Histand.-Magdalena, daughter of Aaron Biehn, was born Aug. 13, 1841; died Feb. 4, 1928; aged 86 y. 5 m. 22 d. She was married to George Histand on July 10, 1892. She was a quiet and devoted Christian for many years. Bro. C.F. Derstine preached on the theme, "When I am old." He was assisted by Bros. Oscar Burkholder and Moses Bowman. Services at the First Mennonite Church, Kitchener, Ontario, and interment in adjoining cemetery.

A-2-5 Abraham Biehn Be it known that on the 18^th December 1858, the Last Will and Testament of Abraham Biehn late of the Township of Waterloo, Yeoman, who died on or about the 3^rd day of December 1858 at the Township of Waterloo and who at the time of his death had a fixed place of abode at the Township of Waterloo, was proved and registered in the said surrogate Court…a true copy of which said Last Will and testament is hereunder written and that the administration...was granted to Aaron Biehn of the Township of Waterloo, Yeoman, David Shantz of the Township of Blenheim in the County of Oxford, Yeoman and Jacob Yost Shantz of the town of Berlin, Yeoman, the Executors named in said Will…

I, Abraham Biehm of the Township of Waterloo…do make and publish this my Last Will and Testament…first that all my just debts shall be paid by my hereinafter named Executors; Second I give and bequeath unto my beloved wife Varonica, two beds and bed sheaeds[sic] [sheets?] my twenty-four hour clock and case, my corner cupboard and all what is in it, my case of drawers and all what is in it, my stove and pipe, and all my books, one cow, one horse, and my lease wagon, and one set of harness all the household furniture that my beloved wife may want. Further it is my will and desire that my son Aaron shall keep my wife's cow with his own cows during the whole year. Also I give one hundred and fifty pounds of pork to my wife in each and every year during her lifetime and ten buchels of apels[sic] in each and every year. I also order and devise that my loving wife shall have my house, I now live in free of rent, and as much fire wood delivered in the wood house as she may want for her own use. Further I order and desire and it is my will that my son Aaron shall have my farm I now live on, Lot no.1 in the Biehn's Tract at four thousand dollars with all the implements thereon, in the manner following, that is to say; twelve hundred dollars shall remain in my farm during the lifetime of my beloved wife Varonica at six per cent interest yearly for the same to her in hand paid each and every year, and one thousand dollars my son Aaron or his heirs shall have out of the then remaining two thousand eight hundred dollars for to equalize him with the rest of my children, according to my family's book and the then remaining eighteen hundred dollars my son Aaron shall pay five hundred dollars each and every year to my hereinafter named Executors, besides the interest on the twelve hundred dollars until the eighteen hundred are fully paid. Further it is my desire that all moneys arising from and out of my property personal or freehold, shall always be equally divided each and every year share and share alike amongst all my children or there heirs (my formerly son in law Jacob Y. Shantz shall always be considered as if my daughter Barbara was yet living) Except four hundred dollars of my daughter Mary her share (now intermarried to Benjamin Martin) shall be received for her two children, namely Moses , Martin and Mary Ann Martin, each of them shall have two hundred dollars, of the last payments or distributions of my daught. Mary's share and be put on interest till they become the age of twenty one years. Further it my will and desire that one year after the death of my wife my son Aaron or his successors shall pay no more interest but shall pay five hundred dollars yearly till the whole amount of twelve hundred dollars are fully paid, then my hereinafter named Executors shall give him a sufficient title or Deed.
Further, my son Aaron shall have the five acre Cedar Swamp joining lands of Daniel Staufer being part of Lot No 6, Biehn's Tract, Waterloo, south east corner of said Lot which is to go with my farm. Further I order and it is my will that within one year after my decease, my hereinafter mentioned Executors shall appraise all my goods, chattels and household furniture of whatsoever kind or nature, and sell the same by Public sale to the best for my heirs, and do as above decided and I do hereby nominate constitute and appoint my son Aaron Biehn and my son in law David Shantz and my friend Jacob Y. Shantz Executors of this my Last Will and Testament…

