    _______________________________________________________________

Isaac Cressman's great-great-grandfather, Nicolaus Cressman, a native of Switzerland, emigrated to the United States at an early age. In 1806, Isaacs' father, Abraham Cressman, came to the Strasburg vicinity in Waterloo County, where Issaac, his seventh son was born. Isaac resided in the Cressman Homestead, located in a beautiful wooded area where there were a tremendous variety of trees. This unique area was known for a long time as Cressman's Woods, and now is designated Homer Watson Park. Great credit is due the memory of Cressman for his determination to keep for posterity this magnificent forest that had developed through countless centuries. Because of its uniqueness, part of the property was appropriately selected as the site of the Doon Heritage Crossroads.

Cressman married Barbara Schneider, a daughter of Jacob E. and Elizabeth Schneider, in 1854, and they had five children. On the death of his wife in 1865 he married her sister, Elizabeth. Eight children were born to this couple.

Many of Cressman's descendants live in and around Waterloo County.

Schmitt. - Jacob B. Schmitt was born in Wilmot Twp., Ont., Nov. 28, 1845; he was married to Magdalena Snyder Oct. 20, 1867. This union was blessed with 9 children, three of whom died in infancy. His companion died July 25, 1885. On Oct. 31, 1886, he was married to Catharine Shantz. This union was blessed with three children, of whom only one survives. On Oct. 16, 1924, his second wife was also laid to rest, whose loss he felt keenly. He died Dec. 20, 1925, after a brief illness of heart trouble and dropsy; aged 80 y. 22 d. He leaves 7 children, 35 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren, and one sister. The family has lost a loving father, the Church a faithful pillar, the community a kind neighbor, one who was ever ready to be of service to others. Bro. Schmitt was born on the farm, where he lived all his years, and reached the ripe old age of four score years. On Nov. 28 it was his desire that his family and a few others help celebrate his 80th, and as it proved, his last birthday. "This shall be my last birthday," he said, and he lived just 22 days longer. Funeral services were conducted Dec. 24th, by Orphen Wismer, Manassah Hallman, and C. F. Derstine. Text, Eccl. 12: 5.

HALLMAN. - Catharine (Shantz) Hallman died Dec. 1, 1905, aged 63y., 2m. She was the wife of Jacob Hallman, who still survives. Beside her husband she leaves three children and eight grandchildren. A week or two before death came she wished to have the family gathered back to the old home and remarked that she thought it was the last time they would be together here. She was a member of the Mennonite church for many years and a faithful Christian to the end. For years she was a patient sufferer and we now praise God for the good evidence and the bright hope that she is now free forever from all suffering. The children and one grandchild are in the service of Christ. Pray for the husband that he may heed the loud call to keep the commandments of the Lord. A large congregation assembled at the funeral services which were held Dec. 5 at the Latschar church, near Mannheim, Waterloo Co., Ont., where Noah Stauffer and A. D. Wenger spoke from II Cor. 4: 17-5: 1.
