We recently called at the SWEET BRIAR FARM where we found Mr. Peter S. Bricker in charge. He is certainly the right man for the place and the executors of the estate were fortunate in getting such an able man and practical farmer to lease it. Since he took the farm he has pruned the trees nicely, new barns have been erected, in which he is feeding a splendid lot of cattle, pigs, and a tine lot of dairy cows. Mrs. Bricker has things about the house always neat and tidy. Her excellent butter has a good reputation in town, and is all purchased by Dunke & Co., our popular farm grocers. Her poultry is of the best and is well kept. We wish this young and industrions couple continued prosperity on this coveniently situated farm.

Bricker. - Isaac Bricker was born in Oxford, Co. Ont., Sept. 24, 1835; died at the home of his daughter near Kitchener, Ont., Apr. 21, 1926; aged 90 y. 6 m. 28 d. On July 8, 1856, he was married to Lydia Snider who died in Mar. 5, 1904. He leaves 6 sons, 4 daughters, 34 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. One son predeceased him. Bro. Bricker had been a member of the Mennonite Church for many years and took an active interest in the work. His place at service was seldom vacant until old age would not permit him to attend. Funeral on April 24, 1926, with service at the home by Bro. J. W. Witmer and at the Blenheim Mennonite Church by Bro. M. H. Shantz. Texts, Amos 4: 12 and Acts 3: 19. Buried in adjoining cemetery.

ISAAC BRICKER

The traveller who wanders over much of Blenheim township has his attention considerably taken up by the numerous handsome residences he sees on every hand. Mr. Bricker's residence on the fourteenth concession is one that particularly attracts his attention for its dimensions and elegant appearance. Some time ago the writer, who having had occasion to a tarry a short time beneath its roof, was astonished at the remarkably convenient arrangement of the interior. In fact it is the best equipped in this respect of any farm residence he ever entered. It contains sixteen rooms, eight down stairs and a like number upstairs, in addition to the basement, which is partitioned off into six rooms. In the latter is a fine large furnace. From the furnace lead hot air pipes which convey hot air to every room in the house if desired and the entire interior made comfortably warm in a few minutes. There is no danger whatever from fire, as the floor consists of solid portland cement, brick walls and other fire proof material There are seven hot air registers and five for cold air. In the various departments the vegetables, canned fruits, etc, are stored. Two of these are such connected with a dumb waiter, in the kitchen above is combined with a cupboard. By this means the tired housewife is saved the trouble of daily climbing and descending the stairway with a full of eatables, etc.

The residence, it will be observed, is double structure, one not being occupied by Mr. Bricker and wife, and the other half occupied by son, Isaiah, and family. As you enter the front doorway you find spacious hallway and a splendid open stairway which is divided by a banister. The apartments occupied by the parents are duplicated in that portion occupied by the son. Beautiful stained glass in the front, lends attractiveness to the interior of the hall. The wood work is neatly carved black ash finished in oil. In the basement is a large furnace with boiler for heating water for washing clothes, butchering, etc., and adjoining which is a large brick woodshed On top of the roof of the main dwelling is a square space surrounded by a handsome iron railing. From this space a magnificent view of the country for a radius of from five to six miles can be obtained, and the blue capped environments of Woodstock, at least twenty miles to the southwest are plainly visible. This residence can be seen from quite a distance ere you reach it. On the left hand side of the lane as you enter is a new hedge of Norway spruce, Scotch pine and Canadian cedar intermingled. To the right is a row of maples and basswood. The residence is certainly one of consider able architectural beauty and is principally of Mr. Bricker's own design.

Mr. Bricker was born on lot 6, 14 h concession, in 1835, on the old homestead hewed out of the wilderness back in the thirties by his father, the late Peter Bricker. The latter was born near Chicopee in 1808. The mother, formerly Susanna Erb, was born near Bridgeport, Waterloo County, in 1816

She died at the age of seventy-six years, and she was followed by the father in 1892, aged 84 years. They were for many years prominently identified with this section and endured their share of the hardships incident to the early settlement of Blenheim township. They moved to lot 6 in 1834 at a time when the Asiatic cholera was raging in this section. The mother was taken down with the deadly terror, but she fortunately survived and was spared to her husband and family. They had lived on the 15 h concession forty years, and subsequently in Berlin for seventeen years. After that they moved to the home occupied by Henry Cassell near Haysville, where they lived about a year when they died.

