    Notes:

It is our painful duty to record the death of Mrs. (widow) Heipel, which occurred [sic] on Friday evening last, shortly after six o'clock. She had been in her usual good health until the preceding evening while visiting her daughter, Mrs. Ottmann, when she was suddenly stricken with paralysis of a fatal type and from which she never rallied. Her only absent child, Prof. Chas Heipel , of the Nashua (New Hampshire) business college, was at once telegraphed for, but she had passed away before his arrival. The funeral occured on Monday afternoon, the remains being laid away to rest in the Lutheran cemetery north of the village, in the presence of an immense concourse of friends, after which services were held in the church by the pastor, Rev. Mr. Holm. Deceased was born in Germany on Feb. [?]th, 1835, and, three months later in that year her parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Doering, immigrated [sic] to Canada and settled at Philipsburg. Here the deceased lived with her parents until 185[4?] when she was married to the late John Heipel, the young couple taking up the bush lot, now on fine farm of their eldest son William at Doering's corners. Many years later they removed to the farm at New Pussia [sic], now owned by a younger son, Mr. Geo. Heipel, remaining on this farm until 1893, when they retired from farming moving to this village, where Mr. Heipel died about five years ago. Their family consisted of William at Doering's Corners; Adam (Councillor) ; Elizabeth, who died when three, years old; Andrew; Christina (Mrs. Peter Ottmann); John George, and Charles. She was of a kind, loveable disposition, and had a wide circle of warm friends, especially among the elder people of this section. The bereaved family have the heartfelt sympathy of the entire community in their loss.

    DIAMOND WEDDING

It is not many who have the privilege of enjoying sixty years of married life, but last Thursday, Sept. 8th, Mr. and Mrs. George Scheifele celebrated this exceptional feature in life's journey. Their family being much separated did not find it possible to be together for the occasion. But a number of their church friends kindly remembered the event and came provided to have a few hours social time in the evening. Before dispersing Rev. Mr. Hehn led in family worship and one of the pleasant circumstances as that Mrs. Scheifele was able to lead in the singing of a hymn which was part of the wedding service sixty years go. Congratulatory addresses were given by a number of those present and all departed wishing the aged couple much comfort of mind and body in their declining years.

Mr. Scheifele is now in his 83rd year and Mrs. Scheifele in her 80th year. The former came from Germany when about 2 years old and the latter, Miss Philipena Grosz, when 17 years old. They were married in Conestogo by the Rev. Frederick Bindeman, and settled in St. Jacobs, where Mr. Scheifele followed the trade of shoemaker. He had only $5 with which to go to Galt to get a supply of leather &c. for his business, but he says the dealer there made the remark that he looked like a Dutchman and an honest man and he would trust him for $60. They remained in St. Jacobs some 7 years when they removed to Floradale where they spent some 31 years on a farm, and returned to St. Jacobs 22 years ago.
Their family consisted of 3 sons and 6 daughters, six of whom are living. The daughters are Mrs. Gregor, of Clifford; Mrs. John Sattler, of Berlin; and Mrs. Jacob Sattler, of Heidelberg. The sons are Tobias, of Winnipeg; Noah, of Minnesota; and Matthew, of Iowa. There being no boys present your correspondent wasn't in it.

An Old St. Jacobs Citizen Passes

On Monday, Mr. Geo. Scheifele, one of St. Jacobs oldest residents, passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Jacob Sattler, Heidelberg, where he had been residing since the death of his wife last April. The deceased had been suffering for a long time from kidney trouble, and last Thursday it was decided that he should be operated on. As he thought this would bring relief to his suffering. The operation proved too much, owing to his weak condition and advanced age. The deceased came to this village about 60 years ago, engaging in the shoemaking business for some time, when he moved onto a farm near Floradale. About twenty years ago he moved back here, where he resided until the death of his wife about five months ago. During his life he was a good and faithful member of the Evangelical Church, always, when able, attended prayer meeting and Sunday school, and was well known and respected by a large number of people in this district. He was over 85 years of age. Three sons and three daughters are left to mourn the loss of a kind father, namely, Mattias and Noah, of Minnesota, Charles Tobias, of Winnipeg, Mrs. Catherine Kreutzer, Clifford, Mrs. Barbara Sattler, Berlin, and Mrs. Mary Sattler, Heidelberg. The funeral which took place on Wednesday afternoon, to the Evangelical Church, St. Jacobs, thence to cemetery, was largely attended.
