    SEILING, Donald C. On Sunday. March 20, 1992, fighting to the end. Donald Clarence Ira Seiling was born in Elmira, December 20, 1923, the son of Albert Seiling and Edna Mackie. He was married to Gertrude Martin on January 9, 1943 and lived in Elmira and area all his life.

    Don worked in the family poultry and farm business and more recently was active in standardbred horse racing. He was involved in recreation and minor sports in Elmira for many years.

    He is survived by his wife of almost 50 years, Gertrude; four sons and their families, Rod and Sharon of Toronto, Ken and Kathy of Elmira, Don Jr. at home and Ric and Janice of Buffalo. He will also be very much missed by his grandchildren, who were his special friends, Michael and his wife Cara, Bradley. Heather, Scott, Amy, Mark, Megan, Melody, Krystal and Zachary. He is also fondly remembered by his sisters, Bette Musselman, Shirley Braid and Jean and her husband Carl Trapp and his nieces and nephews.

    He was predeceased by his parents and a sister, Dorothy.

    The family looks forward to meeting and sharing fond memories with family and friends at the Dreisinger Funeral Home, Elmira, Monday (tonight) 7-9 p.m. and Tuesday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. At noon on Wednesday, transfer will be made to St. James Lutheran Church, Elmira, for funeral service at 2:30 p.m. with Rev. Donald Stroh officiating, followed by interment in St. James Lutheran Cemetery.

    The Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 469, Elmira, will conduct a memorial service on Tuesday eve ning at 6:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Donations to the St. Mary's and K-W Hospital Foundations would be appreciated as expressions of sympathy.

    SEILING, Gertrude Irene (Martin) August 15, 1924 - August 12, 2014

    Just 3 days shy of her 90th birthday, Gert (or Trudy as she was known to some) passed away peacefully. Predeceased by her husband Donald and her parents Edith and Emerson Martin, she is survived by her children Rod (Sharon), Ken (Kathryn), Don, and Ric (Leslie). Her flock included 12 grandchildren; Michael, Brad, Heather, Scott, Amy, Mark, Megan, Lisa Marie, Melodie, Krystal, Zachary, and Jeremy and 10 great- grandchildren; Alexandra, Sarah, Spencer, Morgan, Grayson, Emily, Mason, Sadie, Wellington and Ripley, all of whom she loved and who loved her as a grandmother and great-grandmother. She is also survived by her brother Erle Martin (Anne) and her sister-in-law Jean Trapp. Gert spent many hours in arenas following her sons' hockey careers. Her time in Elmira was spent in many community activities which included being a Charter Member of the Elmira Royal Canadian Legion and the Elmira Curling Club. She was a lifelong member of St. James Lutheran Church in Elmira. She was well known in standard bred racing circles as she, Don, and Don Jr. raced horses in Canada and the United States. She was well known for her spirit, sense of humour, and her pride in her family. Special thanks to the medical staff on the Grand River Hospital 6th floor and Freeport for the loving and tender care provided in her last days and to the folks at St. Jacobs Place who provided such a caring home for her. Visitation will take place at the Dreisinger Funeral Home in Elmira on Thursday, August 14 from 7-9 p.m. and on Friday, August 15 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral will be at St. James Lutheran Church, Elmira at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 16. Interment to follow in St. James Lutheran Cemetery, Elmira. Memorial donations may be made to St. James Lutheran Church Restoration Fund or to the Grand River Hospital Foundation.

    Albert Seiling dies of crash injuries By Record Staff Writer

    ELMIRA - Albert Seiling, 72, of Elmira died Monday at Petrolia Hospital from injuries suffered in an accident near Sarnia a week ago. A former mayor of Elmira, Mr. Seiling was born in Carrick Township March 17, 1898, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Seiling. He had been a Holstein breeder and, until his retirement in 1967, was proprieter of Seiling Chicken Hatchery here.

