    Silver Wedding - Gadshill, Nov. 12th, 1903

The home of Mr. John E. Ratz, in Gadshill, was the scene of a brilliant and happy gathering yesterday the occasion being the twenty-fifth anniversary of the marriage of that respected couple. The assemblage was in the nature of a surprise and most admirably it succeeded. Mr. and Mrs. Ratz were lured away from home for an hour or two and on their return they drove up to the house to find nearly one hundred of their relatives gathered on their porch to greet them. On entering they found the dinner tables spread and the magnificent display of presents neatly arranged. Among the visitors were all of Mr. Ratz' brothers and sisters, except one, while Mrs. Ratz' family were as also fully represented. Messrs. and Mesdames Ed. E. Ratz, John Hill, Otto, Louis and John Fleischhauer, of Wellesley village were among the number present. The silver wedding ceremony was performed by Rev. Mr. Edy. The wedding march being played by Miss Alma Kalbfleisch of Tavistock and then the large company gathered around the loaded tables, eight or ten nieces, dressed in white, acting as waitresses Then came the address of congratulation and affection, accompanied by the presentation of a splendid Berlin piano, a magnificent silver service, a marble clock, etc. Mr. Ratz replied to the address in a touching manner. An enjoyable program of vocal and instrumental music followed which was taken part in by the Misses McDougall, of Berlin, Messrs. Wettlaufer, of Stratford, and others. The day was most enjoyably spent and the gathering broke up at dusk, although some of the brothers and sisters who had come from Michigan and distant points in Ontario remained over for a day or two to continue their visit.

    Mrs. John Fleischhauer, Sr.

At Gadshill, on Saturday, May 21st, 1904, Anna Marie Jungblut, relict to the late John Fleischhauer, aged 81 years, two months and one day.

Mrs. Fleischhauer was one of the very oldest settlers of this section. She arrived from Germany with the family in 1837, when she was fourteen years old, settling near Berlin. In her early maidenhood she was married to Mr. John Fleischhauer, who died at Gadshill in 1891. The marriage occurred in the then hamlet of Waterloo, and the young couple lived west of that town, on the St. Agatha road for some years, when they moved to a farm in North Easthope, west of Hampstead. Here they lived for a long term of years, the children receiving their education in the Hampstead School. About fifteen years ago they retired to Gadshill. She was the mother of twelve children, ten boys and two girls: Christ J., in Reed City, Mich.; John J., Wellesley; George, Tavistock; Otto, Wellesley; Adam, in Bright; Henry, in Zurich; Louis, Wellesley; Fred, present address unknown; Jacob, Gadshill; Mrs. John E. Ratz, Gadshill; Andrew, died in childhood, and Mrs. Con. Faulhafer, of Gadshill. Besides she leaves as descendants 57 grandchildren, nearly all of whom were present at the funeral. The remains were interred at Gadshill on May 24th, the six eldest sons acting as pall bearers, Louis being substituted for Otto whose health did not permit him to act. Deceased was an earnest, warm-hearted woman and the upright character of her large family is a living testimonial of her worth.

    ___________________________

Valentine Ratz, the forebear of numerous millers, built a sawmill west of the village on the Conestoga River in 1844. Jacob C. Snider, in 1848, bought a farm on the south side of the Conestoga and after constructing a dam across the river, erected a saw-mill, a flour-mill, and a woollen-mill. Those industries attracted more mechanics and stores. In 1852 the village was named St. Jacobs after Mr. Snider. The "Saint" was added to his first name "for the sake of euphony." He sold the mills to his son Jacob in 1855. From 1856 until 1870 there were five different owners. In December of 1870 E. W. B. Snider purchased the flour-mill and operated it till 1917, when he sold the enterprise to W. W. Snider, who incor-porated the business as the Snider Flour Milling Company. The latter later sold the business to Walter J. Snider of Conestoga, whose heirs still operate it.