Isaac the subject of this sketch, received a very limited education, his only chances for acquiring knowledge, being during the winter months in the primitive school. He being the oldest child in the family his services were therefore naturally in greater demand by the father. He faithfully remained subject to parental authority on the old homestead until he was twenty-one years of age. At about that time he formed a matrimonial alliance with Lydia, daughter of Benjamin and Elizabeth (Detweiler) Snider. The mother is now in her sixty-sixth year. The result of this union is a family of eleven children, distributed now as follows:

Oliver, the oldest child and son, is in Manitoba; David is farming near Doon; Benjamin and Peter are twins, Peter working on the farm of Joe Bower's and Ben cultivating tobacco in Essex county; Sarah is the wife of Aaron Bowman near Mannheim; Mary is the wife of Noah Bowman of Roland, Man; Isaiah, wife and child living at the home place; Isaac is employed with Mrs. Hall, near Plattsville; Lydia is the wife of Jacob Bergey in Manitoba; Melinda is the wife of Aaron Bergey of Bellerue on the Allegheny, Pa; Anson is still living at home.

Mr and Mrs Bricker did not come to this their first home as man and wife on a bed of roses. It was in sad contrast to the elegant home they can now call their own and live in peace and comfort during the remaining years of their life. An old frame house was then their abode, and the premises were sparsely provided with the necessary conveniences. But harmoniously they went to work, gradually making improvements, tilled their land and reared their large family, finally accomplishing the results I have just described. While they are now not actively engaged in farming they strive to keep their minds occupied in a minor way. A garden, several cows, a few hogs and chickens being about the extent of their farming at present is the chicken coop they take consider able pride and well they may, for one must go many miles before he finds as fine a lot of fowl. Among the lot I noticed some splendid specimens of the partridge cochin, light Brabmas, black Langshans and Plymouth Rocks. In the barnyard will be found a number of fine porkers of the Tamworth and Berkshire variety.

Mr. and Mrs. Bricker are both members of the Mennonite church with which they have been connected for a period covering nearly forty years. The former has been trustee of his school section for quite a number of years and is always favorable to anything that tends to promote the best welfare of our public schools.

During the earlier years of the married life Mr. and Mrs. Bricker seldom travelled any distance from home. But of late years they have seen considerable of the country, having visited their children in Manitoba and some years ago went on an excursion to the Niagara Falls.

They are now enjoying life to life fullest extent in a quiet christian way, being well entitled to the fruits of many years of toll and well spent life.

Isaiah, the son, has charge of the farm and is having good success. In his stables are several find roadsters. In ….. particularly taken with the way is arranged for convenience Jacob's Ladder, as the old men calls in is to its idea of his own. It is a stationary affair in the centre of the barn reaching from the floor to the roof. In 1876 this bar was struck by lightninage and totally destroyed. It was a set back and quite serious loss to the father at the time

BRICKER.-In Blenheim Twp., Oxford Co., Ont., on March 5, 1904, Lydia, wife of Bro. Isaac Bricker, aged 70 Y., 9 M., 27 D. Sister Bricker was ill for only a few weeks and dangerously ill for only a few days, so that the messenger of death came rather unexpectedly to her friends. She leaves a sorrowing husband, seven sons and four daughters, whose loss, we believe, is her eternal gain. Funeral services on March 8, at the Blenheim Mennonite M. H., where Bro. M. Cressman spoke in German and Bro. E.S. Hallman in English to a large and attentive audience. Buried in Blenheim Mennonite cemetery. Thus "He giveth his beloved sleep."

BRICKER.-Near Washington, Ont., on March 5, 1904, Sister Snyder, beloved wife of Isaac Bricker, aged 70 Y., 9 M., 26 D. She suffered for about two weeks until the death angel relieved her. She leaves a husband and eleven children, some of them living in the West and Northwest, one daughter in Pittsburg. The remains were laid to rest in the Blenheim cemetery, where services were held by Menno Cressman (text, Rev. 14: 13) and E.S. Hallman (text, 2 Cor. 5: 1 and Acts 3: 19).

Peter Bricker," the eldest son of old Samuel and Rebecca (Erb) Bricker, was born at Chicopee, Ontario, May 16th, 1808. On June 10th, 1834, he married to Susannah, daughter of Peter and Susannah (Bomberger) Erb. She was born November 27th, 1816, and died February 23rd, 1892. On June 12, 1834, they moved on their farm, being composed of lots Nos. 6 and 7, 14th concession, Blenheim Township, Oxford County, about two miles south-east of New Dundee, Ontario, where they resides forty years, then they moved to Berlin where they had their home for seventeen year. The last of their earthly pilgrimage were spent with their son-in-law, Mr. Henry B. Cassel, who resides two miles west of Haysville, Ontario. Here they died. His death took place June 8th, 1892. To them were born seven children..: "

On September 26th, 1843, he was again married to Esther, daughter of Abraham and Barbara (Shuh) Miller. She was born October 23rd, 1814, and died September 9th, 1855. He resided a little west of Roseville, Ontario, where he was the owner of one of the finest tracts of land in Ontario. Here he was engaged in farming for many years, but when well advanced in years he retired from farming and had his home with his children. He died at Roseville, May 25th, 1892. His family consisted of eleven children, of whom the eldest six were born unto his first wife."

