    Notes:

    Keep Golden Wedding Day
Violinist and Pianist Are Married 50 Years

Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bossenberry Were Married in Zurich in 1889

A citizen, who has carried off the highest awards in all but one of the dozens of old-time violin contests he has entered and his wife, also a musician with a unique record of having taught music continously for the past 54 years, will observe their golden wedding anniversary on Tuesday.

Those talented musicians are Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bossenberry, Mitchell Avenue. Althought they didn't say so when interviewed at their home this week, it is safe to predict that piano-violin duets by the bride and bridegroom will be features of the golden wedding festivities next week.

    Old Favourites

It is possible that Mr. Bossenberry will play "Miller's Reel", "Social Sixty", "Our Govenor March" and some of the other old favourite selections which he carried off no fewer thatn three medals, and scores of first prizes in fiddling contests in Toronto, Grand Bend, Cooksville, Orangeville, Meaford, Cookstown and other places.

At her golden wedding party Mrs. Bossenberry may reminise, as she did for the Record yesterday, about the fine art of teaching three generations of little folks the notes of "Mary's Pet Waltz".

When Mrs. Bossenberry first began to teach music it was her custom to travel from the farm hom of her parents by horse and buggy or horse and cutter, to the station of Zurich, and thense by train to London to take lessons from Professor Mears, a well known musical authority of that period.

    Pupils the Same

Now the journey from Zurich which took her several hours, could be covered by automobile in a much shorter time, or by aeroplane in"no time at all." But although times have changed since 1885 there is little difference between the attitudes of music pupils of that period and music pupils of today.

Always there have been some pupils, according to Mrs. Bossenberry, who have the love for music, and who will learn to play whether or no. Always there have been some to whom practising seems like punishment, and who will never be performers. Whatever the attitudes of her pupils - and she has had classes of 60 and over - Mrs. Bossenberry confesses she has always loved her work, and hopes to continue teaching the pecularities of the trebel and bass clefs for many years to come.

    Natives of Huron

Prior to her marriage Mrs. Bossenberry was Miss Louisa Wagner, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Conrad Wagner, who resided in Huron County, 2 1/2 miles from Zurich. Mr. Bossenberry, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Bossenberry was also a native of Huron. It is of interest that Mr. Bossenberry's father was one of the early schol teachers in the "Green Bush" when Kitchener was still Berlin. It is also of interest that later in life Mr. Bossenberry was an auctioneer and frequently used three langusages of English, French and German, each of which he was able to speak fluently.

Since the golden bridegroom of next week is also a piano tuner and the golden bride a music teacher their romance probably developed before a pianoforte. Information on this point was not revealed to The Record, but the fact remaings that however their meeting came about they were married at the Evangelical parsonage at Zurich on July 18, 1889. Rev. Theo Hauch, father of Rev. J.P. Hauch, a former pastor of Zion Evangelical church of this city, performed the ceremony.

    Move to Kitchener

After their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Bossenberry resided in Zurich until April, 31 years ago, when they moved to Kitchener.
Both retained their interest in music through the years and in it found their chief hobby although Mrs. Bossenberry has a second special interest. Throughout her life she has been interested in Sunday school work, and for the past 25 years has been the capable teacher of a Sunday school class at Zion Evangelical Bible School.

Mr. and Mrs. Bossenberry had a family of 10 children of whom all but Franklyn who was drowned in the Breslau dam 17 years ago, are still living. Their family circle also included their grandchildren.

Their children are Mrs. I. Snider, Mr. Charles Bossenberry and Mr. Glen Bossenberry all of this city; Messrs. Clayton and Claude Bossenberry of Detroit; Bert of a Detroit-Buffalo Boat Staff; Emerson at Listowel; Mrs. J.L. Vanderwall of Toronto, and Mrs. J. Keiswater of Wiarton.

It is of interest that all of the members of this family have inherited musical tastes from their parents, Mr. Claude Bossenberry, a vocal teacher in Detroit studied voice culture in Italy for some time; Mr. Burt Bossenberry plays several instruments in the orchestra on the Detroit-Buffalo boat of which he is a staff member and Mr. Charles Bossenberry of this city is a member of both the Kitchener and Waterloo bands.

