Mr. Peter Musselman, The former was one of the pioneers of this part of the county, and by industry and thrift he succeeded in hewing out of the wilds a good home for his old age. His death took place last Thursday and on Sunday his remains were laid to rest in Martin's cemetery, to which nearly 60 rigs followed, and where many more were waiting who could not cross the Grand river from the east. Needless to say he was a staunch Reformer and a true follower of that religious denomination the Old Mennonites. He leave an aged widow, 8 children and a number of brothers and sisters to mourn his departure. He reached the age of nearly fourscore years.

    PETER M MUSSELMAN.

This venerable citizen, who was born October 7tb, 1825, is the second offspring of the late David Musselman, who was the first white man to cross the Conestogo river to the north in this section. He was a native of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and came to the banks of the Conestogo in 1819, on the farm where Mr. David Koch now resides. He died October 25, 1870, in the 81st year of his age. The mother was the daughter of Peter and Anna Martin. She was born in Lancaster County, Pa., August 29, 1803, and died July 31st, 1872. They had thirteen children.

The subject of this sketch was born October 7, 1825, and was joined in matrimony to Miss Elizabeth, daughter of Christian and Magdalena Snider, in 1847. The latter was born April 2, 1829. Ever since they were married they have been residing where they now live, and are the parents of eleven children. Mr. Musselman's farm is part of the old tract first purchased by his father and contains 232 acres, being lot 42 Here he settled in 1847, and where he and his wife have incessantly labored until a few years ago they rested from their labors to enjoy the fruits thereof in the latter years of their lives. Mr. Musselman is now in his seventy-third year, and while, on account of rheumatic affliction, he is debarred from performing heavy labor, can walk all over his farm without experiencing much fatigue. Like many others of his class he has experienced the rough side of life as well as the smooth.

    THE OLD SCHOOLHOUSE

An interesting meeting took place the Saturday before last in the old log cabin in Waterloo Park.

This house was, of course, the first schoolhouse in this area and stood originally on the school-house square at the corner of King and Church Streets in Waterloo. It was built in 1820 and served its purpose until 1842, when it was torn down and a 1-storey stone house was constructed on the site. The dismantled log house was erected again in Greenbush and served as a residence for a long time for the coloured man, Mr. Carroll and his family. In the course of this year, the Waterloo Park Commissioners purchased the house, moved it to their park and furnished it again as it was when it was a school-house.

At this gathering, in addition to many other ladies and gentlemen, the following (male and female) former pupils attended, took their places on the benches, and were called to order by the 82-year-old teacher, Benjamin Burkholder, who held the scepter, or rather, the switch, from 1831 to 1842 in the old log-house: Joel Guth, 80 years old; Abraham Scherk, Blair, 79; Jakob Bricker, Waterloo, 77; Sarah Burkholder, nee Erb, Bridgeport, 75; Amos Weber, Berlin, 73; John C, Bricker, Hawksville, 71; Maria Erb, nee Quickfall, Norwich 69; David B. Eby, Waterloo, 69; Wendel Baumann, Woolwich, 68; Henry Stauffer, Erbsville, 67; Simon Beatty, Elmira, 67; Jakob Ratz, New Hamburg, 67; Israel Baumann, Berlin, 65; George Elbert, Moorefield, 63; George H. Baumann, Elmira, 63; John Devitt, Waterloo, 62; Richard Quickfall, Bridgeport, 62; Isaak Hoffmann, Waterloo, 61; Robert Barkwell, Peel, 60; Diana McMahon, nee Dekay, Berlin, 60; Thomas Quickfall, Floradale, 60; Benjamin Devitt, Waterloo, 60; Isaak Devitt, Floradale, 58; John Longmann, Peel, 57. In addition, to these, the teacher read the names of 25 pupils from the roll; they were, however, absent.

Mr. Burkholder gave an interesting talk about the history of the old school-house, and after him, Rev. J.A. MacLachlan, Rev. J. McNair, Mr. J.E. Baumann, M.P., and Mr. Jakob Ratz spoke about the old days which brought many things out of the past to mind again. School was, as a rule, only in session in winter and the costs were borne by the parents of the children. There were few subjects taught, namely: Reading, Writing and Sums. The children heard little about language, and geography; no child had more than 2 or 3 books. The predominant language was German. The pupils learned to read and write English, but didn't understand a word of it. Among the teachers in the old school-house from 1820-1842, with the exception of Mr. Burkholder, were the following whose names are still recognized: Jephtha DeKay, Joseph Guth, John Herringer, Peter Otto, John Dobbin, Elias Eby, Robert Barber, & Joseph Eby.

