He himself was, from the time he became a member till near his death, treasurer of the congregation, and in that capacity he was painstaking and Central Presbyterian Church, Galt faithful. Elsewhere in this book we have put on record the resolution of the Managers expres sing their appreciation of his valuable services

This year Mr. Gavin Hume, who had long held an important official position in the church as its Treasurer, died, and the Managers, in their report, make this entry : " In the death of Mr. Gavin Hume your Managers have lost one of their oldest members, who served the congregation for many years as Treasurer, and took an active part in the affairs of the church

    BUSINESS MEN IN TROUBLE.

TORONTO. Aug. 13.- The failure of Gavin Hume, Miller & Co., dealers in hardware and groceries at Galt. is announced. Mr. Hume has been doing business in Galt for the last 25 years. and was generally supposed to be on a sound financial footing. His liabilities amount to something like $70,000, and his nominal surplus reaches only a few hundred dollars. The immediate cause of failure was the pressure brought to bear by a Glasgow firm who hold a mortgage against his mill and property. The Bank of Commerce is an extensive creditor, but is understood to be secured. The Merchants' Bank is also a creditor for a less amount. Several wholesale firms in this city are deeply interested. A meeting or the creditors was held on the 7th inst, but no arrangement was come to, and the meeting adjourned for two weeks.

He came to Galt in 1848 and soon found employment in the hardware business of Bob Gillespie. He later also worked with Peter Cook. In 1851 Mr. Hume purchased a grocery store on the west bank of the Grand River, formerly owned by Richard Irwin. In 1856 he built an adjoining hardware store and operated the two stores until 1893 when he sold the grocery store to McPherson and Shiel. He sold the hardware store to J. R. Clunis in 1894. Mr. Hume was also the proprietor for a number of years in the Dumfries Mills. He was a member of Galt's town council in 1858-1859, 1861-1866, serving a deputy reeve in 1864 and 1866.

    DEATH OF MR. HUME

Another Old Resident of Galt Crosses the Border

The death of Mr. Gavin Hume, another of the many old residents of Galt, who have been recently called away, took place at the family residence, Blenheim Road, at six o'clock, Tuesday evening. The deceased had been in poor health for the past couple of years. He sustained a severe fall a year ago last Christmas, breaking his wrist. During the past three months, Mr. Flume has suffered from a complication of diseases and of late had been very low. Although his demise was expected, still the tidings of his departure will come in the nature of a surprise to his many old friends, in Galt, who were not prepared to hear the worst. The deceased gentleman was in the77th year of his age and was born in Irving, Ayrshire, Scotland, in the year 1818. He came of a large family and was the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Alex. Hume. Four sisters, two of whom reside in Galt and two brothers, residing in the States. survive him. The Subject of this sketch, when about thirty years of age, came with his parents to Galt, where they took up their permanent residence. Deceased's father died about eighteen years ago and the mother passed away, a few years subsequently. The late Mr Hume first engaged as clerk in a grocery store. He, after working in this line for a few years, embarked in business for himself, occupying the store lately tenanted by McPherson Bros., grocers and the store adjoining, now that of J. R. Clunis. The latter addition Mr. Hume built. Deceased who was for nearly fifty years a respected and widely known resident of Galt, was known throughout Waterloo County as one of its oldest hardware merchants, he being in business in the same stand for over forty years, Mr. J. R. Clunis purchasing the stock a few months ago, failing health compelling Mr. Hume to retire. In religion he was a Presbyterian, being a member of the C. P. church, of which he was treasurer for a number of years, being succeeded some time ago by Mr. Alfred Taylor. In politics, the late Mr. Hume was a staunch Liberal and always took an active part in every political campaign, fearlessly upholding the principles of his party and supporting its candidate in many a hard, but well fought fight. For years he was a director of the Gore Mutual Fire Insurance Company. He was also in the town council for a number of years toward the end of the fifties and at the beginning of the sixties. Among the members of the council board in those days, was Mr. Thos. Fields, the present Division Court Clerk. Mr. Hume, it may be mentioned, first worked for the late Peter Cook, hardware dealer and on entering into business for himself, bought out H. H. Date, now of Montreal. He conducted both the hardware and grocery business for many years, only selling out the latter to Messrs.; McPherson & Shiel, a couple of years ago. The late Mr. Hume also ran the Dumfries Flour Mills for some years, succeeding Mr. Stewart, away back in the seventies. Deceased, as mentioned elsewhere, was treasurer for the C. P. church, a position he held for 23 years, occupying a similar position in the old Knox church and in the old Melville church. The deceased made many friends in his business and social relations and was the father, of a large family. He leaves a widow, two sons, Alexander and Guy, both of Galt, besides several daughters, all of whom will have the sympathy of a large circle of friends in their sad loss. The funeral will take place from the family residence this afternoon, at 4.30 o'clock, to Mount View cemetery. The obsequies will, no doubt, be largely attended.
