    Emmanuel United Church

The first Evangelical missionaries arrived in the Waterloo area in 1837. The first Waterloo class (congregation) was formed on August 29, 1839 by Bishop John Seybert during a camp meeting at David Erb's farm near Lexington. Jacob Hoffman was the Waterloo-Lexington class leader; his brother, John, was class leader in Berlin. A brick building which was erected by Samuel Burkholder in 1849 on Church Street, near King, was offered to the congregation for their use as a church, rent free, provided that they agreed to finish and furnish the building. Dedication of the new church was in 1851. The house, known as Burkholder House, is still standing, but Church Street in Waterloo is now known as Central Street.

In the early 1890s Waterloo was in the North District of the Canada Conference of the Evangelical Association, and was ministered to jointly with Bridgeport. Pastors in those years were Revs. C.R. Knechtel (1890-1891), F. Meyer (1892), D. Kreh (1893), and W.J. Yaeger (1894).

A new church, which was built in 1871 at the corner of Cedar and Water Streets (now Bridgeport Road and Dorset Street), was replaced in 1905 by the present structure. Dedication was in May, 1906. Emmanuel Hall was built in 1938. Changes made in 1963 included an addition, a new front entrance and renovation of the former Christian Education area.

On November 16, 1946 the Evangelical Church joined with congregations of the United Brethren in Christ Church to form the Evangelical United Brethren Church. When the Evangelical United Brethren Church joined the United Church of Canada as of January 1, 1968, Emmanuel became a United Church..

    THE LATE S. BURKHOLDER

A Brief Biographical Sketch of a Former Well Known Resident of Waterloo Co.

Samuel Burkholder was born in Lancaster County Pa. on the second day of Jan. 1816, and died on the 12th day of Mar., 1893, at his home near Canada, Marion County, Kansas, aged 77 years 2 months and 10 days. He came with his parents to what is now the town of Waterloo in 1818, and was brought up on the farm directly one mile north of the Waterloo Mills, where in his rising boyhood he helped his father faithfully in clearing said farm. In the year 1837, then of age, he went to Southern Ohio, where he staid till 1840, and while there he learned the mason trade. He then returned to his old home in Waterloo, and at once began to work at his trade, which he followed about 33 years. So there are a goodly number of monuments of his mason work through the County of Waterloo.

Deceased was married twice, but with his first wife he did not live long, as he soon lost her by death. He then got married to his present surviving wife, with whom he has had six children, all sons, all grown up, married, and doing well. In 1873 deceased moved with his family to Marion County, Kansas, whereby he greatly improved his circumstances.

Deceased got about 15 months schooling in the old Waterloo log school house. He could read English and German fluently, and could write a fair legible hand in both languages. He was a man of more than common intelligence. He was a member of the Evangelical Church. His end was peace.

    Biography of William M. Burkholder

William M. Burkholder is one of the younger native Kansans filling places of responsibility and action and recently became proprietor and editor of the Anthony Bulletin. He had one of the older papers of Harper County. The Bulletin had enjoyed an independent existence since 1891, but is a continuation of several earlier papers. The old Harper County Enterprise was founded at Anthony in 1884, was consolidated in 1891 with the Alliance Bulletin of Harper, and was continued under the name Weekly Bulletin. The editor and publisher prior to Mr. Burkholder's ownership was R. P. McColloch. The Bulletin is independent in politics and had a circulation all over Harper and surrounding counties and also in Oklahoma. The offices and plant are on North Jennings Avenue.

William H. Burkholder was born at Tribune, Kansas, October 10, 1890, and represents a family that had been identified with this state for over forty years. He is descended from one of eight brothers who came out of Switzerland and founded homes in Pennsylvania in 1754. These brothers were early members of the Mennonite sect, and it was owing to religious persecution in Switzerland that they sought new homes and freedom of worship in America. The great-grandfather of William Burkholder in 1816 moved with a party of people of similar religious views to Ontario, Canada, and the colony founded there the Town of Waterloo in Waterloo County.

