Roseville United Brethren in Christ Church

Although early meetings are reported to have begun in the Roseville area as early as 1860, it was not until 1881 that Rev. George Backus of New Dundee came to the area to conduct regular services in Roseville homes on Sunday evenings. The first services were held in the home of Mrs. Jacob Bricker; there were seven charter members in the group. Shortly after this time, c.1884, the present church building, which was originally of frame and dates to 1852 when it belonged to a Lutheran Congregation, was bought from the Wesleyan Methodists who had acquired it earlier from the Lutherans. The first United Brethren in Christ pastors after Rev. Backus were Revs. David B. Sherk and Jacob. B. Bowman. The congregation remained on a circuit until 1969 when the connection ended with New Dundee and Roseville became independent. A parsonage was purchased in 1971 and on September 9, 1973 a sod-breaking ceremony was held for the Christian Education addition. Dedication services were held on October 6, 1974.
A split in the United Brethren in Christ in 1889 resulted in two groups calling themselves by that name. One group joined the Congregationals in 1906. The other group remained United Brethren in Christ until November 16, 1946 when most congregations of the United Brethen in Christ organization joined with the Evangelical Church to form the Evangelical United Brethren Church - later to join with the United Church on January 1, 1968. This congregation is one of three United Brethren in Christ Churches in Waterloo County today. The others are Stanley Park in Kitchener, and New Dundee. The headquarters of the church is in Huntington, Indiana.
Although the building was originally of frame construction, remodelling and renovations have resulted in the church building of today.

    Hallman Meeting House

It is not known just when the first log meeting house of the Hallman congregation was built. However, on June 1, 1847 a one-acre plot of land, for a meeting house and burial ground, was deeded from Adam Unger to trustee, Jacob H. Detweiler. This land was east of Roseville on the northwest corner of Lot 31, Concession 11 of North Dumfries Township, and on the south side of the Blenheim or Roseville Road, which was built westerly from Galt. A stone cairn made up of old tombstones stands on this property today.

A new brick church, called Hallman Mennonite Church, was constructed in 1854 (Burkholder 1935: 104) or 1856 (Taylor 1970: 282) on land on the north side of the road, just west of the old meeting house. The congregation is reported to have disbanded in 1891. The property was sold soon after.

Death of Adam Unger, Esq. \endash One after another the old settlers of our county are passing away. On Saturday evening, August 17th, inst., there passed away this well-known and highly respected resident of Waterloo County at the residence of his son, Mr. Moses Unger, Blair. Mr. Unger, sr., had been ill for some months, suffering from the disease known as dropsy, and his death at the advanced age of eighty-eight and a half years was not unexpected by his large circle of friends.

Deceased was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, February 7th, 1801, emigrated to Canada in 1812, and in the year 1824 was married to Margaret Hallman.

After their marriage they settled on the farm now occupied by Mr. Noah Bricker, near Roseville, and here carved out for themselves a comfortable home.

In the year 1862 Mr. Unger retired from the farm, moved about a mile near Galt, where he resided a few years, after which he removed to Roseville until the death of Mrs. Unger in the year 1884, when he came to spend the evening of his life with his son, Mr. Moses Unger, at Blair.

Deceased was much respected by all with whom he became acquainted, being of a retiring disposition and a consistent member of the Mennonite Church.

The funeral on Tuesday was largely attended by people who came from far and near to pay the last tribute of respect to their old and esteemed friend.

His family consisted of seven children, of whom six are yet living, viz.: - Mr. John Unger, Waterloo; Mr. Benjamin Unger, Berlin; Mr. Moses Unger, Blair; Mrs. Wendell Clemens, Michigan; Mrs. Martin Grimm, near Milverton, and Mrs. Jacob Bricker, near Roseville. A worthy life ended full of years and enjoying the love of his relatives and esteem of his friends.

    A SENSATIONAL SHOOTING MATCH.

