Waterloo Foundry, Bricker & Co., King Street, Waterloo - Was established by Mr. Jacob Bricker, father of the present senior member of the firm. It was started in a comparatively small way, and it required untiring exertions and a lively spirit of enterprise to build it up to important proportions; but those qualities were not wanting, as the result achieved testified. The business is now conducted by Messrs. Levi Bricker and E.W.B. Snider, under the firm title of Bricker & Co. The 38 years that have passed since the founding of the business have seen many extensions in the buildings to accommodate the increasing trade, until to-day their extent is as follows: Main building, 45x100 feet in dimensions and two stories in height; moulding shop and engine room, 50x80 feet, one story; blacksmiths' shop, 30x40 feet, one story; paint shop, 30x50 feet, one story frame; and implement shed, 34x100 feet, one story frame. In these employment is furnished to 40 skilled and competent workmen. The firm manufactures a general line of agricultural implements, including reapers, mowers, binders, threshers and hay binders, besides general job work and repairing. The work turned out at this foundry is of the very best description, superior in quality and perfect in finish, which has been the main cause in building up and retaining their extensive trade. The annual output of the concern is over $40,000. Both members of the firm are natives of Canada; Mr. Bricker, the senior member, being the practical man and supervising the work, while Mr. Snider attends to the financial and business affairs, the latter gentleman being a representative of the North Riding of Waterloo in the Local House. The industry they conduct is alike creditable to themselves and the town of Waterloo.

The Late Levi Bricker

Death summoned one of Waterloo's oldest, most widely known and highly respected citizens at 2.30 o'clock Monday morning in the person of Mr. Levi Bricker, aged 83 years following a short illness of pneumonia. Deceased had enjoyed excellent health for many years and his passing was learned with deep regret by his large circle of friends.

The funeral took place from the late residence on Allen St. on Thurs day afternoon, February 26th and was largely attended by sorrowing friends and relatives. A simple but impressive service was conducted at the home by Rev. D. A. McKeracher. Interment was made in Mount Hope cemetery. The casket was banked with beautiful flowers comprising wreaths and sprays sent by friends of the deceased.

The late Mr. Bricker was one or a family of twelve children of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Bricker and was born in Waterloo. He took a keen interest in bowling being a member of the veteran rink of lawn bowlers comprising. Levi Bricker, Wm. Hogg. James Thompson and Dr. Sterling the latter alone surviving. When a young man, he, with his brother Jacob, took over the business of their father and continued the manufacture of farm implements. Later his brother withdrew and the late E. W. B. Snider became a partner of the firm which was known for some years as L. Bricker and Co. In the year 1888 a company was formed headed by the late E. W. B. Snider, exM.P.P.. under the name of the Waterloo
Manufacturing Co. Mr. Bricker retained his interest in the new firm and was an active member until a few years ago. For some years he was a member of the sales staff and widely known throughout the county.

He was an active member of the St. Paul's Presbyterian Church since the church was built 30 years ago being a member of the Board of Management.

A family of four children survive namely, Stella (Mrs. Lincoln Goldie). wife of Hon. L. Goldie, M.P.P., provincial secretary of Ontario, Irene (Mrs. R. F. Ogilvie) of Hamilton, Albert E. Bricker of Rochester and Irvin Bricker of Vancouver, B.C. His wife predeceased him some years ago and a sister Mrs. Magdelena Clemens of Kitchener passed away only twelve hours prior, to Mr Bricker. He is also survived by two sisters. Mrs. J. P. Seybold., Montreal, and Miss Angelina Bricker and two brothers. Oliver Bricker of Essex and Jacob of Rochester.

MRS. LEVI BRICKER PASSES AWAY IN HER 68TH YEAR

Mrs. Levi Bricker, a lifelong resident of Waterloo and a highly respected citizen passed away on Thursday afternoon at 3.30 o'clock after a month's illness. Although she had been confined to her bed for the past week, death came unepectedly.

The late Mrs. Bricker, who was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Hartman Schnarr was born in Waterloo Oct. 16th, 1850. In 1870 she was married to Mr. Levi Bricker who survives together with four children, viz: Mrs. Lincoln Goldie, Guelph; Albert E., Rochester, N.Y., Mrs. R. F Ogilvy, Hamilton, and Irvin E.. Vancouver, B.C., She also leaves seven grandchildren.

