Joel Good, "the third son of John and Magdalena (Baumann) Good, was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, near Bowmansville, December 29th, 1815. When a few months past two years of age he came to this country with his parents. He received a fair education and devoted the early part of his life to the study of surveying and at present he is ranked with the first of our provincial land surveyors. On November 5th, 1839, he was married to Catherine, daughter of Abraham and Catherine (Biehn) Stauffer. She was born September 5th, 1820, and died May 20th, 1854. After their marriage they moved on the farm he still occupies. After the decease of his first wife he married Agnes, daughter of John and Jane (Calder) Hosea. She was born in Parish Ruthenglen, Lanark County, Scotland, July 23rd, 1834. In 1842 she came to America with her mother and grandparents. The second marriage took place December 18th, 1855. His family consists of fifteen children, six of whom were born unto his first wife and nine unto second wife"

THE OLD SCHOOLHOUSE

An interesting meeting took place the Saturday before last in the old log cabin in Waterloo Park.

This house was, of course, the first schoolhouse in this area and stood originally on the school-house square at the corner of King and Church Streets in Waterloo. It was built in 1820 and served its purpose until 1842, when it was torn down and a 1-storey stone house was constructed on the site. The dismantled log house was erected again in Greenbush and served as a residence for a long time for the coloured man, Mr. Carroll and his family. In the course of this year, the Waterloo Park Commissioners purchased the house, moved it to their park and furnished it again as it was when it was a school-house.

At this gathering, in addition to many other ladies and gentlemen, the following (male and female) former pupils attended, took their places on the benches, and were called to order by the 82-year-old teacher, Benjamin Burkholder, who held the scepter, or rather, the switch, from 1831 to 1842 in the old log-house: Joel Guth, 80 years old; Abraham Scherk, Blair, 79; Jakob Bricker, Waterloo, 77; Sarah Burkholder, nee Erb, Bridgeport, 75; Amos Weber, Berlin, 73; John C, Bricker, Hawksville, 71; Maria Erb, nee Quickfall, Norwich 69; David B. In addition, to these, the teacher read the names of 25 pupils from the roll; they were, however, absent.

Mr. Burkholder gave an interesting talk about the history of the old school-house, and after him, Rev. J.A. MacLachlan, Rev. J. McNair, Mr. J.E. Baumann, M.P., and Mr. Jakob Ratz spoke about the old days which brought many things out of the past to mind again. School was, as a rule, only in session in winter and the costs were borne by the parents of the children. There were few subjects taught, namely: Reading, Writing and Sums. The children heard little about language, and geography; no child had more than 2 or 3 books. The predominant language was German. The pupils learned to read and write English, but didn't understand a word of it. Among the teachers in the old school-house from 1820-1842, with the exception of Mr. Burkholder, were the following whose names are still recognized: Jephtha DeKay, Joseph Guth, John Herringer, Peter Otto, John Dobbin, Elias Eby, Robert Barber, & Joseph Eby.

After those present, on hearing the various speeches felt themselves transported back to the past, the school was closed at four o'clock and the pupils were gathered together in front of the school and photographed as a group. On their return into the school, they found it had been transformed into a dining room with heavily-laden tables, which the old-timers thoroughly enjoyed. After everyone had chatted cordially for a while longer, the gathering broke up. The company will not meet again in complete numbers, nor in such a way.

A Pioneer Gone Death of Mr. Jacob Erb

The news comes to hand today of the death of one of the oldest pioneers of Waterloo township, in the person of Jacob B. Erb, yeoman, who lives three miles west of Waterloo. The deceased was in his 86th year and the cause of his death was a paralytic stroke on Tuesday morning, which at his advanced age proved quickly fatal, and he passed away on the evening of the same day. Mr. Erb was born and raised two miles north of Bridgeport and was one of those who tilled the virgin soil of this county. He married Mary Clemens, daughter of Jesse Clemens. The union was blessed by ten children, seven whom survive him. Mrs. Erb died in May of the present year. The funeral of Mr. Erb will be held on Sunday morning, Sept. 10th, at 9 o'clock next to the Mennonite burying ground, at David B Eby's, two mile west of Waterloo. The deceased was known throughout the county and had a wide circle of friends and relations who will mourn his loss.