Samuel Bricker,"the youngest son of Peter and Mary (Bear) Bricker, was born July 25th, 1776. He, in company with his brother John and family, Joseph Bechtel and family, and others, came to Canada in spring, 1802. They took up land in Waterloo County, Ontario, near Blair. In autumn, 1802, more than a dozen families had settled within the county. In March 1803, Mr Bricker was obliged to visit "Little York" (Toronto) to transact some private business. While there he received the sad intelligence that the whole of the township of Waterloo was mortgaged.† On his return to Waterloo he informed the settlers of the fact, and in order to prove the report of their friend, the settlers appointed Jacob Bechtel and Samuel Betzner to go to "Little York" and make a though investigation in regard to the mortgage. To their great surprise, they, in making inquiry at the Registry Office, found the report too true and that the amount of the mortgage was $40,000. covering 60,000 acres of land. Mr Samuel Bricker and Joseph Shirk were appointed by the settlers to return to their friends in Franklin, Cumberland, and Lancaster Counties, Pennsylvania, to make arrangements in raising sufficient money to lift the mortgage, upon which the company still known as the "German Company" was formed. The stockholders entrusted the required sum of money to extinguish the mortgage to Samuel Bricker and Daniel Erb who carried it all the way to Canada on a conveyance. At their return to Canada the money was paid over to the proper parties and thus the mortgage was cancelled. In 1801 Mr. Bricker was married to Rebecca, eldest daughter of John and Rebecca (Hershey) Eby. She was born April 14th, 1781, and died November 4th, 1861. They settled near Chicopee, a little north of Freeport, Ontario, on the east side of the Grand River. Their farm is now in possession of Richard Gehl who is married to a grand-child of old Samuel Bricker. Here they resided until their deaths. His death took place November 15th, 1868, aged 92 years, 3 months, and 29 days. Their family consists of eight children"

On the 15th of Nov., 1868, in Waterloo co., Ontario, Samuel Bricker, aged 92 years, 3 months and 29 days. He was buried at Eby's burying ground. Funeral sermons were preached by Abm. Weaver and John Bear, from 1 Thess. 5: 9, 10 and Rom. 6: 7. He was born in Pennsylvania.

The earliest Crown grants in the area were issued, beginning in 1803. to Samuel Bricker (lot 34. concession 8), Philip Saltberger (lot 35, concession 8). and Benham Preston Pots 32- 35. concession 9). Along with seven other families of the Mennonite faith, these settlers took land grants in Whitchurch Township because they were having difficulty obtaining dear deeds for land they had hoped to buy in Waterloo County near Kitchener. Ontario. Bricker was able to borrow enough money from relatives in Pennsylvania to form joint stock company known as the German Company, and this enabled the families to buy the land in Waterloo County. Eight of these families merely cleared the land in Whitchurch, as required, and sold the acreage within a few years. Samuel Bricker, however, held the property until 1847, when he sold the east half to William Graham. In 1852 he sold the remaining west half of his land to John Grose, whose descendants are still there.

Peter Erb, "the second son of Peter and Anna (Schãeffer) Erb, and brother to Daniel Erb, was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, January 13th, 1787. On December 14th, 1806, he was married to Susannah Bomberger who was born in the same place, September 17th, 1787, and died April 3rd, 1867. In 1807 they, with others, moved to Canada and settled in what is now Waterloo County, Ontario. They located on the west bank of the Grand River, about two miles north of Bridgeport, on the farm now known as the 'Wismer Farm'. Here they resided until their deaths. He died February 24th, 1865. On Febr. 24th, in Waterloo Co., Canada West, of apoplexy, Bro. Peter Erb, aged 78 years, 1 month and 10 days. He was born in the State of Pennsylvania-was married on the 14th of November 1806, with Susanna Bomberger and emigrated to Canada in 1807, where, as a peaceable citizen, he experienced, with others, the difficulties of a new country. He had, with his wife, who is still living, 11 children, three sons and eight daughters. He enjoyed good health generally until he reached his 75th year, when his strong bodily powers were shattered by a stroke of apoplexy, from which he suffered by repeated attacks until at last, as we hope, he fell asleep in the Lord. "... On the 18th day of June, 1812, President Madison declared war against England. This placed the Pennsylvania people in a very trying position and as they could not be induced to take up arms, they were pressed into service as teamsters and were obliged to furnish their own horses. Ox-teams were employed when no horses were to be had. Those who were required to serve in this capacity were Christian Schneider Jr., Peter Erb, Joseph Eby, Samuel Eschelman, Benjamin Springer, Frederick Herner, Jacob Bock, Henry Pannebecker, John Scheirich, Henry Wismer, John Biehn, Adam Shupe and Wildfong.