    Surviving besides his wife the former Edna Mackie, are one son Donald of Elmira; three daughters, Mrs. Arthur (Bette) Musselman, Mrs. Carl (Jean) Trapp and Mrs. Ronald (Shirley) Braid, all of Elmira; a brother, Gordon of Elmira; three sisters, Mrs. William (Margaret) Forester of Poole and Mrs. Herbert (Rose) Oerhring (sic) and Lila Seiling, both of Elmira; 14 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

    The body will be at the Dreisinger Funeral Parlor until Thursday at noon when removal will be made to Zion United Church for a service at 3 p.m. with Rev. M.E. Reuber officiating. Burial will be in Elmira cemetery.

    l Have a Dream! After World War ll, John Gotdi, was a disenchanted civil servant in Switzerland. By 1950 he had two more children after Hans, Heidi, and Fred. He dreamed of a better life for them in a land far from the sectarian strife of war-torn Europe.

    THE GOOD OLD DAYS BEFORE CANADA

    His private passion was raising champion chickens as a hobby, in an enclosure behind the apartment buitding in which his family lived. His prize Mechelners won awards all over Switzerland for their laying prowess. Hardly a picture was taken in those post-war years which didn't feature chickens, chickens with kids, or kids with chickens. Below with Hans (John), who does not seem to be contemplating a career in the chicken business. Slowly a dream to turn his hobby into a profession became an obsession to move to Canada which was advertising itself as the perfect place for men of means who had initiative, were independent, self-reliant, and who were willing to work in agriculture like John Goldi clearly was. Above and right Hans (John), the otdest, Heidi and Fred, posed for their studio portraits taken in their "going to Canada" out?ts. ....

    Albert Selling: Because of John Goldi's reputation as a breeder of champion chickens, famous Elmira chicken mogut Albert Semng, sponsored him to Canada, and John went to work for him for a few months in a hatchery Albert bought hockey sticks for Fred and John, who learned the national sport of their new country on the streets of Elmira. Though Aibert had tried his best, neither John or Fred made it to the NHL. (But Albert's grandson Rod, who was six years old, at the time, did. With typical modesty he always said he learned everything he knew from the Goldi boys.) But wage employment was not what Dad wanted. So he bought a farm with his lite sayings.     PATENTS ARE VALID ON EGG INCUBATION
    U.S. Companies and Govern- ment Both Fail in Court Suits


    Ottawa, January 30. The Exchequer Court today handed down two judgments in which it held Canadian patents of both the Smith Incubator Company, of Cleveland. Ohio, and of Albert Seiling, of Elmira, Ont., for incubation of eggs are valid.

    Rulings of the court mean the Government lost in its efforts to have the American company's patent declared invalid while the Smith Company and its licensee, the Buck-eye Incubator Company of Springfield, O., failed in its action attacking the validity of the, Seiling patent. It was intimated following the judgments the battle may be carried by appeal of the Government to Supreme Court of Can- ada. In broad terms, the two inven- tions differ in the application of heat and air.

    Approximately 1,000 hatcheries are operating in Canada. About 700 utilize the Smith or Seiling makes of incubators, patents on which the court adjudged valid. The remainder use methods covered by some 10 other Canadian incubator patents, whose validity validity has not been challenged so far before the courts. Proceedings were instituted in the Exchequer Court some months ago by the Smith and Buckeye companies against Seiling on the strength of a decision they obtained in the United States Supreme Court last January against an American patentee.

    The Canadian Government then hand stepped in and and launched an action to have declared invalid the Smith patent which has only five years. to run in Canada. Action of the Government was taken on representations of Canadian hatchery operators they were being pressed to use incubators covered by the Smith patent.

    In a lengthy judgment in the action of the Government against the Smith Incubator Company and the Buckeye Incubator Company seeking to have the Smith patent declared invalid, Justice Angers reviewed the claims of invention in the Smith patent issued by the Canadian Patent Office, April 18, 1922. He concluded: "However it may be, I have, not unhesitatingly I must admit, reached the conclusion, based on the evidence adduced before me, that the patent in suit is valid.

