    Fatal Accident in Toronto

Death of Mr. Wm. Lovett, of Galt

    Toronto Mail of Wednesday

A terrible accident occurred on Court Street yesterday morning. An engine and cylinder, consigned to the Methodist Book Rooms, had been received from the works of Cowan & Co., Galt. The machinery was carted up to the rear entrance of the book rooms, and about 10 o'clock the work of transferring it from the wagon to the printing office began. Superintending the work was a man named Wm. Lovett, employed by Cowan & Co., and sent from Galt to look after the engine until it was finally placed in the position intended for it. A few minutes before eleven o'clock the workmen engaged were lifting the engine bed, a heavy piece of iron work, from the wagon to place a wagon to the ground. Lovett leaped from the wagon to place a block underneath the bed at a point where it was expected to rest, but before he could do so the bed fell upon, crushing him beneath its weight. He was carried in an unconscious condition to an apartment in rear of and in connection with F. E. Dixon's leather belt factory, where he was laid upon a coupled of shutters and a few canvass bags placed under his head. It was then seen that his right leg was broken, and that he had received several severe contusions about the head. A doctor was summoned, and in a few minutes Dr. Aikins arrived. He discovered that the unfortunate man had received severe internal injuries, in addition to those already mentioned, and was of the opinion that he could not survive. Lovett recovered consciousness shortly after the doctor's arrival, and at once asked what the matter was. Then he complained that he had a cramp in the right leg (the leg that was broken), and opening his eyes exclaimed in a frightened manner that he could not see although his eyes were opened. Presently he seemed to realize his position and asked in a pitiful way what was to become of his wife and children. To a sergeant of police who asked he said that his name was Wm. Lovett, and that he came from Galt. "Lord help me, Lord help me," he continued to repeat for many minutes. The ambulance was sent for but when that vehicle arrived it was deemed inadvisable or useless to remove the injured man. An hour later he was dead. The body was subsequently removed to the Morgue. Rev. D. Dewart was present during Lovett's last moments and is services as a clergyman were accepted by the unfortunate man.

The news of the fatal accident was wired to Mr. Cowan, Galt, and he arrived in the city yesterday afternoon. Arrangements were made by him to have the body taken to Galt by the C.P.R. train west. The members of the Ancient Order of Foresters, to which the deceased belonged, kindly assisted and had the body prepared for interment.