The anniversary festivities will continue for two days. On Monday evening Mr. and Mrs. Bossenberry are entertining their children and brothers and siters at a dinner party at the Olde Mill Coffee Shoppe. Among the guests invited to the dinner are Mrs. Bossenberry's brothers, Mr. John Wagner of Guelph and Mr. William Wagner of Zurich and their wives ahd her sisters Mrs. Charles Simpson, Guelph and Mrs. James McClimate, Kippen and their husbands; and Mr. Bossenbrry's sisters, Mrs. Frank Smith of Kitchener and her husband, his brother, Mr. Charles Bossenberry of Vancouver and his wife, his neice Mrs. Alma Willis of Toronto and his nephews Messrs. Bruce Bossenberry, Grand Bend and Milton Bossenberry, Sarnia.

On Tuesday Mr. and Mrs, Bossenberry will be "at home" to thier friends at their residence, Mitchell avenue, in the afternoon from 2: 30 to 5 o'clock and in the evening from 7: 30 to 10 o'clock.

    Hostetler School Reunion

Like so many of the rural schools in the country the Hostleter School between Baden and New Hamburg was closed in 1965 with a reunion of about 200 former pupils held on July 3. Mr. Earl Hostetler whose great-grandfather, Joseph, came from Somerset, Berks County, Pennsylvania in 1836 and settled in the area, outlined the history of the school. In 1847 Joseph's son, Moses, along with William Bosonberger went to the council of the District of Wellington and asked for aid in building a school. For the first years a certain amount per pupil was collected to pay the teacher's salary and other expenses. The first school, a frame building, was built across the road from the present school on land now owned by Arthur Gingrich, while the building just closed was erected at a cost of $1,523. The school bell was imported at a cost of $19.50 including $6.40 for custom duty, 67 cents for freight and 21 cents for rope.

    _______________________

DELION, FREDERICK was the founder of a family in the New World who was born in what was then Prussia in 1809.

He was first mentioned in a wedding announcement in the Deutsche Canadier on February l844, when he married Magdalena Kühn, of Waterloo.

The issue of February 23, 1844 of the same paper had his professional card:

Dr. Fr. Delion formerly living at Mr. John Eby's, later at Mr. H. Baumann's in Waterloo, has just moved to the house of Mr. Bossenberger, Greenbush, next to Pastor Bindemann.

A news item on January 28, 1848 tells us that he treated his sister-in-law, Miss Salome Kühn for a tapeworm 1/8 to l/4 inches wide - doubtless interesting reading for her neighbors.

Dr. Gottfried H. Schmutter, a recently arrived German physician, distributed handbills containing a virulent attack on Delion, as well as on Dr. John Scott. The injured parties and the newspaper published rebuttals which responded in kind. In the face of the enmity he had aroused, Schmutter soon left for other parts.

Delion's response was in the February 11th. issue of Der Deutsche Canadier:

    Notice

With regard to a public slander about me and another person, from one known as Smutter, in a poster issued by him for distribution, I take the liberty only to explain that this malicious attack against my private life has nothing to do with my practice as a physician, and that in regard to my knowledge as physician, I leave that to the public to decide. That Smutter's poster is an imitation and pretense of the truth from beginning to end, that a malicious character and half deranged intellect has gathered, everyone should perceive for himself.

He made considerable use of the newspapers, notifying the public with regard to daily visits to Waterloo, cautioning of court actions for delinquint accounts, warning trespassers off his property, and admonishing those who had borrowed his books without returning them. He had what must have been a substantial library, some parts of which are still retained by members of his family.

An outspoken announcement appeared in the issue of April 8, 1852 of Der Deutsche Canadiert

I hereby announce that henceforth I will permit medicines to be given out only at my home. The reason therefor may be seen daily at any time in the unpleasant and disagreeable state to be met with in Mr. Henry 'Baumann's house in Berlin.

On January 28, 1853 His card in the Berlin Telegraph gave his location as Woolwich, near Kressler's Tavern. From this time on he conducted a rural practice near Heidelberg, expanding his interests to include some veterinary practice, as is evidenced by one volume of his library which deals with veterinary homeopathy.

He died on October 21, 1869, but the notice provided only the fact of his death. In the case of his wife however, some information is found. She was born in Alsace in 1825, and married in 1844. Some time after his death she moved to Elmira where she lived for twenty five years, until 1907. Of their children still alive were three sons, Frederick, Charles and Henry.