    "There will be judgment declaring the patent valid and dismissing the action." Rejecting the suit of the Smith and Buckeye Companies claiming infringement by Seiling of the Smith patent, Justice Angers in this judgment said in part: "The method used by the defendant for the circulation of heated air in the incubator and the tilting of the eggs is, as I have pointed out, quiet different.

    "I fail to see any infringement by the defendant (Seiling) of Patent No. 217,777 (the Smith patent) and there will in consequence be judgment dismissing the action...

    The Seiling patent was issued by the Canadian Patent Office April 7, 1931.

    ALBERT SEILING LOSES VALUABLE BEAGLE HOUND

    Mr. Albert Seiling who sometime ago shipped three of his valuable Beagle hounds to the States for trial runs last month received a telegram from Windsor on Friday, telling him that one of his dogs was dead and the other two were sick and that they would be shipped from Windsor on Friday noon. On October 12th Mr. Seiling shipped his dogs to Windsor and from there, they were to be reshipped to Chippawa Lake, Ohio, to run in the Derby, but thru some unavoidable reason they were too late for this trial run. They were then shipped to Allegam, Mich., and entered in the Wolverine trials and altho the dogs were sick, one of them won a silver cup and the other the Reserve Prize. However, their condition was so bad that their caretaker thought it advisable to cancel the Western trials at Bass Lake, Ind., and the Canadian National at Windsor. Mr. Seiling will take good care of the two remaining dogs and bring them back into good running shape again.

    Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 23 at 3 p.m. for Mrs. Albert Seiling, the former Edna Mackie, who passed away Saturday in her home 97 Arthur Street, Elmira.

    Mrs. Seiling was 77 years of age. She is survived by daughters, Mrs. Arthur P. Musselman, Mrs. Ronald (Shirley) Braid, Mrs. Carl Trapp, all of Elmira, fourteen grandchildren and five greatgrandchildren. Her husband, Albert Seiling and three brothers and one sister predeceased her.

    Funeral services were held at Trinity United church, Burial, Elmira cemetery. Trillium Rebekah Lodge honored the deceased in a special memorial service, Tuesday night.

    MARTIN, Edith (nee Beckner)

    Passed away peacefully, on Sunday, Feb. 26, 1995, at St. Mary's Hospital, in her 93rd year.

    Edith Martin was born and raised near Hawkesville in 1902 and later lived in Elmira and Kitchener. She was a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church and was a proud employee of Seagram's where she worked for 21 years. She most recently resided at LaFontaine Retirement Home.

    She is survived by her daughter, Gertrude Seiling and her son Erle Martin and his wife Anne, together with seven grandchildren, 11 great- grandchildren and one great-great- grandchild.

    Predeceased by her parents, Carolyn Oswald and Henry Beckner; her sister, Leona and her brother, Harry.

    Visitation at the Schreiter- Sandrock Funeral Home & Chapel, 51 Benton at Church St., Kitchener, today (Tuesday), where the family will receive friends from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral services will be held from the funeral home chapel on Wednesday, March 1 at 2 p.m., Rev.     John Seiling, 85, Elmira, was almost instantly killed at 5: 30 p.m. Sunday when he was struck by a car in front of the home of his son, Albert, on Arthur Street.

    The accident occurred at the dangerous five-point intersection of Arthur street, South street, Edward street and Streeter Lane.

    Police Chief Harry Jarvis, who investigated, said the car, driven by Elmer M. Bauman, 19, Springwater, Saskatchewan, and owned by his brother, Abner M. Bauman, R.R. 1, Elmira, struck the man as he crossed the intersection from west to east. The car was proceeding north.

    Mr. Seiling is believed to have suffered a fractured skull and died of brain injuries.

    He was carried into hs son's home and attended by Dr. J. T. McCullough. He was dead when the doctor arrived.

