WOMAN BURNED TO DEATH CHILD SERIOUSLY INJURED

Distressing Accident Results in the Death of Mrs. Henry Reinhardt and Injury to Granddaughter

As a result of a very distressing accident, which occurred at about 9 o'clock on Sunday morning, the death of Mr. Henry Reinhardt Ahrens street west, took place five hours later at the Berlin-Waterloo Hospital and little hopes are entertained for the infant granddaughter of the deceased who has since contracted pneumonia at the same institution.

Mrs., Reinhardt was lighting the gasoline stove at the time, when in a manner unknown her clothing caught fire. Almost instantaneously she was enveloped in a mass of flames and rushed out into the lawn. Her wild screams for help attracted her husband who was sitting out in the yard. And he immediately tore the clothing from her back and attempted to quench the flames by pouring water over her. In in doing so he was severely burned about the right arm which required medical attention.

In passing out of the kitchen it is thought that the. clothing of the granddaughter of the decease, little Marguerite Ferrier, aged fourteen months, ignited, and while Mrs. Reinhardt was being attended to in the yard, the little tot, huddled up in her high chair, was burning. The fire had caught the bottom of her long dress and eaten its way upward with the result that the limbs and face of the child were terribly scorched.

By this time, neighbors had come to their assistance, and Drs. H. H. Huehnergard and H. M. Lackner were summoned. The unfortunate woman and the child were rushed to the Berlin and Waterloo Hospital, were everything possible was done to ease the pain

Mrs. Reinhardt, though suffering agonizing pain, remained conscious to the last, and expired at two o'clock in the' afternoon, about five hours after she had bees admitted to the institution.

The late Mrs. Reinhardt was in her forty-ninth year, and is survived by her husband and three sons, Messrs. Gorge and Maurice of this town, Will of Sault Ste. Marie, and two daughters, Mrs. Will Ferrier and Florence at home.

The funeral was held on Wednesday morning at nine o'dock from the late residence on Ahren Street west to St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church and thence to the Roman Catholic cemetery for Interment.

One of Waterloo County's pioneer farmers was laid to rest at St. Agatha on Thursday morning in the person of Joseph Strub, who passed away at his residence. in the village of St. Clements on Monday. The funeral service it held 10 o'clock, at the Roman Catholic Church, interment taking place at the village cemetery. Rev. John Fehrenbach conducted the obsequies in the presence of many relatives and friends from the immediate vicinity and from Berlin and Waterloo, a community in which the aged and venerable tiller of the soil was well-known and highly respected. When as a boy he emigrated to Canada from Germany with his parents, their first home being in Waterloo: Later the father engaged in farming on a site half-a-mile east of St. Agatha. Joseph Strub subsequently engaged in teaching in Wilmot township and following the death of his father became one of the most successful farmers in that community. He was a thriving spirit in the public affairs of Wilmot's early days. In 1868 he commenced a seven-year term as municipal councillor and,.also the municipality's tax-collector for fourteen years. He was also a director of the Wilmot Agricultural Society and in 1875 was appointed a Justice of the Peace. For the past twenty years he had lived retired on the old homestead. His declining years he spent at:his late home in St. Clements.

Of a family of ten children, six survive. They are Peter, Berlin; David and Joseph, Hamilton; Henry, St. Agatha; Mrs. J. Hartman, Zurich and Mrs. F. Helm, St. Clements; all of whom were in attendance at the last sad rites. Joseph Strub.

About a half mile east of the village in the home of this venerable and well known citizen now retired to enjoy the fruits of long years of busy toil during which he also has experienced some of the rough side of life. He was born in Alsace, Germany, on August 22nd, 1829. When he was about three years. of age his parents emigrated to Canada, their first abiding place being in Waterloo where they remained a year. That town then only contained D? Snider's store and the mill, from the latter to Hoffman's factory being cedar thicket. The father came to the present site of the home of the subject of this sketch, then a partially unexplored wilderness,it 1833. Here he began a clearing, the first trees felled being used in building a cabin for his family.

The young people of pleasure today will probably think the truth incredible when the writer recounts some of the hardships endured by this worthy pioneer and his wife in their struggle for a home in the woods. The year previous to this the father had been working by the day for Jacob Bricker, the Burkholders and others in Waterloo. During the first year of their struggle for existence in their wilderness home they would rise at three and four o'clock in the morning and walk to Waterloo, put in an honest day's work and then return home in the evening to toil until near midnight among the burning log heaps of the clearing. Frequently during the sugar-making season the mother would take 30 or 40 pounds of sugar upon her head and walk to Waterloo where she would dispose of it for three cents a pound in trade. Such were the early experiences of these patrons of toil, of which there are a number of witnesses at present living in Waterloo. The father died Dec. 27. 1880, aged 77 years, 8 months and 14 days. The mother followed him on July 24, 1891, aged 88 years, 5 months and 14 days. They had only two children, Joseph the subject of this sketch and the late Mrs. Michael Hergott.

Joseph had his first experience for himself after leaving the family circle, as clerk in the store of one William Charlton, a Scotchman, of Waterloo He was then about sixteen years of age and remained about a year. After that he followed school teaching, his first school being at St. Agatha, then in Preston and latterly in Wellesley village. He was married in 1850 to Miss Frederica, daughter of the late Philip Fisher, of near Strasburg, this county. They had eleven children, two bring deceased They also experienced many hardships. After marriage Mr. Strub worked three or four years as a carperter, and then returned to the old home stead where he remained until the death of his father and where he now resides a retired life enjoying with bis wife the fruits of their many years of patient toil and hardships. Their son Eugene is working the farm. The residence is a commodious stone structure and was erected in 1850. The farm contains 108 acres and is a choice tract of land on the Erb's road about six miles west of Berlin.

Mr. Strub was elected a member of the Wilmot Township Council in 1868, which office be held for seven years. For fourteen years he was collector of the township. From both offices he retired with an honorable record. In 1875 he was appointed a Justice of the Peace, an office he still occupies. He was for six years a director of the Wilmot Township Agricultural Society. In his younger days he was a Tory, btt for the past twenty-three or four years he has staunchly espoused the principles of the Reform party. Having been identified with this section both as a farmer and in an official capacity he rests in peace and contentment with the congratulations of a wide circle of friends and acquaintances, forty-five grand-children and two great grand- children.

His amiable wife, who has been his constant helpmate in all his years of toil, was born in Baden, Germany, Oct 11, 1830.