An old familiar character in the neighborhood was the late Adam Unger, whom Providence evidently never intended should die an unnatural death. It is said by old citizens that he would frequently be seen walking barefooted through the hot ashes of the clearing apparently as unconcerned as if he were walking upon Brussels carpet. One day Adam bad a miraculously close call from lightning. On this occasion he and his hired man were logging when a thunder shower came up and they sought shelter between two logs. A flash of the electric current instantly killed the hired man, but Mr. Unger was unharmed. The hired man very profane person, and on was a very occasions previous to this in fits of anger would invoke the Almighty to strike him dead. Providence moves in a mysterious way, indeed, and the fact that Unger escaped unharmed leads one, not even superstitiously inclined, to believe that it was an act of Him who controls the elements to satisfy a wish of one of his creatures. The sad occurrence created quite a sensational morsel of news all over the country.

At another time Providence seems to have interfered in behalf of Unger. One day many years ago a shooting match was in progress at the old tavern now occupied by Mr. Knechtel, the weaver, and the contestants were shooting at a target down the road in the direction of Mr. John Perrin's lane. Unger and his wife drove by in sleigh and when they had reached a hundred yards or so distant from the shooters he felt a sudden sting in one of his heels. On examination when he arrived home revealed a wound which plainly told that the heel had received a rifle bullet, the result of careless marksmanship. All efforts to extract the bullet proved useless, and for many years prior to his death he was to a certain extent troubled by the leaden messenger which he carried with him to his grave.

Family lore indicates that Samuel died coming from from a circus and died of cholera and was buried at the side of the road, His horse was brought to his widow.

    _____________

From an account of the cholera epidemic in which Samuel perished is below.

"The most striking and melancholy example within our knowledge of the generations and effects of the local infection occurred in this vicinity in the summer of 1834.

On the 28th of July, 1834, Galt, a village on the Grand River, U. C. was visited by Showmen with a Menagerie. It was exhibited under an awning of canvass, nearly enclosed at the sides, and drawn together in a conical form almost to the top. The day was excessively warm, and the crown suffocating. The exhibition lasted about 3 hours. It is estimated that about 1000 persons were present, and that not less than 200 of them died of Cholera within ten days. The population from which the assembly at the exhibition was composed, in the Township in the vicinity of Galt, it supposed to be about seven thousand.

The first case was in one of the Showmen, who sickened on that day, which was Monday. No other case occurred until the following Wednesday morning - on that day not less than thirty were attacked all of whom had been at the show - The greatest number of cases were on the Thursday and Friday following - but new cases occurred for several days. In speaking of an attack, we here allude to the time the patient supposed the attack commenced - the time he was "taken down" . The average length of time the disease lasted after this event was about sixteen hours.

Four days previous to the exhibition of animals at Galt, two children of Mr. J. G., on the Governor's Road, 12 miles south east of Galt, were attacked with Cholera, one of which died. On the same day (24th July,) two cases of what we shall call second grade Cholera came under our care, being the first that occurred of that form of the disease within our knowledge that season - About this time also, many were affected with first grand symptoms, - but with the exception of the children alluded to we have not been able to learn that any case of fully developed Cholera occurred in this part of the province previous to the exhibition of animals at Galt, and for several days subsequent to that event, and in which more than two hundred were attacked with Cholera, all had been at that exhibition with only two or three exceptions. From the 6th of August the disease became more general and not confined to such as were at the Menagerie; but this time it appeared at Hamilton and Dundas - situations more low and marshy than Galt, and adjacent to Burlington Bay of the Head of Lake Ontario. From these facts it is evident that a deteriorated state of the atmosphere existed previous to the 28th July, yet the fatal catastrophe following the exhibition at Galt was mainly attributable to the highly vitiated, or imperfectly oxygenated air, produced by the numerous and sweltering crowd under the canvas - the ventilation being altogether inadequate for so numerous and crowded assemblage. It also appears that at Hamilton, Dundas and several other situations the Epidemic influence was the product of the more common causes of general infection, united with a local infection, which last is caused by the action of heat upon putrescent vegetable matter...."
