    DEATH OF JAS. P. PHIN, J. P.

    J. P Phin, justice of the peace, and one of the most representative agriculturists of Waterloo county, died on Thursday evening, Jan 24th at his home, "The Grange," near Hespeler, after a week's illness. He was in his 60th year, and death was caused by pneumonia. Mr Phin, who was the defeated Liberal Reform nominee for the south riding of Waterloo, in the last Provincial election, held many important offices. He was a director of the North Dumfries and South Waterloo Fire Insurance Company, and in recognition of his efficient services was elected president of the company but death a few hours later prevented him from ever filling the office. He was also a director as well as a member of the managing board of the Guelph and Ontario Investment and Saving Society, and was director of the South Waterloo Farmers' Institute, and a member of the South Wellington Agricultural Society. J R Phin was a member of the Masonic fraternity, and a Methodist by religion. He was also noted all over Canada as a breeder of Shropshire sheep and short-horn cattle, his flocks and herds on his magnificent farm near Hespeler including many highbred registered animals. The funeral was held on Sunday and was very largely attended by many prominent people from the district and from a distance.

    Notes:

Death of James Phin, Esq., of Kennaquhair, Waterloo.

This aged gentleman passed away on Monday last in his 88th year.

For many years Mr. Phin occupied a prominent position in the active life of, this county, as an agriculturist, politician, and leader in the social improvements demanded as the years rolled by. But although living to what may be called a great age, Mr. Phin for many years was a strong man and was reluctantly compelled to relinquish his active assistance to projects which he deemed useful to the people amongst whom he lived and the Province of his adoption. For many years possessed of great wealth, he was able to indulge in the ease his health, demanded, and at the same time surrounded himself with the literature which his active mind demanded.

Mr. Phin leaves two sons who are well known in this section, being prominent as farmers and also in municipal and business concerns of this and adjoining Counties. Mr. John Phin, long associated with the conservative party in this Riding, was on one occasion its standard bearer for the Provincial Legislature, and though then defeated, won the respect of all shades of the electorate and has since been foremost in promoting the welfare of the party in the Riding. Mr. James Phin, the other son, is also widely known, being a prominent member of the liberal party, and also in the municipal record of the Township in which he lives, having been its Deputy-Reeve at one time and for the last two years its Reeve. Both brothers are prominent Agriculturalists and are also Directors on the Board of the Guelph and Ontario Loan and Investment Society of Guelph. Mrs. (Sheriff) Scarfe, of Brantford, is a daughter of the gentleman whose death we now chronicle.

Mr. Phin's funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon to Hespeler cemetery, and was attended by an immense concourse of his old friends and friends of the family from all sections of the Province.

FUNERAL OF THE LATE JAMES PHIN. -
The funeral of the late James Phin took place on Wednesday afternoon and was attended by perhaps the largest concourse of people ever gathered together on a similar occcasion in Waterloo Township. Besides his old friends and neighbors, there were many from Guelph, Paslinoh, Galt, Hespeler, Preston, and other places, who had come to show their last mark of respect for one who had lived so long in the Township and held a prominent position in it. Rev. Mr. Haigh and Rev. Dr. Cornish, of Hespeler, conducted the services at the house, after which many had an opportunity of taking a last look at the placid features of the deceased. The cortege then proceeded to Hespeler, the pallbearers being Lewis Kribs and Dr. McIntyre, of that village, James Young, Galt, David Stirton, Edmund Morris, and James Innes, M. P., Guelph. On arriving at the the cemetery, cemetery, Rev. Dr. W. Williams, of Lindsay, read the burial service according to the Methodist form, after which all that was mortal of the deceased was consigned to the earth. The company then adjourned to the Methodist church, where a solemn memorial service was conducted by Rev. Dr. Williams, and old friend and formerly deceased's pastor.