ACCIDENT BY LIGHTNING - We learn from the Berlin Telegraph that on Monday afternoon before last, during the heavy thunderstorms in West Woolwich, the dwelling house of Mr. Francis Compass, was struck by lightning, and himself, father, and Mr. Jacob Erb, of Waterloo Township, who was on a visit to Mr. C., were severely injured.

Mr. C. had his pantaloons and boots burned and torn off him by the lightning, and the lower portions of his body literally crisped and denuded of skin. His father, a quite aged man, had both arms burned so that the skin hung in shreds...his two thumbs were almost torn off his hands, at the lateral joints, while his legs and feet are burned and lacerated most piteously. Mr. Erb had both legs badly burned, and his feet torn very much. One toe was split as if with a knife.

At the time of the casualty, eight persons were surrounding the front door of this dwelling which was open, all of whom were knocked senseless to the floor and more or less injured. A little girl had her face burned. The electric current left a charred track upon the floor,, and at length, ripped up a couple of board, and disappeared in the cellar. Dr. N. B. Wulfe of Mt. Jacobs, was sent for, who was soon upon the spot and dressed the wounds of the sufferers. We are sorry to learn that Francis Compass and his father are both in a very dangerous condition.

Death of an Old Settler

Mrs Jacob B. Erb, residing three miles west of the town of Waterloo, died yesterday morning after a long illness. She was over eighty years old and has lived about sixty on the same farm where she died. Her maiden name was Clemens; her relatives live in the vicinity of Hespeler. She leaves six sons and one daughter and a large number of grand and great-grand children. Her husband also survives her, though about 85 years old and quite infirm, having been entirely blind about twelve years. The funeral will take place on Saturday at 9 o'clock a.m. at the house of the deceased. Her remains will be interred at Eby's cemetery, two miles west of Waterloo.

A-2-70 Abraham Stauffer The Last Will and Testament and Codicils of Abraham Stauffer the elder, late of the Township of Waterloo, Yeoman, who died on or about the 29^th April 1860 at the Township of Waterloo, and who at the time of his death had a fixed place of abode at the Township of Waterloo, was proved and registered in the said Surrogate Court, a true copy of which said Last Will and Testament and codicils are hereunder written, and that the administration of all and singular the personal estate and effects rights and credits of the said deceased and any way concerning his will was granted…to David Gingrich of the Township of Waterloo, Yeoman, and Jacob Hagey of the Township of Waterloo, Yeoman, Executors named in the said will and codicils…

…I, Abraham Stauffer Senior…I will and order that my funeral, testamentary and other expenses and all my just debts be paid by my Executors hereinafter appointed, out of my estate so soon after my decease as practicable, and all the money and other effect due and payable to my Estate be collected and all my personal or other property that I may be possessed of at my decease shall be sold and made into money as soon as conveniently can be done and to the best advantage of my estate by my Executors…I will and order that all my children shall be made alike and equal in accounts in my Family Book, as may be seen reference being had thereto. I give, devise and bequeath all the rest and residue of my estate, real, personal and mixed of which I shall be seized and possessed, or to which I shall be entitled at the time of my decease to all my children and their heirs share and share alike, as follows, that is to say to my son Eli and his heirs one equal share thereof, to my son John and his heirs one equal share thereof, to the heirs of my son Joseph deceased one equal share thereof, and to the heirs of my daughter Katherine deceased late the wife of Joel Good, one equal share thereof. Codicil (1) : I, Abraham Stauffer, named as the Testator in the will within contained do hereby make this present Codicil which I do order and direct, shall be taken as a part of my written Last Will and Testament, and which will, in all respects excepting wherein it is altered or changed by this Codicil do hereby republish and confirm I hereby give and bequeath to my Grandson William Stauffer, the son of my son Eli Stauffer, the sum of two hundred dollars which I have this day paid to him, without interest, and which said two hundred dollars I will and order shall be deducted out of and from the share of my son Eli Stauffer…

