    Notes:

Mr. John S. Weichel, is one of the most energetic and enterprising business men of Elmira. He is partner and general manager of the constantly growing hardware business of M. Weichel & Son, Elmira and Waterloo. He attends strictly and promptly to business matters and may always be depended upon to do his part towards the welfare of the town. He has been a member of the Municipal Council, and is president of the Elmira Board of Trade.

Mr. Michael Weichel, has been a resident of Elmira since 1862. He came from Germany when 12 years of age. When 20 years of age he learned blacksmithing in Elmira. In 1868 he commenced a shop on his own account which he continued 12 years. In 1881 he bought the hardware business of Mr. Wachsmuth. He is a public spirited citizen and has done much towards the advancement of Elmira. He was the second Reeve of the Village of Elmira.

The Hardware Business of M. Weichel & Son has assumed large proportions. From a small beginning, it has grown to one of the largest enterprises of its kind in the County of Waterloo, comprising as it does, two large stores with immense stocks. From the beginning the firm has made it a practice to endeavor to please their customers and to supply them with anything they might want in hardware or kindred goods. They have constantly added new lines and are now handling apart from the ordinary class of hardware, coal, wood, binder twine, cement and other bulky goods. They have also a stove and tinware department in which they carry a heavy stock of stoves and furnaces of which they make a specialty. The tinsmithing department is under the management of a first-class experienced mechanic. In 1896 the firm started a store in Waterloo, on the same broad principles, which were responsible for their success in Elmira, with the result that they have now a very large and popular trade there.

Mr. Wm. G. Weichel is manager of the Waterloo store. Under his management the business, which comprises practically similar lines of goods as are kept in Elmira, is constantly increasing and gaining in favor. The large quantities of goods required by the firm, enables them to place their orders on the most advantageous terms.

    ________________

Weichel's Hdwe [hardware] those earlier days handled coal & wood. They had their sheds down by the C.N.R. and old Adam Weichel emptied many a coal car and also sang while doing it. The older Mike Weichel Sr was always the first one at the store at 7 a.m. and he was an elderly man then. John Weichel then took over with Oscar Ruppel. Then big (Mike Henry) came back from the west. After that Lefty took over as it stands today. Young Mike Oscar worked there awhile and then left for the first world war.

    _________________________

John S. Weichel, one of Elmira's prominent and well-known citizens, died early on Tuesday morning at the home of his son, Charles J. Weichel, Park St. Mr. Weichel had observed his 81st birthday on May 10, and had been in failing health for a short time. As one of the leading and oldest business men in this community, and a staunch and active member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, his passing will be keenly felt by all who knew him.

He was born in 1866 near Heidelberg, a son of the late Michael and Margaret Weichel, who moved to Elmira when he was about three months old. He received his education in this town, and after leaving school was employed as a bank clerk here. Later he became a partner in his father's hardware business, remaining with it for about 65 years. He retired from active work n the local store in December, 1945, and as president of the M. Weichel & Son Co. in April 1946.

His interests in activities in the town have covered a wide varied field, in business, and social and church life. Mr. Weichel was one of the leading promoters of the Great West Felt Company Limited, and remained a director until only a few years ago. He also played an active part in municipal affairs as a young man, and was a member of the town council in the years when the first sidewalks were built, and the waterworks were established. He was a former member and one time president of the Board of Trade.

Music was one of his favorite interests and he had been a loyal member of the Elmira Musical Society for more than fifty years, and played with the band for a long time. For twenty years the choir of the church to which he belonged benefited by the faithful and capable leadership of Mr. Weichel.

For the past twenty years, since the death of his wife, formerly Ida Ruppel, he had resided at the home of his son, Charles. He was popular with young and old, and an interesting talker, and enjoyed the visits made by his numerous friends, particularly during the past two years when he was unable to be out very much.

He leaves to mourn their loss, four sons, Charles, Oscar, Hilbert and Harry, and one daughter, Mrs. Fred (Marie) Forwell; all of Elmira: one brother William, Waterloo; two sisters, Mrs. Oscar (Clara) Ruppel and Mrs. Edith Heimbecker, both of Elmira; 11 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. One brother, Henry, died four years ago.

The body will rest at the Dreisinger Funeral Home until this Thursday afternoon at 2: 30, when a brief service will be held there, followed by services at St. Paul's Lutheran church at 3 o'clock conducted by Rev. F. P. Malinsky. Interment will be made in Elmira Cemetery.

Promment Citizen Succumbs To Complications Following Pneumonia Attack

    Offered Brave Struggle

Daughter Of Former Postmaster Here; Funeral To Be Held Sunday Afternoon

Fearlessly facing death with a true Christian heart, Ida E. Ruppel, beloved wife of John S. Weichel, prominent Elmira merchant, succumbed to complications following a severe attack of pneumonia two years ago, at her late home, 24 Park Street, this (Thursday) morning about 7 o'clock.

News of her death cast a pall of gloom over the community where she had lived all her life and to which she had endeared herself by her fine womanly qualities.

Death came peacefully. The heart which once had beaten so strongly in thoughtful consideration of others, fluttered, wavered and finally stopped as the spirit departed. Her passing ended an illness which started about eight years ago with an attack of influenza. She recovered somewhat but never regained her former strength and about two years ago was again forced to her bed by pneumonia. For the past year she had been very ill but about a month ago her condition became acute. Although fighting an unequal battle she bravely struggled, but gradually weakened.

    Bids Family Farewell

Believing that death was near she summoned the members of her family to her bedside on Sunday, and there bade them a fond farewell. Her mind appeared exceptionally active, her facilities unimpaired and her words on this occasion, again revealed the kindliness and thoughtfulness which so inspired her during her active lifetime.

She rallied somewhat Sunday, but lapsed into periods of unconsciousness, apparently the result of extreme weakness. At times during the week she rallied and a faint smile or movement of the hand indicated that she recognized those grouped around her bedside. On Wednesday the family gathered close as death again seemed imminent. Throughout the day and night close vigil was kept and early this morning death came.

    Daughter of Former P.M.

The late Mrs. Weichel who was in her 68th year, was the daughter of the late John and Mary Ruppel, the former of whom was postmaster here for many years. About 1890 she became the bride of John S. Weichel. A faithful member of St. Paul's Lutheran church, she formerly was actively identified with the various church organizations and her untimely death will mean a decided loss to the congregation.

In addition to her husband she is survived by one daughter, Marie; and four sons, Charles, Oscar, Hilbert and Harry, all of Elmira. One sister, Mrs. (Rev.) J. C. Borth, of Staten Island, N.Y., and six brothers also survive: Oscar, John H., and George, Elmira; Charles, Buffalo; Henry, Tavistock; and Otto, of Hamilton.
The funeral will take place on Sunday afternoon, at 2 o'clock, from her late residence to St. Paul's Lutheran church and thence to Elmira Cemetery for interment, with Rev. Messrs. Gallmeier and Rolph, officiating.