"... On the 18th day of June, 1812, President Madison declared war against England. This placed the Pennsylvania people in a very trying position and as they could not be induced to take up arms, they were pressed into service as teamsters and were obliged to furnish their own horses. Ox-teams were employed when no horses were to be had. Those who were required to serve in this capacity were Christian Schneider Jr., Peter Erb, Joseph Eby, Samuel Eschelman, Benjamin Springer, Frederick Herner, Jacob Bock, Henry Pannebecker, John Scheirich, Henry Wismer, John Biehn, Adam Shupe and Wildfong.

In January, 1813, General Proctor defeated the Americans near Detroit, capturing General Wilkinson with 500 men. In September General Harrison having been joined by a fierce body of riflemen from Kentucky, advanced towards Detroit in such force that General Proctor crossed the Detroit River and retreated up the Thames. On being followed by the American Army of 3500 men, he made a stand at Moraviantown with 800 British and 500 Indians under Tecumseh. This warrior was killed, and Proctor retreated in great confusion to Burlington Heights in order to join the Niagara Army. A number of the Waterloo people were up at the battle on the Thames. These Waterloo boys acting as teamsters had taken shelter in a swamp near by while the battle was being fought. An officer of the British army, seeing that all was lost, gave them warning, said 'Boys, all is lost, clear out and make the best you can,' upon which some ran, while others unhitched their horses and rode off for their lives. Christian Schneider Jr., who carried the money-safe on his wagon, cleared out on his horses, leaving the wagon with all its contents behind. In this defeat old Adam Shupe was taken prisoner by the Americans. He was taken before General Harrison who, perceiving his innocent and harmless appearance, dismissed him and granted him permission to return to his Canadian home. He lost both his horses and wagon. Christian Schneider was away the greater part of the summer. On his first trip he had a two-horse team. After being home a few weeks he had to go again, this time with a four-horse team. During this war which lasted a little more than two years, quite a number of small battles were fought in the Niagara Peninsula and in the vicinity of Detroit. Quite a few of these Pennsylvania Dutch boys were pressed to serve as teamsters and exposed to all manner of danger, but strange to say, not one lost his life through the war.

On the 24th of December, 1814, peace was made between England and the United States, leaving each in exactly the same position as they had been before the war. After peace was restored the government of Canada fully compensated those teamsters for their losses during the war and for their valuable services. Christian Schneider Jr. was paid $5.00 a day for the time he served with a two-horse team, and $8.00 per day for a four-horse team, besides they were paid for horses and wagons that were lost during the time they served the government."

John Biehn " was a native of Switzerland where he was born in 1737. In 1742 his parents moved to America and settled in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, where he was raised. He was married to Barbara Fried who was born in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, in 1744. In 1800 they with their family of grown children moved to Canada and settled one mile west of Doon, Ontario, on the farm now in possession of Aaron S. Biehn, their great-grand-son. Here the old progenitor purchased a large tract of land still known as "Biehn's Tract." She died in 1807, aged 63 years, and he died in 1811, aged 74 years. .."

Isaac Shantz, "was born in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, January 14th, 1748. On May 4th, 1774, he was married to Barbara Reiff who was born September 12th, 1753. He died on his farm situated on the Schuylkill River, within the corporation of Pottstown, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania on October 11th, 1802. They had a family of nine children, eight of whom they raised. Their names are as follows: III Mary, III Abraham, III Christian, III Jacob, III Isaac, III David, III Veronica, III Samuel, and III Joseph. In 1808, she with her two sons, David and Isaac, and her daughter Veronica, moved to Canada and settled on the farm now possessed by Abraham H. Wambold, about one and one-half miles south of Berlin, and part of this farm is now possessed by Enos Shantz, one of her great-grandchildren. Here she resided until her death which took place September 25th, 1820. (Contributed by her son, Joseph) She was of an amiable disposition, rather small in statue but robust and of a quick turn. At 60 years of age she would mount her pony like a young man. She is buried in the Christian Eby Burial Ground, Berlin, Ontario. We shall now give the descendants of Isaac Shantz."

