    Notes:

A-1-6 Charles Zettel: Translated from German original, by C. Enslin, Registrar and Notary Public.

Property Bequest : Charles Zettel, dwelling in New Little Germany, in the presence of witnesses, Joseph Scharbach and George Wiest, appointed as foremen, Andrew Zettel and Felix Schuhmaker, likewise dwelling in New Little Germany. Charles Zettel with free and unconstrained will, with full and right understanding ordained how his property after the death of Charles Zettel shall be divided and taken possession as:

    1) The whole land, with buildings thereon, to son, George Zettel for the sum of Twelve Hundred Dollars, "against which he has to receive on the said sum the third part as heir himself, and has thus the sum of Eight Hundred Dollars to pay to his two sisters, namely Anne and Mary Zettel without interest in the following terms.

    2) Since the land is leased for seven years, at which time son George reaches maturity, the bequest can only come into power when the lease runs out. "Hence, George has to step forward in this matter as proprietor."

    3) George Zettel has after expiration of the seven years, to pay the half of the inheritance, namely four hundred dollars in four yearly terms, to his sisters Ann and Mary Zettel.

    4) The other half, namely the other four-hundred dollars, George Zettel has to pay only after the demise of both the parents, namely at the time when G. Zettel has not to give anymore the Third from the land, payable likewise in four annual installments without interest to his aforesaid sisters, but if it should happen that both parents are demised before the first installments, then payment of the second half will only take place after the first one has run out.

    5) The single sister Mary has the right in the house in which George Zettel dwells, and this in a separate room which may be heated, which she can consider as her property, and in case the house be destroyed by fire or in some other way, then George Zettel is under all circumstances indebted for her to create a dwelling in a similar manner on this land, otherwise Mary Zettel has to lay no claim to anything in regard to provisions and nursing.

    6) George Zettel is to give as long as any one of the parents, as well as both are alive, the third of all the produce of the land, in summer all grain and grass, the half of the Veitchen Garden have likewise Charles Zettel and spouse to claim as property, 2 cows, 4 sheep, 4 geese, the third part of the hens eggs to receive likewise has the right to keep, besides yet two hogs, like the aforesaid two cows, four sheep, four geese, to keep on the land as well as in the summers in the pasturage like also their place for hay and the stabling. So also is George Zettel indebted to deliver to his parents annually ten cords of good hard firewood.

    7) What concerns sister Mary, she will by marrying become defunded in regard to the dwelling. As soon as Mary doth marry, she has nothing more to seek nor to claim.

    8) Further it is remarked that all the loose house furniture without exception are to be the property of Mrs. Gertrude Lobshuss, and nobody has to make any claim thereon.

    9) The threshing machine on hand must remain on the land after the demise of C. Zettel comes into inheritance, but George Zettel is to have it.