Codicil (2) I, Abraham Stauffer named as the Testator in the Will to which this is attached or annexed do hereby make this present Codicil which I do order and direct shall be take as a part of my annexed Last Will and Testament, and which Will, in all respects, excepting wherein it is altered or changed by this Codicil, and another Codicil bearing the date the 20^th November 1855, do hereby republish and confirm; I will and order that the share given to my son Eli Stauffer shall not be paid to him as mentioned in my will but my Executors shall retain his share in their hands and pay him so much thereof from time to time out of said share, as they, my Executors shall in their wisdom see that he actually stands in need of and at the decease of my said son eli, the share or part of share as shall there be remaining in the hands of my Executors, shall be equally divided among the children of my son Eli, share and share alike. I will and order that my Grandson William Stauffer shall pay the two hundred dollars mentioned in my first Codicil as shall be hereinafter mentioned that is to say, it shall be divided into as many shares as my son Eli has lawful children and my Grandson William Stauffer shall pay to each of the said respective children one share, commencing to pay the eldest one year after my decease and so on down to the youngest child, one share yearly and every year until they are all paid in full without interest. But I further will and order that should my son Eli make a Will and deduct two hundred dollars out of the share of my Grandson William, and that in such case he is debarred from receiving from his Father's estate his full share. Then I will and order that he shall not pay the said two hundred dollars as aforesaid to his brothers & sisters…

Beside the many hardships, labors and sufferings in getting here and making themselves homes, quite a few settlers along where Blair is now situated were visited by a fire this spring of 1806.

On the 6th of May fire was set to a Job [a tract of land with timber slashed down ready to be burned so that the land could be farmed later] of 10 or 15 acres, soon after which a great wind arose, and swept through the new clearings and destroyed fences, houses and barns.

Abraham Stauffer had his barn burnt.
Abraham Bechtel had his house and barn burnt.
Jacob Bechtel's house was saved but his barn and everything else were consumed.
Nathaniel Dodge who was the last of the settlers along the river, had two barns with all their contents burnt.

The fire went on making the most fearful destruction of all kinds of valuable timber. Thus those settlers who were probably the most advanced with their new homes were suddenly left without house, food or clothing, and were obliged to go below Dundas through mud, water, swamp and forest for provisions and other necessaries, which were not obtainable from their neighbors.

In the will of her husband Abraham, Catharine is not mentioned which is would be uncommon unless she was previously deceased. The only reference to her death is from the Biographical History of Waterloo Township giving it as 1860. In the absence of other proof this date is the being used.

Peter Erb, "the second son of Peter and Anna (Schãeffer) Erb, and brother to Daniel Erb, was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, January 13th, 1787. On December 14th, 1806, he was married to Susannah Bomberger who was born in the same place, September 17th, 1787, and died April 3rd, 1867. In 1807 they, with others, moved to Canada and settled in what is now Waterloo County, Ontario. They located on the west bank of the Grand River, about two miles north of Bridgeport, on the farm now known as the 'Wismer Farm'. Here they resided until their deaths. He died February 24th, 1865. To them were born eleven children, all born in Waterloo County, Ontario"

