Louisa Ann Stauffer, daughter of John and Maria Myers, was born in Waterloo county, Ontario, and died near Caledonia, Michigan, November 2, 1909, aged 73 years, 8 months and II days. In the year 1857 she moved with her first husband to Illinois where she lived till the death of her husband in the Civil war, when she moved back to Canada where she resided a few years, and then came to Michigan and settled on the farm where she died, although she had not continuously lived there. Many years ago she became a member of the Caledonia United Brethren church but later was transferred to the Parmalee class, and remained a faithful member of that class until called to her reward. She had been married three times and was the mother of nine children, five of whom, four daughters and one son, survive her. Six years ago she was injured by being run over by a runaway team of horses and never fully recovered from the injury. She bore her sufferings with patience and died peacefully in the triumphs of a living faith. The funeral services were conducted in the Caledonia United Brethren church by Ex-Bishop H. T. Barnaby, assisted by the writer. … O. LASH.

When a young man he came to Canada and settled near Doon, Waterloo County, where he was married to Barbara (No. 5388), daughter of Benjamin and Elizabeth (Biehn) Rosenberger. She was born near Preston, Ontario, January 29th, 1804, and died January 30th, 1885. He died December 7th, 1857. To them were born eleven children"

Historic Building:
This large, two storey fieldstone farmhouse was built by Daniel Rudy in 1847. The builder carved his name and the date of construction on one half of a grindstone and embedded it in the second storey front wall to the right of the door. Like many early mennonite houses it is built in the plain Georgian style and faces south.
The house retains many of its early features. Some of the original small-paned twelve-over-eight windows remain. A number of other windows are six-over-six panes. It also has small attic windows as well as a bell in a cupola which was rung to call the men in from the fields. In the 1870's, a brick doddy house was added (for the parents when the son took over the farm), the porch, the two-over-two paned windowsand the board and batten summer kitchen may also have been added at this time. Colourful granite stones with large corner blocks give the house a pleasant patchwork-quilt appearance. Custom was to plaster the stone work under the front verandah.
All facades of this historical "rural" Waterloo home were recognized in the designation of the structure as a Heritage Landmark.<sup>1a

At his arrival here he was engaged by Mr. Jacob S. Shoemaker of Bridgeport where he put in his first work in Canada. He was married to Mary, daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth Wenger (maiden name Zimmerman). She was born April 28th, 1814, and died March 16th, 1868. They resided in the township of Woolwich, one mile east of Heidelberg where she died. After her death he was again married to a Mrs. Wenger and during the last years of his life he resided in the village of St. Jacobs where he died August 8th, 1883. THE WOOLWICH COUNCIL

A Woolwich Township Council was organized on January 21st, 1850. The councillors were: John Meyer, Edward Passmore, Peter Wenger, Peter Hay, and Wm. Veitch. They met "at Conestoga, in Kurtz's tavern." The members chose John Meyer as reeve and named James Dow as clerk and treasurer; Moses Springer as assessor on the east side of the Grand River and Christian Hurst on the west wide, each at 6 pounds ($24) a year; and Wm. Reynolds as collector, with a salary of five and a half per cent. of his collections. Charles Hendry was appointed auditor.

The council ordered a seal and studied a plan for building a bridge across the Conestoga River; appointed a road surveyor and considered the advisability of appointing a local superin-tendent of schools. For a number of years schools, bridges, roads, and the regulation of taverns were the chief items of business.

Waterloo County's provisional municipal council met in Berlin on May 3rd, 1852. Woolwich was represented by Reeve John Meyer and Deputy-Reeve Peter Wenger.

Winger (Spelled "Wenger" by some members of family), "The Wingers were among the early and respectable settlers of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. They came to America from Switzerland as early as 1748 and settled in Lancaster County. They were an enterprising, industrious, and honorable people. Their descendants are now to be found in almost every state of the United States and quite a number have settled in Canada. The old progenitor that came from Switzerland was "Hans" (John) Winger. His family consisted of seven sons who were all born in Switzerland. The Wingers in Waterloo County are descendants of this old "Hans". Some are the children of old Joseph Wenger, a great-grandson of old "Hans", while others are descendants of old John Winger who was a grandson of old Hans Winger, and son of Adam Winger. After his decease, which took place in Pennsylvania in 1824, the widow with her family moved to Waterloo County, Ontario, Canada, in 1825, and resided in the town of Waterloo, in old Abraham Erb's house for eighteen months, then she moved two and one-half miles north of the town of Waterloo, on the place known as "Freunds" (now Eli Martins), opposite the Martin Mennonite Church. Here she resided until her death. Her family consisted of nine children"

OUR FAMILY BARNS \endash by Grayden SLOWINS:

The oldest barn still in existence in our family is that of my Mennonite relatives at Martindale, Lancaster County, PA. A stone barn built by Joseph & Elizabeth ZiMMERMAN WENGER in 1797, it has been well maintained and added to, and cows are still milked there every night & morning. Also teams of horses call it home, along with a black buggy, a John DEERE tractor with steel lugs, and a spring wagon painted John DEERE green & yellow. The "new" house, also of stone, was built in 1800 to replace the old structure Joseph was born in, in 1769. They were my great-great-great-great-grandparents. His sister Elizabeth ZIMMERMAN WENGER married his wife's brother Christian ZIMMERMAN, and when Elizabeth ZIMMERMAN WENGER was widowed, she sold he farm to Christian & Elizabeth WENGER ZIMMERMAN, so the current owners are doubly cousins to us.

The second oldest barn, on the nearby farm at Groffdale, PA, of our five times great-grandfather, Christian WENGER, who emigrated from Switzerland in 1727, was replaced "new" in 1811. It is also largely built of stone. The foundations of the old barn are nearby.

The third oldest barn is a little unpainted wood barn built for widow Elizabeth ZIMMERMAN WENGER when she moved with her family from Martindale, PA, to Martin's Corners, Waterloo Township, Ontario, in 1825. The stone house and white wood church are also still standing.
