    MCKELLAR, JANET (Nee Campbell)

One of the few remaining links connecting the present with the past was snapped in Galt on Monday at 2 p. m. , July 16, 1894, in her 94th year. Relict of Duncan McKellar. Born in 1800, she was a young woman when the Battle of Waterloo was fought and of her own knowledge, could speak of events, which to the most of us have been merely matters of history. She was a native of Kilmartin in Argyleshire, Scotland. She spent her youth in her native parish and in 1829 married Mr. McKellar. She and her husband came to Canada in 1830 and after living a year or so in Bytown, now the flourishing capital of the Dominion, they came to Galt, arriving in 1832, when but comparatively few houses formed what is now the town. Mr. McKellar's brother, Archibald and his wife had preceded them to Canada and had settled on land on Mill Creek, which even to this day is known as "McKellar's Flats" and here young Duncan and Janet also settled. At this time Mill Creek was in its glory as one of the finest trout fishing streams in Canada and many a white-haired man in our midst today will feel his blood warm at the mention of "McKellar's Flats" and the days of which we speak. The farm became the rendezvous of many a fishing party from Galt and as long as life lasts, many of them will never forget the kindness show them by Mrs. McKellar. But the life of a pioneer is, at the best of times, a hard and an anxious one and in all the struggles of these early days, the McKellars took their full part. Mr. McKellar died about thirty years ago but his widow remained on the farm until a few years since, when she removed to Galt to reside with her son, Alexander, where she passed the evening of her days in a well-earned rest and calmly fell asleep on Monday. She had a family of nine, three sons and six daughters, of whom four are dead. Surviving are: Alexander in Galt; Archibald in Havelock; John of Ingersoll, the western representative of the Soho Machine Works of Toronto; Mrs. McDonnell of Portage La Prairie; and Mrs. McRae of Toronto. The funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon, a very large number of old friends and acquaintances attending to show the last token of respect to one, who had been so long in their midst. Her body was interred in Mount View Cemetery in Galt.
