Young father beaten to death in Kitchener parking lot was turning life around
Nurse on duty when dying son brought into hospital

It was 11 a.m. on June 26 when Dylan Darren DeBreau, 23, was fatally beaten in a Kitchener parking lot, where he was waiting to pick up his six-month-old son. His mother, Lisa Levesque, was working at the Hamilton General Hospital that day. She received a text message from DeBreau's ex-girlfriend, saying that DeBreau was being lifted by air ambulance to the General.

"I'm a nurse. I knew that airlifting meant life or death," she said. Lisa ran down from the cardiac unit to the emergency unit to ask if anyone was en route. "Her colleague said there was a 23-year-old who was unresponsive," explained DeBreau's stepfather, Steven Levesque.

"Then she looked at Lisa and said, 'Oh my God, it's your son.'"

It was one, hard punch in the face that knocked DeBreau backwards onto to the pavement in front of Sunny's convenience store on Lancaster Street. He split his head in the fall.

Edward Joseph Bush, 41, was charged on Friday by Waterloo Regional Police for manslaughter. He has no fixed address....

Man gets 3 ½ years for killing another man with a single punch

KITCHENER A Kitchener man who killed another man with a single punch to the head outside a convenience store last summer was sentenced to 3 ½ years in prison.

Edward Bush, 41, who pleaded guilty to manslaughter, will serve 35 months, taking into consideration time already served.

He's been in a jail since the day of the deadly assault on Dylan Darren Debreau, 23, on June 26.

In a rare moment of emotion, Justice Michael Epstein cried as he told Debreau's family that in his 39 years practising law as a lawyer and judge he's seen seven cases which resulted in the death of a person because of one punch.

Debreau's mother burst out crying as Epstein said he's tried to "preach" to make the young people "appreciate how horrific the consequences of an assault can be."

After the sentence, Debreau's girlfriend Nina Quirion said she was disappointed with the jail time imposed by the judge. Quirion and Debreau had a son, Dalton, who is 10 months old.