Jacob (Yoch) Schneider, "the seventh member of his father's family, was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, January 24th, 1764. In 1790 he was married to Mary, daughter of Christian and Mary (Scherch) Erb (No. 2777). She was born March 2nd, 1766 and died in Waterloo County, Ontario, near Bloomingdale, August 27th, 1835. In 1806 he, with his wife and family, his brother Christian and family, and others, moved to Canada and settled in Waterloo County. Old Yoch, as he was generally called, settled on the east bank of the Grand River, near Bloomingdale, on the farms now possessed by Benjamin S. Snyder, Josiah S. Snyder, and Rev. Menno B. Bowman where he was engaged in farming and acquiring real estate so as to be able to give a large farm to each one of his children. His family consisted of ten children and were all married save one, and resided within the same neighborhood. He died February 6th, 1853,."

Jacob Snider: The Last Will and Testament of Jacob Snider, late of the Township of Waterloo.

… I, Jacob Snider, Sr. of the Township of Waterloo, Yeoman, being of sound and perfect mind and memory…I give and bequeath to all my sons and daughters, share and share alike, all my freehold and personal property of what kind and nature soever, except my farm, Levi Bechtel now living on for which I hold the deed for which is Lot No. 69 in Waterloo aforesaid, the said Levi Bechtel is to have the benefit of the said Lot during his natural life, then the said lot is to fall to his children, and all the share and shares arising out of my property after my decease which falls to my daughter Magdalene, wife of Levi Bechtel and will remain for the heirs of daughter Magdalene, except for the yearly interest, which Levi Bechtel was to have during his natural life. Should my said daughter Magdalena die, and Levi marry again, he should still have the benefit of the farm, but not the interest of any money out of the estate. .Further, I order and desire and it is my Will that the share that falls to 'my' daughter Elizabeth Snider shall remain on interest during her life, for which interest my daughter Elizabeth Snider shall be kept during her life with good and sufficient meal and drink, washing and lodging and other things necessary for her comfortable support during her life, and after her death, her share is to be divided amongst the other sons and daughters, except Magdalene, wife of Levi Bechtel, who is to have the interest or he as long as he does not marry again, and after hid decease all shall fall his children the heirs of my daughter Magdalene, the Lot No. 69, which I hold the deed will be seen by the receipts after my decease aled also notes signed by Levi Bechtel as well as by others so that all my estate will be made equally share and share alike as before mentioned, always to save her share for her and her children only the benefit of the farm during his natural life and the interest of all moneys till he married again, then that is to be stopped for his first children…And I do nominate, constitute and appoint in full power, as my own person, my son Christian J. A-1-133 Christian Shantz Probate of the Will of Christian Shantz the elder, late of the Township of Woolwich, Yeoman, deceased, on the petition of Jacob Shantz of the Township of Waterloo, Yeoman, and David P[?] Shantz of the Township of Blenheim in the County of Oxford, Yeoman, the Executors named in said will….

…I, Christian Shantz Senr., of the Township of Waterloo, Yeoman…That all my just debts shall be paid. Second, I give and bequeath to each of my sons and daughters, share and share alike, and I do hereby nominate, constitute and appoint my two sons Jacob Shantz and David Shantz, my lawful Executors in full power, to give deed or deeds as I would do in my own proper person of this my last Will and Testament…

Died

In Woolwich, on the 7th April, Mr. Christian Shontz, aged 87 years. The deceased was born on the 11th day of July, 1769, in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. He was married to Miss Hannah Paul in the year 1791, and lived in this state 54 years, during which time he begat 12 children, 7 are yet alive; the number of his grand children is 82, of whom 73 are yet alive; the number of his great-grand children is 119, of whom 105 are still alive. The entire number of his progenitors is 213, of whom 185 are yet alive. The deceased emigrated to the Township of Waterloo in the year 1810, where he lived 47 years.
