Notes:
Fatal Accident
Mr. Sebastian Englert, engineer in Erb's tannery here, was busy on Tuesday throwing hides into a large wash-tub resting on two vertical supports, which was turning around by means of steampower, and which had an opening on the side. One hide became stuck in the opening and, in an attempt to push it in, Mr. Englert's arm got into the approximately 3-inch space between the washtub and the support-post. Nearby observers soon brought the drum to a stand-still and released the pinched arm, but in the meantime, it had been terribly mangled. The outer bone of the lower arm had been torn off at the elbow and hung right out. The arm was a terrifying sight. Dr. Lackner was called over and, after applying a temporary bandage, transported the patient to the hospital, where, with the help of Drs. Hett and Cline, the arm was amputated close to the shoulder. Although the operation was successful, and the patient was very brave (he had climbed into Dr. Lackner's automobile by himself after the accident, to drive to the hospital), the uncommonly large bloodloss and severe pain had weakened him so much, that he gave up the ghost on Tuesday evening.
The deceased had come to Canada about 18 years ago from Würzburg, Bavaria and lived for eight years near Dashwood, Huron County. He then came to Berlin, where he delighted in being a loyal father and good citizen, generally respected. The accident is a bitter blow for his family, whom he had left quite cheerfully on Tuesday morning, never to return again and to the survivors goes, generally, the deepest sympathy. The family consists of six sons and three daughters. The children are all at home except for the oldest son who is employed as a cigar-maker in Port Huron, Michigan.
The burial takes place today, Thursday, at 10 o'clock; taking part are the St. Boniface Association and the Maccabeans. The funeral service will take place in the Catholic church and burial will be in the Catholic cemetery.
