A FAMILIAR FIGURE GONE.

On Monday. Aug. 27th, Mr. Chas. Seigle, sr., aged 76 years, 9 months and 2 days, died after a brief but painful illness. The deceased gentleman was indeed a familiar figure in Hespeler and vicinity, having lived in the County of Waterloo for upwards of fifty years, over forty of the same being spent in this village. Deceased was a native of Weidenberg, Germany, and emigrated to the United States in 1833. After living there for four or five years he came to Canada and cast his lot in this county, living first in Berlin, then in Bridgeport and finally Hespeler. He was married twice, his first wife living but shortly after their union in marriage, leaving no issue. He married his second wife 39 years ago, who lives to mourn his loss, and seven children, all grown to manhood and womanhood, namely, Mr. Chas. Seigle, farmer; Mrs. W. H. Smith formerly of Toronto, of Colorado: Mrs. Elley, of Toronto and Mrs. Abrabam Ruddel, near the City of Guelph, also three unmarried daughters living at home. The funeral of the deceased gentleman took place on Tuesday, the 28th, and was largely attended, the Rev. Mr. Haigh, pastor of the Presbyterian church, officiated and preached a pathetic funeral sermon at the late residence of the departed. Mr. Seigle is another example of what opportunities are open to young men in this young, but ever growing country. Coming here without means of gaining a livelihood beyond his own strength of character and manliness, he soon began to acquire considerable wealth until when he died it is safe to say he was one of the wealthiest men of these parts, leaving no less three three valuable farms, besides a very large amount of money secured by safe and remunerative securities. The MERCURY joins in sympathy with the many friends of the respected widow and family in their sad affliction.

On July 12th, 1847, Charles Siegle of the Village of Berlin, in the Township of Waterloo, Yeoman, bought parts of lot one and two numbering from Jacob Hespeler's Mill yard containing one Rood one and three quarters perches of land from Robert Forbes, of the Village of Galt, in the Township of Dumfries in the County of Halton in the District of Gore and Province of Canada for the sum of seventy-eight pounds, two shillings and six pence of Lawful money of the Province of Canada (about three hundred and twelve dollars).

On this parcel of land, Charles Siegle built in 1847, the stone Building which has ever since been used as an Hotel under various names, including "Siegle's Tavern", "The Baker House", "Bowman's Hotel", "The Commercial Hotel" and its present appellation "The Hespeler Hotel".

There is still to be seen a square stone embedded in the Northerly wall which bears the inscription "C.S. 1847".

Even though it was at one time known as "Siegle's Tavern", I have been unable, so far, to satisfy myself that Mr. Siegle ever actually ran this Hotel, at any time.

On the Fourth day of July, 1843, one David Witmer and his wife conveyed to John Clemens, what we now know as The Milne Jamieson farm on the Town Line in Waterloo Township, stated in the deed to contain 134 acres, 2 roods and 16 perches more or less.

On the seventh day of June, 1849, This John Clemens conveyed the Jamieson Farm he had previously purchased from David Witmer, to Charles Siegle.

On the same day, June 7th, 1849, Charles Siegle conveyed the Lands he had purchased in 1847, from Robert Forbes including, of course, the Hotel and other buildings he had meantime erected on the Land, to this same John Clemens. Then Siegle moved on to the farm and Clemens started in to run the Hotel.

Clemens does not appear to have had much luck operating the Hotel and found himself in financial difficulties and until, finally, under an order of Her Majesty's County Court of the United Counties of Wellington, Waterloo and Grey, the Sheriff, George John Grange, sold his property on the sixteenth day of August, 1853, and Charles Siegle bought the hotel property back and obtained from the Sheriff a deed Dated October 14th, 1853 (See B2 Folios 682 and 683).

Now Siegle had both the farm where he lived and the Hotel. He is said to have rented the Hotel property until on the nineteenth day of June, 1856, he sold it to William Baker of the Township of East Flamborough, in the County of Wentworth, Yeoman, who operated the Hotel until his death in 1868, when it passed to succeeding Bakers.
