BROWN, JOHN PRICE was born in Manchester, England, in 1844 the son of Joshua and Sarah Brown, and accompanied his parents to Canada when he was eleven years of age.

He obtained his medical education at the University of Toronto, being the first medical student to be a double gold medallist. Following his graduation in 1868, he commenced practice in Hollen, Wellington County, but in February 1870 he opened an office in Galt.

In 1871 he married Agnes Graham, daughter of William Graham, of Galt. While in Galt he served as coroner. In 1883 he received the degree of Licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians, Edinburgh, in laryngology and rhinology. he decided to move to Toronto in 1888, at which time the Dumfries Reformer on October 18th of that year said of him: "Dr. Brown during his residence in Galt has identified himself with the interests of the town, and in his departure Galt loses a good citizen. " They also indicated that he had disposed of his practice to Dr. J. M. Cameron.

In Toronto he had an outstanding reputation as a nose and throat specialist. He was one of the founders of the Toronto Western Hospital, and was governor for many years.

He was blind for the last twenty years of his life, but devoted himself to writing, producing several historical novels under the nom de plume of Eric Bohn. He wrote the definitive story of that time of Laura Secord, under the title "Laura the Undaunted. "

He died on April 3, 1938, in Toronto, at the age of ninety four years.

Animalcules in Buttermilk.\emdash Dr. J. P. Brown, of Galt, Ontario, in the Canada Lancet for August, gives an account of a family poisoned by drinking buttermilk, which on examination with the microscope, was proved to contain immense numbers of animalcules. He thinks the germs which produced them were taken in by the cow in the water which she drank, and found their way into her blood through the lacteals. The symptoms were those of narcotico-irritant poisoning, viz.: vomiting, purging, cramps, stupor, etc. "We think it much more probable that the organisms were produced in the milk after it was taken from the cow.
