    Raymond J. Taylor By Record Staff Writer

    ELMIRA An Elmira District High School teacher and former town councillor. Raymond J. Taylor, 48, died in K-W Hospital Monday.
    Mr. Taylor coached many school teams to championships in basketball and track and field. He also coached local minor hockey teams for more than 10 years.

    A town councillor for six years, he had been chairman of the fire and police committees.

    Mr. Taylor was a former supervisor of the swimming pool here and a director of the Central Western Ontario Secondary School Athletic Association.

    He was past president and secretary of the Elmira Community Service Club and a past chairman of the Recreation Council. For seven years he was secretary of the Elmira and Woolwich Agricultural Society sponsor of the Elmira Fall Fair and a member of the Lions Club
    Mr. Taylor was an elder of the Wesley United Church and superintendent of the junior Sunday school.

    An RCAF veteran of the Second World War, he was a prisoner of war for two years.

    He spent his boyhood in British Columbia and obtained bachelor of arts degree at McMaster University. Prior to the war he taught school for four years at Watford.

    Surviving are his wife, the former Arlene Smith; two sons James and Thomas: four daughters, Anne, Catherine Mary Ruth and Nancy, all a home; his mother, Mrs. Henry H. Taylor, Chilliwack, B.C five brothers, William of Kitchener, Edwin and Russell Burlington, Allen of Vancouver and Gordon of Cypress River Man.; three sisters, Mrs. Jame (Margaret) Flowers of Woodstock, Mrs. Earl (Dorothy) Miller of Chilliwack and Mr Charles (Alice) O'Malley Vancouver

    The body will be at the Dreisinger Funeral Parlor, Elmira, until Wednesday noon when removal will be made Wesley United Church for sevice at 3 p.m. Rev. Donald Bager will officiate. Interment will be in Elmira Cemetery.

    Arlene Taylor, (nee Smith) - Arlene Taylor passed away, peacefully, on December 22, 2004, in her 93rd year, surrounded by her six children and many of her grandchildren.

    Arlene was a long time resident of Elmira where she and her husband Raymond came to live following the Second World War. Their small farm and apple orchard were well known to many. When Raymond died unexpectedly in 1961, she returned to teaching, becoming the principal of Guiding Light School. Throughout her active life, she was well known for the gallons of tea she consumed, the hours of bridge she played, her love of gardening, the spontaneous visits to friends, and her loyalty and service to her family, church and community.

    Arlene's extensive family includes Jim and Lynette Taylor of Allen Park and children Julia, Arlen, Raymond (RJ) and Jamie (deceased). Anne and Tony Arrell of Toronto and children. Laura (Eric) Arrell-Joyal, Cameron. (deceased 1992), Ashleigh, and Nicole, Tom Taylor of Elmira and children. Tracey (Greg) Riddell, Laurie (John) Cossey, and Terri (Ron) Taylor, Kathryn and Ken Seiling of Elmira and children Heather, Scott (Michelle), Amy, Mark and Megan, Mary Ruth and Vernon Job of Holstein and children Jennifer (Jeff) McDougall, Treva, Kerri and Isaac, and Nancy and Gary Mifflin of Waterloo and daughter Allison. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren, Michael, Daniel, Melissa, and Andrew Cossey and Spencer Seiling.

    She was predeceased by her parents, William and Anne Jane Smith, and her sisters, Mildred Earl and Leta King.

    Heartfelt thanks go to Alfie Anco who was a very special friend to Arlene during the last few months.

    Visitation will be at Dreisinger's Funeral Home, in Elmira on Thursday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A celebration. of her life will be held at Trinity United Church, 21 Arthur Street North in Elmira on Friday December 24 at 11 a.m. followed by interment in Elmira Union Cemetery.

    In lieu of flowers, memorials can be given to the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Association, to Trinity United Church in Elmira, or to a charity of your choice.

    Grandma Taylor always loved having her family and friends visit, especially at Christmas. She has suc- ceeded in having her family and friends gather with her one last time to celebrate Christmas 2004.
