BIEHN. - Aaron Biehn was born April 3, 1855 near the village of Doon, Waterloo Co., Ont.; died Nov. 8, 1935; aged 80 y. 7 m. 5 d. On Oct. 24, 1882, he was married to Mary Bowman of New Dundee, Ont., who passed away Sept. 24, 1924. In 1889 he was ordained a deacon of the Mennonite Church for the Strasburg, Ont., field of labor. He leaves 4 sons and 1 daughter (Clayton, Freeman, Leander, Aaron, and Mrs. Clemens Snyder). He is also survived by 21 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. In 1905 he moved with his family to Guernsey, Sask., where he took up land and resided until his death. He served as deacon in the Sharon Mennonite Church till death. He was well preserved and was in good health. He had spent the summer months in Ontario, attending the General Conference, and returned home soon after Conference. He left home the day of his death to visit at Bro. B.B. Weber's home. Soon after dinner he took a walk, walking about a mile and a half. He seemed none the worse for his walk, and about 5: 00 P. M. left Weber's to return home. No concern was felt at his non-arrival home that evening, it not being unusual for him to walk to homes in the neighborhood and at times to remain over night. About noon the next day inquiries were made as to his whereabouts, and as no one had seen the aged brother, a search was made and the body was discovered by Clemens Snyder about one-half mile from Bro. Biehn's home, 100 yards from the road as he had commenced a short cut across the field. The funeral was held Nov 12, with services at the home and at Sharon Mennonite Church, in charge of Bro. M. H. Schmitt and Bro. Burton Weber. Texts, II Tim. 4: 6 8; Jno. 16: 16. The body was laid to rest in the adjoining cemetery.

"Word was received today by Josiah H.Weber, 25 Pandora Avenue, city, of the death in Guernsey, Sask. of Aaron S. Biehn of that place. The later Mr. Biehn, whose death is attributied to heart failure, was a former resident of Strasburg. On a visit east, he renewed acquaintances in Kitchener and the immediate district this summer. He was 80 years of age. The funeral was held today."

"In 1905 about 30 members of the church moved into an area near Guernsey, Saskatchewan.They came from Waterloo County. Elis S. Hallman, a minister, and Aaron S. Biehn, a deacon, were in this group....Aaron S. Biehn was a deacon before he went west. It was in his tent on the plain that the first Mennonite service was held in this province. Because of his advancing years another deacon was appointed in 1933. Edwin Bowman, son of M. C. Bowman, of Kitchener, Ontario, is the one who was chosen to serve with Biehn."

Biehn. - Mary U. Bowman, beloved wife of Aaron S. Biehn, near Guernsey, Sask., passed away on Sept. 25, 1924; aged 61 y. 1 m. She was born in Waterloo Co., Ont., Aug. 26, 1863. On Oct. 24, 1882, she was married to Bro. Biehn. This union was blessed with 5 sons and 1 daughter. In the year 1905 they moved to Saskatchewan, where they resided till her demise. Five weeks before she died she was found to have a cancer of the stomach, and with much suffering yet with Christian fortitude she calmly awaited her end. Her sick chamber was a scene of inspiration to those privileged to visit with her, as she was rejoicing in the prospect of her coming glory. Valuable parting admonitions were given to her children. The services at the house were conducted by I. S. Rosenberger, and at the Sharon Mennonite Church by Henry Bartel in German and E. S. Hallman in English. Text, I Cor. 15: 51,52. The remains were laid to rest in the adjoining cemetery.

A-2-5 Abraham Biehn Be it known that on the 18^th December 1858, the Last Will and Testament of Abraham Biehn late of the Township of Waterloo, Yeoman, who died on or about the 3^rd day of December 1858 at the Township of Waterloo and who at the time of his death had a fixed place of abode at the Township of Waterloo, was proved and registered in the said surrogate Court…a true copy of which said Last Will and testament is hereunder written and that the administration...was granted to Aaron Biehn of the Township of Waterloo, Yeoman, David Shantz of the Township of Blenheim in the County of Oxford, Yeoman and Jacob Yost Shantz of the town of Berlin, Yeoman, the Executors named in said Will…