The late Mrs. Bricker was for many years an active member of the Presbyterian Church.

A wide circle of friends will learn with sincere regret of the death of Mrs. Bricker, who enjoyed in large measure the warm regard of her friends.

The family will have the deep sympathy of a large acquaintanceship in the hour of their bereavement.

The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon at three o'clock from the residence to the Mount Hope Cemetery.

THE OLD SCHOOLHOUSE

An interesting meeting took place the Saturday before last in the old log cabin in Waterloo Park.

This house was, of course, the first schoolhouse in this area and stood originally on the school-house square at the corner of King and Church Streets in Waterloo. It was built in 1820 and served its purpose until 1842, when it was torn down and a 1-storey stone house was constructed on the site. The dismantled log house was erected again in Greenbush and served as a residence for a long time for the coloured man, Mr. Carroll and his family. In the course of this year, the Waterloo Park Commissioners purchased the house, moved it to their park and furnished it again as it was when it was a school-house.

At this gathering, in addition to many other ladies and gentlemen, the following (male and female) former pupils attended, took their places on the benches, and were called to order by the 82-year-old teacher, Benjamin Burkholder, who held the scepter, or rather, the switch, from 1831 to 1842 in the old log-house: Joel Guth, 80 years old; Abraham Scherk, Blair, 79; Jakob Bricker, Waterloo, 77; Sarah Burkholder, nee Erb, Bridgeport, 75; Amos Weber, Berlin, 73; John C, Bricker, Hawksville, 71; Maria Erb, nee Quickfall, Norwich 69; David B. Mr. Burkholder gave an interesting talk about the history of the old school-house, and after him, Rev. J.A. MacLachlan, Rev. J. McNair, Mr. J.E. Baumann, M.P., and Mr. Jakob Ratz spoke about the old days which brought many things out of the past to mind again. School was, as a rule, only in session in winter and the costs were borne by the parents of the children. There were few subjects taught, namely: Reading, Writing and Sums. The children heard little about language, and geography; no child had more than 2 or 3 books. The predominant language was German. The pupils learned to read and write English, but didn't understand a word of it. Among the teachers in the old school-house from 1820-1842, with the exception of Mr. Burkholder, were the following whose names are still recognized: Jephtha DeKay, Joseph Guth, John Herringer, Peter Otto, John Dobbin, Elias Eby, Robert Barber, & Joseph Eby.

After those present, on hearing the various speeches felt themselves transported back to the past, the school was closed at four o'clock and the pupils were gathered together in front of the school and photographed as a group. On their return into the school, they found it had been transformed into a dining room with heavily-laden tables, which the old-timers thoroughly enjoyed. After everyone had chatted cordially for a while longer, the gathering broke up. The company will not meet again in complete numbers, nor in such a way.

Bricker. On the 12th of Feb., in Waterloo, Waterloo Co., _______, wife of Jacob Bricker. On the evening of the 7th, as she was about to retire, she went without a light, into another room, from which there was also a door leading into the cellar. In returning, she came to the cellar-door and fell through into the cellar, where she was taken up insensible, and died from the effects of the fall, aged about 63 years. She was buried in the Waterloo Cemetery, followed to her last resting place by many friends and relatives.

Peter Bricker," the eldest son of John and Anna ( Erb) Bricker, was born in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, November 26th, 1793. In 1802 he came to Canada with his parents who settled near the present village of Blair. He was married to Elizabeth, daughter of Simon Cress, who settled in this county in 1806. She was born February 17th, 1792, and died November 14th, 1854. He died January 25th, 1856. After their marriage they moved on the farm known as young "Daniel Snyder's" farm, within the corporation of the town of Waterloo, now possessed by the descendants of John E. Brubacher. Here they resided for twenty-five years when they moved south of "Huron Road," Wilmot Township, where they resided for two or three years, then they purchased the beautiful farm situated on the township line between Wellesley and Woolwich, now in possession of their son, John. Here they resided until their death which took place as stated above. They had a family of six children"