In January, 1813, General Proctor defeated the Americans near Detroit, capturing General Wilkinson with 500 men. In September General Harrison having been joined by a fierce body of riflemen from Kentucky, advanced towards Detroit in such force that General Proctor crossed the Detroit River and retreated up the Thames. On being followed by the American Army of 3500 men, he made a stand at Moraviantown with 800 British and 500 Indians under Tecumseh. This warrior was killed, and Proctor retreated in great confusion to Burlington Heights in order to join the Niagara Army. A number of the Waterloo people were up at the battle on the Thames. These Waterloo boys acting as teamsters had taken shelter in a swamp near by while the battle was being fought. An officer of the British army, seeing that all was lost, gave them warning, said 'Boys, all is lost, clear out and make the best you can,' upon which some ran, while others unhitched their horses and rode off for their lives. Christian Schneider Jr., who carried the money-safe on his wagon, cleared out on his horses, leaving the wagon with all its contents behind. In this defeat old Adam Shupe was taken prisoner by the Americans. He was taken before General Harrison who, perceiving his innocent and harmless appearance, dismissed him and granted him permission to return to his Canadian home. He lost both his horses and wagon. Christian Schneider was away the greater part of the summer. On his first trip he had a two-horse team. After being home a few weeks he had to go again, this time with a four-horse team. During this war which lasted a little more than two years, quite a number of small battles were fought in the Niagara Peninsula and in the vicinity of Detroit. Quite a few of these Pennsylvania Dutch boys were pressed to serve as teamsters and exposed to all manner of danger, but strange to say, not one lost his life through the war.

On the 24th of December, 1814, peace was made between England and the United States, leaving each in exactly the same position as they had been before the war. After peace was restored the government of Canada fully compensated those teamsters for their losses during the war and for their valuable services. Christian Schneider Jr. was paid $5.00 a day for the time he served with a two-horse team, and $8.00 per day for a four-horse team, besides they were paid for horses and wagons that were lost during the time they served the government."

On the 3rd of April, in the same township, of dropsy, widow SUSANNA ERB, aged 79 years, 6 months and 19 days. Her maiden name was Bomberger. She was born in Lancaster Co., Pa.., She was buried at Christian Eby's burying-ground. She was a member of the Mennonite Church and died as we have reason to hope a happy death. Funeral sermons were preached by the brethren Moses Bowman, G. R. Schmidt and Tillman Moyer.

Christian Schenider, "was born August 28th, 1758. In 1789 he was married to Elizabeth, daughter of Christian and Maria (Scherch) Erb (See No. 2777). She was born in Warwick Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, January 23rd, 1770, and died in Waterloo County, Ontario, September 29th, 1818. In 1806 they, in company with others, emigrated to Canada and settled in Waterloo County, Ontario, near where now is the village of Doon. Here he resided for a number of years. It was his intention to construct a dam across the creek flowing through his plantation and have a grist mill erected thereon. But in order to have the desired "head of water" he found that the "back water" would flood a few acres of Mr. Biehn's swamp adjoining that of his (Mr. Schneider's) property, This, although worth nothing, or comparatively little, Mr. Biehn would not sell to Mr. Schneider and thus prevented the building of a grist mill. Mr. Schneider died August 6th, 1850, leaving a family of eleven children"

Jacob Detweiler," second son of Jacob and Mary (Funk) Detweiler, was a native of Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, where he was born November 25th, 1778. On December 15th, 1803, he was married to Susannah Rosenberger who was born in the same county as Mr. Detweiler, January 15th, 1781. When a young man he was called to the ministry of the Mennonite body, but when the Funkite question was brought up he would not give his decision in favor of either party. However, after his coming to Canada he was an active worker in behalf of the Mennonite church until his death. In 1822 they, with others, moved to Canada and settled in North Dumfries Township, Waterloo County, a little west of Roseville, on the farm now possessed by their grand-son, Aaron B. Detweiler. Here they resided until their deaths. She died September 9th, 1847, and he died August 8th, 1858. To them was born a family of ten children"

I, Jacob Detweiller Senior of the Township of North Dumfries…First I Will and ordain that my funeral expenses and all my just debts shall be paid as soon as possible on convenient after my decease. I Will and ordain that all the residue of my estate shall be divided into nine equal shares or portions and that my sons and daughters shall have each a share, and that the children of my deceased daughters Elizabeth and Nancy have one share each which has to be distributed equally amongst them, but the shares of those who are under age to remain in the hands of the Executors on interest to be delivered over to them when they arrive at the years of majority. And also that my daughter Susanna's portion of legacy be kept in the hands of the Executors when they think that she or her heirs will most need it. And that my two sons Enoch and Benjamin shall have their portions after all the rest of my family have had their portions or legacies. Lastly I do hereby constitute and appoint my two sons in law, Samuel Snyder and Benjamin Snyder Executors of this my Last Will and Testament.
