    Passing of J.K. Rutherford

Was Assessor of North Dumfries for Many Years

By the death on Tuesday of Mr. John K. Rutherford, the Township of North Dumfries loses one of its oldest, best-known and most highly esteemed residents, as well as one of the most painstaking and efficient public officials the municipality has ever had. During his long, continuous term as assessor, the deceased had frequently visited every home in the township and was personally known to everybody within the confines of North Dumfries, all of whom will regard his demise as very closely allied to a personal affliction. His long and faithful association with the Presbyterian Church in Ayr, both as a member and an office holder, especially as a prominent member of the Session for many years, also added luster to his usefulness and gave him a still water sphere in which to exercise his excellent qualities of head and heart. Mr. Rutherford, who was in his 74th year, was born on the farm on which he died. He had been in ? health for some time and when ? numerous care ? the bed with the ? MRS. J. K. RUTHERFORD.

While apparently in excellent health, and pursuing her home duties, death removed with no warning the loved presence of Mrs. J. K. Rutherford from her home near Ayr. Deceased had retired to her home for a a moment in the midst of a busy Saturday morning, and when her daughter a few minutes later entered the room it was to witness the last moments of her mother's life,as she peacefully passed away. The news of the sudden death has been received with deep regret throughout the vicinity, where she was so well known. A large circle of friends and her more immediate friendship and relationship feel the removal of deeply a bright sunny disposition and cherry hopeful nature."

Mrs. Rutherford was born in Terra Cotta, and after her marriage Mr. Rutherford in 1870 came with to the vicinity of Ayr, where she has since resided. She was in her 63rd year when death overtook her. Her health was never of the most robust since coming to Canada and in February last a diseased lower limb was removed, and a wheel chair provided for the patient. In this Mrs. Rutherford was able to perform her household duties with remarkable ability, and her health was apparently better than it had been for years. Sudden death, following in the wake of evident good health and happiness made the bereavement doubly sad, and Mr. Rutherford and his family have the sympathy of the entire community in their sorrow.

Besides the husband, two and two daughters, all grown sons up. survive. They are R. Henderson, William Cornell, Rubina (Mrs. Colvin) and Florence.

    Notes:

DEATH OF MR. WALTER BRAIDWOOD - this very old resident of Galt passed away at the residence of his son-in-law, Mr. John Rutherford, in Waterloo, on Monday morning last, almost suddenly. He had been in his usual health up to Sabbath, but that day did not appear to be quite well, although up and taking his meals. Monday morning, Mr. Rutherford went to his room and lit his fire and he then said he did not feel quite well and would go back to bed. In a short time Mrs. Rutherford took him up some breakfast, of which he had taken scarcely a mouthful before he complained of severe pain in the region of his heart and lying back in his bed almost instantly breathed his last, heart disease or failure of the heart being the supposed cause of death.

Mr. Braidwood was in his 81st year. He came from Roxburghshire, Scotland, to this country in 1841. Of his early years after coming here we find but little record, but soon he entered into business as a butcher with Mr. Wm. Ramsay, on North Water Street. Carrying this on for some time, the firm dissolved and went out of business, and from that time, if we mistake not, Mr. Braidwood principally occupied himself with dealing in hides, accumulating considerable means. Old age and the loss of his aged wife caused his withdrawal from active life, and for some years he has taken his ease, latterly, for the sake of companionship, residing with Mr. and Mrs. Rutherford. Mr. Braidwood was an active, cheery man, widely known and very much respected. He leaves one son, Mr. Wm. Braidwood, of Pontiac, Michigan, and three daughters, viz.: Mrs. John Rutherford, of Waterloo, Mrs. John Kay, and Mrs. John wells, of St. Catherine's.

Mr. Braidwood's funeral took place on Wednesday last, from Mr. Rutherford's residence, Waterloo, to Mount View Cemetery, Galt, being largely attended by his old friends.

    Death of Mrs. Walter Braidwood

We have before mentioned the serious illness of this aged and long resident of Galt. During the last week or more it was evident that her death was to be expected and it was therefore no surprise to the many friends of the family to hear on Saturday morning that she had passed to her eternal rest. Her son, Mr. Wm. Braidwood, was over from Pontiac, Michigan, a few days before her death, and while the end was evidently not far off, it was not expected so soon as it occurred, consequently business engagements compelled his return on Friday. For her aged husband, in the bitter hour of his sorrow, there is only left the warm sympathy of his many old friends.
