    Death Of Katherine Morton

Conducted Grocery and Dry Goods Business in Air for Number of Years

The death of still another of Ayr's older residents occurred on Sunday at the home of Mrs. Mary McCrow, Keg Lane, near Paris, in the person of Katherine Morton, in her 79th year. Miss Morton had been in ill health for about one year, and had been staying at the home of Mrs. McCrow for some three weeks. Miss Morton was born on the Morton homestead, just east of the village, being a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Morton. As a young lady, she acted as a clerk in the general store of the late William Baker, and later had charge of the ladies' wear department of the late C. H. Gerbig's general store. Miss Morton then went into the merchandising business on her own account, conducting a grocery and dry goods store for several years in the stand on Stanley street now being used as a war salvage room. She subsequently removed to the store now occupied by E. C. Krantz. She finally sold the business, in 1913, to W. A. Upton, after which she clerked for some years for the John White Company, Woodstock. Miss Morton was possessed of a friendly, genial disposition and was highly esteemed by a host of friends. She was a valued member of Knox United Church. Surviving are two brothers, Robert Morton, Ayr, and James Morton, Glenmorris. The funeral took place this (Wednesday) afternoon from her late residence, Hall street, interment being made in Ayr Cemetery.

    Death of Mrs. Elizabeth Morton
    - One by one the old residents are passing away "to the bourne from whence no traveler ere returns." This week it is our sad duty to chronicle the death on Sunday, Oct. 15, of another old and most highly esteemed resident in the person of Mrs. Elizabeth Morton, Elliott Street, wife of the late William Morton, at the age of 77 years. The deceased, who had been in declining health for some time, was born near Kilmarnock, Sorn district, Ayrshire, Scotland. Her maiden name was Elizabeth Mitchell. She came to Canada about 55 years ago, settling in North Dumfries, where, about half a century since, she married. Her husband predeceased her about 21 years. She had been a long time member of Knox church and was a most consistent member. Thoroughly domestic in her habits, she was greatly beloved by a very wide circle of friends and acquaintances. A family of ten children blesses the union, eight of whom are living. They are Robert and James in North Dumfries, Margaret and Mary in Toronto, and Jane, Jessie, Katie, and Christina at home. The funeral on Tuesday afternoon to the Ayr cemetery was very largely attended, the services at the house being conducted by decease's esteemed pastor, Rev. John Thomson, who was assisted by Revs S. O. Nixon and S. Card. The pall-bearers were old and respected friends of the family, comprising Messrs. Wm. Edgar, North Dumfries, Wm. Richmond, South Dumfries, John Currie, Ayr, J.K. Rutherford, North Dumfries, Geo. McCartney, North Dumfries, Jacob Young, Ayr.