I, Abraham Biehm of the Township of Waterloo…do make and publish this my Last Will and Testament…first that all my just debts shall be paid by my hereinafter named Executors; Second I give and bequeath unto my beloved wife Varonica, two beds and bed sheaeds[sic] [sheets?] my twenty-four hour clock and case, my corner cupboard and all what is in it, my case of drawers and all what is in it, my stove and pipe, and all my books, one cow, one horse, and my lease wagon, and one set of harness all the household furniture that my beloved wife may want. Further it is my will and desire that my son Aaron shall keep my wife's cow with his own cows during the whole year. Also I give one hundred and fifty pounds of pork to my wife in each and every year during her lifetime and ten buchels of apels[sic] in each and every year. I also order and devise that my loving wife shall have my house, I now live in free of rent, and as much fire wood delivered in the wood house as she may want for her own use. Further I order and desire and it is my will that my son Aaron shall have my farm I now live on, Lot no.1 in the Biehn's Tract at four thousand dollars with all the implements thereon, in the manner following, that is to say; twelve hundred dollars shall remain in my farm during the lifetime of my beloved wife Varonica at six per cent interest yearly for the same to her in hand paid each and every year, and one thousand dollars my son Aaron or his heirs shall have out of the then remaining two thousand eight hundred dollars for to equalize him with the rest of my children, according to my family's book and the then remaining eighteen hundred dollars my son Aaron shall pay five hundred dollars each and every year to my hereinafter named Executors, besides the interest on the twelve hundred dollars until the eighteen hundred are fully paid. Further it is my desire that all moneys arising from and out of my property personal or freehold, shall always be equally divided each and every year share and share alike amongst all my children or there heirs (my formerly son in law Jacob Y. Shantz shall always be considered as if my daughter Barbara was yet living) Except four hundred dollars of my daughter Mary her share (now intermarried to Benjamin Martin) shall be received for her two children, namely Moses , Martin and Mary Ann Martin, each of them shall have two hundred dollars, of the last payments or distributions of my daught. Mary's share and be put on interest till they become the age of twenty one years. Further it my will and desire that one year after the death of my wife my son Aaron or his successors shall pay no more interest but shall pay five hundred dollars yearly till the whole amount of twelve hundred dollars are fully paid, then my hereinafter named Executors shall give him a sufficient title or Deed.
Further, my son Aaron shall have the five acre Cedar Swamp joining lands of Daniel Staufer being part of Lot No 6, Biehn's Tract, Waterloo, south east corner of said Lot which is to go with my farm. "... On the 18th day of June, 1812, President Madison declared war against England. This placed the Pennsylvania people in a very trying position and as they could not be induced to take up arms, they were pressed into service as teamsters and were obliged to furnish their own horses. Ox-teams were employed when no horses were to be had. Those who were required to serve in this capacity were Christian Schneider Jr., Peter Erb, Joseph Eby, Samuel Eschelman, Benjamin Springer, Frederick Herner, Jacob Bock, Henry Pannebecker, John Scheirich, Henry Wismer, John Biehn, Adam Shupe and Wildfong.

In January, 1813, General Proctor defeated the Americans near Detroit, capturing General Wilkinson with 500 men. In September General Harrison having been joined by a fierce body of riflemen from Kentucky, advanced towards Detroit in such force that General Proctor crossed the Detroit River and retreated up the Thames. On being followed by the American Army of 3500 men, he made a stand at Moraviantown with 800 British and 500 Indians under Tecumseh. This warrior was killed, and Proctor retreated in great confusion to Burlington Heights in order to join the Niagara Army. A number of the Waterloo people were up at the battle on the Thames. These Waterloo boys acting as teamsters had taken shelter in a swamp near by while the battle was being fought. An officer of the British army, seeing that all was lost, gave them warning, said 'Boys, all is lost, clear out and make the best you can,' upon which some ran, while others unhitched their horses and rode off for their lives. Christian Schneider Jr., who carried the money-safe on his wagon, cleared out on his horses, leaving the wagon with all its contents behind. In this defeat old Adam Shupe was taken prisoner by the Americans. He was taken before General Harrison who, perceiving his innocent and harmless appearance, dismissed him and granted him permission to return to his Canadian home. He lost both his horses and wagon. Christian Schneider was away the greater part of the summer. On his first trip he had a two-horse team. After being home a few weeks he had to go again, this time with a four-horse team. During this war which lasted a little more than two years, quite a number of small battles were fought in the Niagara Peninsula and in the vicinity of Detroit. Quite a few of these Pennsylvania Dutch boys were pressed to serve as teamsters and exposed to all manner of danger, but strange to say, not one lost his life through the war.

On the 24th of December, 1814, peace was made between England and the United States, leaving each in exactly the same position as they had been before the war. After peace was restored the government of Canada fully compensated those teamsters for their losses during the war and for their valuable services. Christian Schneider Jr. was paid $5.00 a day for the time he served with a two-horse team, and $8.00 per day for a four-horse team, besides they were paid for horses and wagons that were lost during the time they served the government."

Benjamin Baumann, "eldest son of Wendel and Maria (Huber) Baumann, was born in Berks County, Pennsylvania, February 15th, 1787. He was married to Susannah, daughter of Joseph and Magdalena (Allenbach) Bechtel. She was born in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, June 16th, 1797 and died September 19th, 1870. In spring of 1815 he came to Canada, prospecting the country. He found Waterloo to be a favorable county for the forming of settlements. In fall of the same year, he in company with Jonathan B. Baumann and John Brubacher (Deacon Johney), returned to Pennsylvania. In 1818 he, in company with Christian Burkholder and family, John Good and family, old Betty Baumann (wife of Peter Baumann), old Esther Cressman, Samuel Bechtel and others, came from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania to Waterloo County, Ontario Canada, making the journey in 28 days. On arriving here he settled on lot No. 54, German Company's Tract, township of Waterloo, about two miles south-east of Berlin, where he resided until his death. The farm is now owned by his son, Rev. Samuel Baumann. They had a family of nine children."

Susannah Bechtel "was born June 16th, 1797, and died September 19th, 1870. She was married to Benjamin Baumann who was born February 15th, 1787, and died December 7th, 1874. They resided about two miles south-east of Berlin where they both died. Their family consisted of nine children".

George Unger, "second son of Adam and Elizabeth (Koehner) Unger, was born in Warwick Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, in 1802, and came to Canada with his parents in 1812. He was married to Catherine Kraft. After their marriage they moved to Strasburg, Waterloo County, where they resided for many years. When old they moved to Normanby Township, Grey County, near Neustadt, where they died. He died August 18th, 1880. They had a family of eight children"
