Mr. George Auman, who during the last five years has developed into an energetic, aggressive and successful cattle-dealer, was born in St. Jacobs. When yet a lad he removed with his father to a farm boardering [sic] on the eastern limits of the Corporation of Elmira. After the death of his father, he acquired this farm and cultivated it successfully until the beginning of the current year, when his growing cattle trade demanded all of his time. He disposed of his farm and removed to Elmira. Associated with Mr. Auman, in the cattle business, is his son William, also Mr. Henry Peterson, a man of experience in the trade. The firm does an extensive and growing business in fat cattle, both export and butchers'. They also trade in horses and sheep and supply feeders with stockers, which they bring in car-lots. Their purchases amount annually to over $250,000. Their business is therefore one of the most important in Elmira. The firm also occasionally ship from St. Jacobs and Alma. Mr. Auman was a member of the Woolwich Township Council for six years, the latter two of which he held the position of Reeve. On his removal to Elmira, he withdrew from the field of municipal honors.

    Notes:

After several years of great suffering there died last Monday at the residence of her son-in-law, Mr. Thos. Sherrington, Mrs. Mary Ann Howlett relict of the late John [should read William] Howlett, who was one of the oldest settlers of the Township of Woolwich. Deceased was a faithful helpmeet to her husband in the days of the trials of his pioneer life. Together they built up a fine farm home about a mile east of Elmira and furnished it with all the necessary appointments. They raised a large family of children and left them in comfortable circumstances. After the death of her husband, Mrs. Howlett removed to Elmira where she lived in a house of her own on Church St., for many years. When her disease which resulted in the loss of her feet by gangrene, had assumed desperate character, she was removed to the Galt Hospital in hopes that treatment there would prove more effective. It proved, however, that such should not be the case. Then she was brought back to the home of her daughter, Mrs. T. Sherrington, where everything that duty and love could suggest was done for her until death relieved her of her sufferings.

Deceased was known as a highly respectable lady. She leaves nine children - 7 daughters and 2 sons. They are as follows: - Mrs. G. Glennie, Dauphin, Man., Mrs. G. Auman, Mrs. J.E. Bowman, Mrs. Thos. Sherrington and Mrs. Ph. Lein of Elmira; Mrs. Bracey, of Winterbourne; Mrs. T. McCutcheon, of Chicago, Mr. John Hewlett, of Lakefield, Man., and Mr. Jas. Howlett, of Winterbourne, Reeve of Woolwich Township.

The funeral took place yesterday afternoon and was largely attended by relatives and friends.
