    Notes:

Up to 1860 Peter Longhouse made shingles by hand at his property on the north side of Queen Street East, shown in old Plans as "The Longhouse Lot." Valten Limpert's house is built on part of this lot.

Good large cedar or pine logs were selected as raw material and billets were cut off the ends, some 18 inches, some 24 inches long. These were then squared and split with the grain and the resulting flat pieces usually about half an inch thick were placed in a "Schnitzelbank" (freely translated "Cutting Bench) and the workman, sitting thereon, held the slab by foot power in the vise, while he tapered it and trimmed the edges. Exposed say six inches to the weather, this shingle made a good roof.