Samuel Burkholder, grandfather of the Kansas editor, was born in 1816 at Bowmansville in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and in the same year was taken by the family to Ontario. He became a prominent contractor in Canada but in 1873 brought his family to Marion County, Kansas. He was a man of considerable property and owned much land in Kansas. He died in Marion County in 1893. His wife was a Miss Reis, who was born in Wuertemberg, Germany, and died in Marion County, Kansas.

Samuel Burkholder, Jr., father of William M., is a prominent attorney at Marion, Kansas. He was born in Waterloo County, Ontario, May 28, 1859, and was fourteen years of age when he came with his parents and his five brothers to Marion County, Kansas. Two or three years later he went back to Canada and attended the Academy at St. Catherines in Ontario. While there he was a member of the military organization known as the Queen's Guards. In 1886 he graduated from Kansas University in the classical course, taught a year at Bethel College then situated at Halstead, now at Newton, Kansas, and was then admitted to the bar and had now been in active practice for thirty years. For a time he had a law practice in Greeley County, Kansas, and was the first county attorney there. In 1891 he again located at Marion, and had enjoyed a practice which ranks him among the successful lawyers of the state. As a republican he had filled the office of county attorney of Marion County three terms and had also been mayor of Marion. He is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, the Masonic fraternity in which he had attained the Royal Arch degree, the Beta Theta Pi college fraternity, and is a member of the County, State and American Bar associations. Samuel Burkholder married Florence Miesse, who was born in Fairfield County, Ohio, December 23, 1864. William M. is the oldest of their four children. Arthur L. is at the experimental station at Hays, Kansas, working for the Kansas Agricultural College, of which he is a graduate. Margaret Lucile is a graduate of the Marion High School and of the State Normal at Emporia, and is now teaching in Marion County. Lieutenant Edwin had been a student at Kansas University but is now enrolled in the Federal service as a lieutenant in the Third Kansas Regiment of the National Guard.

William M. Burkholder was educated in the public schools of Marion, graduating from the high school in 1908, and in 1913 took his A. B. degree from Kansas University. He is one of the most scholarly editors in Kansas and had made himself familiar with a broad range of subjects. In 1915-16 he was a special student of economics and history in Harvard University. Mr. Burkholder had had considerable experience in educational work, taught a year in the rural schools of Marion County, one year in the Beloit High School and one year in the Wichita High School. He became editor and publisher of the Anthony Bulletin on January 1, 1917. Mr. Burkholder is, like his paper, independent in politics, a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and is affiliated with the Masonic fraternity. He is unmarried.

    Historic Building:
The Burkhardt House was built in 1849 by Samuel Burkholder. Only after the walls of the one-and-a-half-storey structure had been completed did he reveal that he intended the structure to be used as a church. At the time, he proposed to the local Evangelical congregation that, if they would complete the building, he would grant them free use of it for divine worship. When the construction was completed and the interior had been furnished, the building became home to the congregation.
The gable above the entrance with its decorative barge board and the Gothic window was added at a later date, probably when the structure was converted to a residence in 1870. The six-over-six windows and the central doorway with transom and side lights are evidence that the house was originally built in the Georgian Style. Recently the building was repainted in colours sympathetic to the original. The replacement cedar shingle roof has helped restore the house to its original appearance.
All of the exterior elevations of the Burkhardt house are deemed to be of both historical and architectural significance.1a

However, the information you have on Ulrich from Ezra Eby's book is incorrect.
Ulrich was born in Switzerland in 1737. His parents were Ulrich and Barbara. Ulrich's widowed mother immigrated directly from Switzerland with her six children in 1754.

I am descended from Ulrich and Barbara's son Christian who was a well-known Mennonite Bishop in Lancaster County, Pa. Last year the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society published my article on Christian in their Pennsylvania Mennonite Heritage magazine (July 2011). A brief overview of the information and supporting documents for the change in the Burkholder story can be seen here

When my article was published very little was known on the children of (1737) Ulrich Burkholder. Based on my year of research, I now believe the correct order of the names and ages of Ulrich and Anna Burkholder's six children are: Elizabeth (b. 1765), John (b. ca. 1766), Peter (b. ca. 1768), Anna (b. ca. 1775), Mary (b. ca. 1780), and Christian (b. 1783, moved to Canada in 1818).
