From the 1861 census of Canada we can learn much of what life was like for the Korner family after a dozen years in Canada. Michael and his family were living in a 1½ story log house on 50 acres of land. Of these 50 acres, 40 were under cultivation with the remaining 10 acres being woods. Thirty acres were planted in crops, 10 acres were pasture. It was estimated that the value of the farm was $1000 and implements were worth $100. A breakdown was given what crops were planted, animals kept and products produced. Fall wheat was 3 acres yielding 50 bushels. Spring wheat was on 15 acres yielding 200 bushels. Two acres were planted in barley yielding 40 bushels, oats were planted on 6 acres with a yielding of 300 bushels. Michael had also planted 3½ acres of peas yielding 50 bushels while an acre of potatoes yielded 75 bushels. Michael also listed ½ acre of beans but nothing was listed for total produced. The family put up 6 tons of hay, 18 lbs of wool, 20 yards of fuled cloth and one yard of flannel. Livestock consisted of 1 bull, 4 steers or heifers, 2 milk cows, 7 sheep and six pigs valued in total at $235.00. He also had 3 horses valued at $150.00 along with two colts. Finally the farm also yielded 25 lbs of butter and 400 lbs of pork.
