Death of Mr. Morris Shellard, Sr., of Beverly

Today it falls to our lot to record the death of this well-known gentleman. For years now he has been an invalid, and has almost dropped from his place in life, but he bore his sufferings and weakness most patiently, and scarcely a word of querulousness passed his lips.

Mr. Shellard was born 16th October, 1809, in Wiltshire, England, and was consequently in his 80th year. He came to Canada in 1832, and entered the employment of Col. Brock Hill, who then owned considerable land in the Township of Woodhouse, Norfolk County, for whom he worked six years, in that time, by dint of industry and economy, saving enough to enable him to buy the land on the 9th concession, Beverly, which he subsequently made one of the best farms in the Township. This land, native, rough, with hardly a means of reaching it except on foot, he settled on in 1838, and from that time, in fair weather or foul, the sturdy form of our old friend could be seen wielding the axe, driving the oxen, or pursuing in some painstaking, industrious way, the course of subduing the wilderness, and bringing foot by foot, the rich land under cultivation. There he spent his days as a prominent farmer, his experience and advice respected, and his efforts always directed towards the improvement of the section in which he lived. He took little part in public matters of any description. He was married in 1838, to Miss Mercer, whose death in March last, we noticed. Of their family there are living, Morris and Thomas, of Beverly, Andrew, of California, Mrs. Cole, of St. Marys, Mrs. Gosman, of Blythe, and Mrs. J. H. Rutherford, of South Dumfries. Their daughter Mrs. Joseph Clouting, died some years ago.

Mr. Shellard will be buried in Mount View Cemetery, today (Friday) the funeral leaving the residence at 2 o'clock p.m.

    Parted at Last

Our obituary today records the death of Charlotte Lowd Mercer, wife of Mr. Morris Shellard, sr., of the 9th concession, Beverly. Mrs. Shellard was in her 78th year. She was born at Melross, Roxboroughshire, Scotland, in 1811, and came with her parents to Canada in 1833. In 1874 (note: 1874 error in obit) she was married, and in 1838 the young couple settled on the lot where they have ever since resided. For some years both Mr. and Mrs. Shellard have been invalids and Mr. Shellard, who still survives, is but a wreck of the stalwart, industrious settler, who in the early days of Beverly shouldered his axe after a day's chopping and walked home while the woods around him rang with the loud howls of the wolves.

The aged couple leave a family consisting of three sons and three daughters, viz.: - Mr. Andrew Shellard, who has been a resident of California for the past twenty years; Mr. Thomas Shellard, of Beverly; and Mr. Morris Shellard, residing on the homestead. Of their daughters, three are living, viz.: - Mrs. J. H. Rutherford, of North Dumfries; Mrs. Henry Cole, of Seaforth; and Mrs. John Gosman, of Blythe, Huron.

    Notes:

On Christmas and New Year's, and sometimes both, Galt seldom failed to have its shooting matches for turkeys and geese. The sportsmen sometimes shot through between the stumps in rear of the little tavern on Water Street, but more frequently west of the Queen's Arms, the birds or the target being placed at the foot of Dickson's hill. It was not uncommon, then, to shoot at the turkeys and geese themselves. On some occasions the birds were entirely exposed to the marksman, sit a long range; at other times their bodies were placed behind a stump or log, or in such a way that only their necks and heads were exposed above the snow, and it required a skilful marksman with the rifle to hit them. These matches excited the liveliest interest*

    * Among the best rifle shots at these matches were, John Garrison , Andrew Mercer, Absalom Shade, Thomas G. Chapman, James Fargus, Adam Hood, and James Kay.
