The home of the 'Tribe' family was first in the township of Dumfries, then the mother and some of the family came to the township of Pilkington and lived in a log house which stood between the road and the river, not quite half way between what is best known as the 'James Ross' farm and Inverhaugh post office.

The members of this, the older Penfold family, children of Jesse Penfold and Jane Tribe, were : Matilda, born in Sussex, England, on the same day as Queen Victoria, May 24th, 1819, and came to Canada in 1832. Jesse Penfold, son of Jesse Penfold and Jane Tribe, was born in Sussex, England, on December 30th, 1823, and with his parents and his mother's parents, came to the township of Dumfries in 1832. He was there married, in 1842, to Hannah Wismer, who was born May 30th, 1825, and died in April, 1903.

In the year 1844, Jesse Penfold took up the farm on which he has lived for sixty-two years, and he was the first settler on the west side of the river, between West Montrose and Elora, which is a distance of eight miles.