After those present, on hearing the various speeches felt themselves transported back to the past, the school was closed at four o'clock and the pupils were gathered together in front of the school and photographed as a group. On their return into the school, they found it had been transformed into a dining room with heavily-laden tables, which the old-timers thoroughly enjoyed. After everyone had chatted cordially for a while longer, the gathering broke up. The company will not meet again in complete numbers, nor in such a way.

    Notes:

(Reverend) Joseph joined the Evangelical movement in this area, so the records show, and was much influenced by it's preachers. He was so well liked and determined to succeed that when the Waterloo District was formed, Joseph was recommended and accepted to preach in this area, even though he was not ordained to do so. This was done at a later date. He was looked upon as a great leader in the community. He received his appointment to preach in 1854. He preached in New Hamburg in 1857, 1858-1895, 1896. and I understand at some of the other evangelical churches around this area such as Waterloo and Hespeler. Some records in Waterloo Historical Society books. vol #5 vol #6

A local Evangelical church was dedicated in 1851, Joseph was its minister. from Zion Evangeliacal (United) church 100th anniversary book. page 48-Joseph Umbach and Simon L Umbach mentioned. Joseph as District Superintendant. Ministers in this age were only permitted to serve for two years and so had to move to different churches periodically to maintain their profession. Hence both Joseph and Simon served many places in this area. page 55 mentions corner stone laying for Zion church building on Weber St. (present site) near Queen St. Joseph Umbach supervising.

Joseph born Munchzell in Baden Germany. His father Johann was born Grossgartig, Wurrtemburg Germany, and was a laborer and as a young man moved to Baden. He lived there with his parents until the family moved to America. Joseph was the second oldest and his mother's darling. The father was away from home a lot and so the training was left to the mother. The children had to learn to work early to help their mother with the farm. The father was Evangelical and the mother was catholic, a very pious person, so the children received a very strong christian upbringing. Joseph attended a rural school and shortly before they came to America he was confirmed. Relatives in Canada had been writing to them and so they came to Canada in sept 1843, having left Germany in June.

(Laschinger) The grandmother had died and grandpa was living in a small log house with his family, in a rural area with no neighbors, no school, or church. Joseph received no further schooling and hard work made him strong. The father bought a small farm near Conestoga but traded it for a tract of woodland 11 miles away in Woolwich twshp. there Joseph helped father build a house. The nearest neighbor lived 3 miles away and Joseph still could get no more education. The Umbachs were warned not to attend nearby chuch meetings in Berlin, but went anyways, with the result that his mother (Katherine) joined. Johann was furious and tried to stop things but after attending a meeting in St. Jacobs, joined himself.

Joseph at 18 was well on the way to becoming a preacher and his mother who was getting fed up with having so many preachers around, put her foot down on having home meetings and so Joseph left. The Michael Menger family built a house and the meetings were held there. After Josephs mother became more reasonable he returned home, and the religious group took him in. Later he was elected an officer of the church. (Elder). In 1853 he proved his ability as a preacher to a congregaion in Waterloo, under Rev. F. Herlan, where many people joined. Next was New Hamburg, for two years, with the same results. In 1859 he attended a church conference in New York, (400 miles with horse and wagon) with his wife and two children. It was very hard on them. He was rejected by the conference because he was Canadian. Two years later he went to the Utica mission as area head. In 1863 he was in Buffalo. In 1864 he returned to Niagara Falls for two years. In 1866 he was elected president of the district and held had post for 29 yrs. till poor health forced him tor esign that post.

For 4 yrs. he had a helper then spent a yr. as a helper, and then hiscareer as a minister was over. He suffered for 10 yrs., had many operations, but never fully regained his health.

He had a happy family life, though many trials. He had 12 children, 3 died in infancy. The death of his wife in 1906 was very hard for him and he stayed with his oldest daughter till he died in 1911. Rev. W. J. Wager conducted the funeral and 22 ministers lead the procession. The church could not hold all the people who came to pay their respects. Surviving were- Johanna-to Herman Uppel Levi-Professor North Western college-Naperville-Illinois U. S. A.