On Febr. 24th, in Waterloo Co., Canada West, of apoplexy, Bro. Peter Erb, aged 78 years, 1 month and 10 days. He was born in the State of Pennsylvania-was married on the 14th of November 1806, with Susanna Bomberger and emigrated to Canada in 1807, where, as a peaceable citizen, he experienced, with others, the difficulties of a new country. He had, with his wife, who is still living, 11 children, three sons and eight daughters. He enjoyed good health generally until he reached his 75th year, when his strong bodily powers were shattered by a stroke of apoplexy, from which he suffered by repeated attacks until at last, as we hope, he fell asleep in the Lord. "... On the 18th day of June, 1812, President Madison declared war against England. This placed the Pennsylvania people in a very trying position and as they could not be induced to take up arms, they were pressed into service as teamsters and were obliged to furnish their own horses. Ox-teams were employed when no horses were to be had. Those who were required to serve in this capacity were Christian Schneider Jr., Peter Erb, Joseph Eby, Samuel Eschelman, Benjamin Springer, Frederick Herner, Jacob Bock, Henry Pannebecker, John Scheirich, Henry Wismer, John Biehn, Adam Shupe and Wildfong.

In January, 1813, General Proctor defeated the Americans near Detroit, capturing General Wilkinson with 500 men. In September General Harrison having been joined by a fierce body of riflemen from Kentucky, advanced towards Detroit in such force that General Proctor crossed the Detroit River and retreated up the Thames. On being followed by the American Army of 3500 men, he made a stand at Moraviantown with 800 British and 500 Indians under Tecumseh. This warrior was killed, and Proctor retreated in great confusion to Burlington Heights in order to join the Niagara Army. A number of the Waterloo people were up at the battle on the Thames. These Waterloo boys acting as teamsters had taken shelter in a swamp near by while the battle was being fought. An officer of the British army, seeing that all was lost, gave them warning, said 'Boys, all is lost, clear out and make the best you can,' upon which some ran, while others unhitched their horses and rode off for their lives. Christian Schneider Jr., who carried the money-safe on his wagon, cleared out on his horses, leaving the wagon with all its contents behind. In this defeat old Adam Shupe was taken prisoner by the Americans. He was taken before General Harrison who, perceiving his innocent and harmless appearance, dismissed him and granted him permission to return to his Canadian home. He lost both his horses and wagon. Christian Schneider was away the greater part of the summer. On his first trip he had a two-horse team. After being home a few weeks he had to go again, this time with a four-horse team. During this war which lasted a little more than two years, quite a number of small battles were fought in the Niagara Peninsula and in the vicinity of Detroit. Quite a few of these Pennsylvania Dutch boys were pressed to serve as teamsters and exposed to all manner of danger, but strange to say, not one lost his life through the war.

On the 24th of December, 1814, peace was made between England and the United States, leaving each in exactly the same position as they had been before the war. After peace was restored the government of Canada fully compensated those teamsters for their losses during the war and for their valuable services. Christian Schneider Jr. was paid $5.00 a day for the time he served with a two-horse team, and $8.00 per day for a four-horse team, besides they were paid for horses and wagons that were lost during the time they served the government."

On the 3rd of April, in the same township, of dropsy, widow SUSANNA ERB, aged 79 years, 6 months and 19 days. Her maiden name was Bomberger. She was born in Lancaster Co., Pa.., She was buried at Christian Eby's burying-ground. She was a member of the Mennonite Church and died as we have reason to hope a happy death. Funeral sermons were preached by the brethren Moses Bowman, G. R. Schmidt and Tillman Moyer.

Jesse Clemens, second son of Abraham and Rebecca (Miller) Clemens, was born in Chester County, Pennsylvania, June 12th 1791. In 1809 he came to Canada and settled in Waterloo County, near Hespeler. He was married in 1813 to Margaret Miller, who was born in July, 1789, and died October 18th, 1861. They resided on the farm now in possession of Noah Scheirich, about three miles north-east of Preston where they commenced to farm soon after their marriage. To them were born nine children"

Clemens, - on the 6th of January, in Waterloo Co. Ont., of the infirmities of old age and dropsy, Bro Jesse Clemens, aged 90 yrs.,6 mos. and 24 days. he was born in Chester Co.Pa in 1791 and was a faithful member (sp) of the Mennonite Church. He bore his bodily afflictions with great patience, and showed an unbroken faith in Christ to the end. He was buried in Hagey's burying ground. services in English and German by J. Woolner.