    Dr. Le Roy Wagner, coroner, was called.

    Mr. Seiling's clothing was badly torn. His watch was found on the pavement, stopped at 5: 30.

    The right front headlight was knocked off the car and the right front fender was damaged.

    Chief Jarvis said there were no actual witnesses to the accident.

    Walter M. Martin, the only passenger in the car, said he didn't see Mr. Seiling until he was right in front of the car. The car struck him immediately. There was no inquest.

    Charges are being laid against the driver.

    The accident resulted in Elmira's first traffic fatality since August, 1938, when a five-year old boy was killed at Arthur and Water streets.

    At the time of the accident Mr. Seiling was returning home from work at the Seiling hatchery, owned by his son with whom he lived.

    Born near Hanover, Mr. Seiling had lived in Elmira for four years.

    Surviving are his wife, the former Elizabeth Lasch; two sons, Albert and Gordon of Elmira; four daughters, Mrs. William (Margaret) Foerster of Poole and Mrs. Gertrude Payne, Mrs. Herbert (Rose) Oehring and Lila of Elmira; one sister, Mrs. Sarah Helwig of Hanover; 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

    The body was at the Dreisinger Funeral Parlor., The funeral service was held Wednesday at 2: 30 p.m Burial was in the Elmira Union Cemetery. Rev. C. B. Heckendorn officiated.

    Recording:
    Park of a series consists of 40 oral histories conducted by a committee in the former Town of Elmira. The project began in 1974 when Abner Martin, Manager at the Canada Trust had a dream that people were being interviewed about the history of Elmira. Abner told his dream to Harry Wintsch and Harry got his wife, Enid involved.     Mrs. John Alexander Mackie, 85, of 155 David St., died Sunday at the Elmira Private Hospital after an illness of four weeks.

    She was born at Winterbourne November 10, 1870. She was a member of Trinity United Church.

    Her husband whom she married March 15, 1893, at Elora, died in 1932. She was predeceased also by two sons, Harvey and Howard, and a daughter, Mrs. Otto (Elsie) Schreiber. Surviving are a son, W. G. Leonard Mackie of Kitchener; three daughters, Mrs. Albert (Edna) Seiling of Elmira, Mrs. George R. (Gladys) Ambrose of Kitchener and Mrs. Harold C.     HENRY BECKNER

    Henry Beckner, 76, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Emmer- son Martin, 21 Rose St., Kitchener, on Wednesday morning, after a lengthy illness and having sustained sev- eral strokes. He had been living in Kitchener for about six months.

    He farmed on the town line of Hawkesville until four years ago when he moved to the village. Mr. Beckner was a life-long member of St. James' Lutheran Church. Elmira.

    He married the former Caroline Oswald of Woolwich 49 years ago. His wife and three children survive. They are Harry and Mrs. Arthur (Leona) Reist of Winterbourne and Mrs. Emerson (Edith) Martin of Kitchener. There also are six grand-children and, one great grandchild; one sister, Mrs. Oscar Taylor of Vancouver and one brother Tilman of Detroit.

    The remains are resting at Dreisinger's Funeral Home. Funeral ar- rangements have not yet been made.

    Mrs. Caroline Beckner, 82, of Hawkesville died Tuesday, July 21. She was the widow of Henry Beckner, who died in 1947.

    After her marriage, she lived on a farm in Woolwich Township until 13 years ago when she and her husband retired to Hawkesville. She
    was a member of St. James's Lutheran Church, Elmira.

    Surviving are one son, Harry of Kitchener; two daughters, Mrs. A. (Leona) Reist of Kitchener and Mrs. E. M. (Edith) Martin of Elmira, six grandchildren and six great-grand-children.

    The body was at the Dreisinger Funeral Parlor until Friday at 1 p.m. when removal was made to St. James's Church for funeral at 2:30 p.m. with Rev. Henry Baetz officiating. Burial was in St. James's Cemetery.
