    Arthur Todd Passes

    One of Ayr's prominent and successful businessmen for many years, W.E. Arthur Todd passed away at his residence Piper Street, Ayr on Friday June 1st. He was in his 75th year. Born in Hamilton, Mr. Todd came to Ayr in 1945. He was a mechanical engineer by trade. In September, 1949 he purchased the grocery store on Stanley Street which the Todd family operated successfully until March, 1972, at which time Mr. Todd retired and the store was sold. Over the years Mr. Todd carried out extensive building improvements and additions at the store. A veteran, Mr. Todd served overseas as a hydrophone operator on a Royal Navy minesweeper during World War I. After leaving the Navy he worked for many years at Frost Steel and Wire, Hamilton as a mechanical engineer. Mr. Todd was a member of Christ Anglican Church, Ayr; the Naval Association in Hamilton; and Corinthian Masonic Lodge, Hamilton since 1921. Married to the former Hilda Grace Tucker, the couple celebrated their 50th anniversary in August, 1972. Surviving besides his wife are a son, Arthur Robert Todd and a daughter, Mrs. John (Dorothy Grace) Bechtel, both of Ayr; a sister, Mrs. Arthur (Edna) Eyring of Cleveland, Ohio; also five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Private service and interment at Ayr Cemetery.

    Mrs. Arthur Todd

    Mrs. Arthur Todd of Piper Street, Ayr, passed away at St. Mary's Hospital, Kitchener, on Thursday, April 14th. She was in her 84th year. The former Hilda Grace Tucker, she was born in Hamilton, a daughter of the late Thomas and Emma Tucker. In 1945, Mrs. Todd, her husband W. E. Arthur Todd and family moved to Ayr. On September 1, 1949 the Todds established Todd's IGA food store which they operated until March 1, 1972 in the Stanley Street building now occupied by the Homespun Shop. Mrs. Todd was a member of Christ Anglican Church, Ayr, and Ayr Senior Citizens. Beloved wife of the late W. E. Arthur Todd (June 1, 1973). Dear mother of Arthur Robert Todd and Dorothy Grace (Mrs. John Bechtel), both of Ayr; dear sister of R. N. Tucker of Oakvine and Gladys Squires of California. Survived also by five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Rested at the Gilbert Macintyre & Son Funeral Home, Guelph. Private service. Interment Ayr cemetery.
