundee, then they made their home with him until Mr. Cassel's death which took place September 9th, 1866.     It is thought she is the daughter of John Biehn and Nancy Bechtel although The Biographical History of Waterloo Township indicates she was the daughter of John's father and his wife Barbara Fried. More research is needed to confirm.

    Jacob R. Detweiler," was born in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, December 15th, 1807. He was married to Anna, daughter of Isaac and Anna (High) Wismer. She was born in Lincoln County, Ontario, in 1808. They resided at Roseville, Ontario, on the farm now possessed by their son Enoch. Here they resided until their deaths. He died July 2nd, 1885, and her death took place November 5th, 1871. To them was born a family of eleven children, of whom the eldest seven, namely VI Isaac, VI Daniel, VI Benjamin, VI John, VI Jacob, VI Barbara, and VI Susannah died in infancy.     Death of an Old Resident of Dumfries

    There passed away, on Thursday of last week, after a short illness, Mr. Jacob R. Detweiler, aged 78 years. The deceased came to this country with his parents from Pennsylvania, when 16 years of age. He resided for a short time at Preston, when the family removed to the homestead near Roseville, at present occupied by Mr. Aaron Detweiler, his nephew. He afterwards purchased 50 acres alongside of his father's farm, where he continued to reside till the time of his death. The deceased was a shoemaker by trade, and for some years carried on that business as well as farming. He was highly respected by the residents of the township, and the funeral on Saturday last was largely attended.

    Notes:

    Jacob Detweiler," second son of Jacob and Mary (Funk) Detweiler, was a native of Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, where he was born November 25th, 1778. On December 15th, 1803, he was married to Susannah Rosenberger who was born in the same county as Mr. Detweiler, January 15th, 1781. When a young man he was called to the ministry of the Mennonite body, but when the Funkite question was brought up he would not give his decision in favor of either party. However, after his coming to Canada he was an active worker in behalf of the Mennonite church until his death. In 1822 they, with others, moved to Canada and settled in North Dumfries Township, Waterloo County, a little west of Roseville, on the farm now possessed by their grand-son, Aaron B. Detweiler. Here they resided until their deaths. She died September 9th, 1847, and he died August 8th, 1858. To them was born a family of ten children"

    I, Jacob Detweiller Senior of the Township of North Dumfries…First I Will and ordain that my funeral expenses and all my just debts shall be paid as soon as possible on convenient after my decease. I Will and ordain that all the residue of my estate shall be divided into nine equal shares or portions and that my sons and daughters shall have each a share, and that the children of my deceased daughters Elizabeth and Nancy have one share each which has to be distributed equally amongst them, but the shares of those who are under age to remain in the hands of the Executors on interest to be delivered over to them when they arrive at the years of majority. And also that my daughter Susanna's portion of legacy be kept in the hands of the Executors when they think that she or her heirs will most need it. And that my two sons Enoch and Benjamin shall have their portions after all the rest of my family have had their portions or legacies. Lastly I do hereby constitute and appoint my two sons in law, Samuel Snyder and Benjamin Snyder Executors of this my Last Will and Testament.
