    MR. DOUGLAS DEATH

Heart-Failure the Cause of his Sudden Taking-off

One by one the pioneers of Galt district are passing from our midst. The large number of deaths of old residents of late years, has been remarkable. This week it is our sad duty to record the death of Mr. Wm. Douglas, George St. Mr. Douglas went into the store of Mr. Jesse Welland on Saturday evening and on entering said, "Maun Jesse !, I have an awful pain in my breast, let me sit down awhile." Mr. Welland hastened to furnish him with a chair and asked him if he could do anything for him. Mr. Douglas reply being "Oh, no; the pain will go away as soon as I get rested." A little later Mr. Welland asked him if the pain was gone and he replied, "No; but I maun be going, as Janet and Teenie will be waiting on me." He then bade Mr. Welland good-night and went home. Twenty minutes later he was dead, the cause of death being heart failure. The deceased gentleman was a member of the Central Presbyterian church and on of our most respected citizens. He had always enjoyed the best of health, and his son states, that he never remembers his father having a doctor. Had he lived he would have been 86 years old in July. He came to Canada from Northumberland, Eng., in 1837, the year of the Rebellion, his brother David, who was killed on the C. P. R. a few years ago, having preceeded him here by two years. He was accompanied by his brother, John, father of T. C. and John Douglas; Thomas, who at one time kept the Albion hotel and later lived in Preston and Stratford, where he died; James, who died about 20 years ago and Mrs. John Henry, of Bright, also dead and settled on the farm originally located by Alex. Fairbairn, in North Dumfries, which he owned at the time of his death and which is occupied by his grandson, W. J. Douglas. About the year 1842, he was married to Miss Margaret Shaw from Clachmannanshire, Scotland and had a family of three, James E. Douglas, of Dumfries; Janet, now Mrs. Geo. Thompson, Bright and William, who died 14 years ago. His first wife died 34 years ago and he was married again, 9 years later, to Mrs. Drummond, of Galt. Fortunately his daughter, Mrs. Thompson, arrived a few days ago on a visit and was here at the time of his death. The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon, to Mount View cemetery and was largely attended.
