    • Misfortune: 1878; killed in Railway Accident

    Notes:

Deplorable Railway Accident - A most distressing accident occurred on the Galt and Guelph Railway on Wednesday afternoon last, between Galt and Preston, whereby a fine, stalwart young man named Archibald Hogg, a native of this town, met with his death. For over a year past, Mr. Hogg has been acting as brakesman on this line, and on the afternoon in question was acting in that capacity on the express train for the north passing Galt at 5 o'clock. Shortly after leaving Galt, it would appear that Mr. Hogg's hat blew off and he went forward to the engine to get another one from the fireman. Having got it he proceeded to return to his post on the passenger car, getting on the top of the cars for this purpose; and while walking back towards the last car the train passed beneath the bridge known as "Clemens' Bridge," a short distance out of Preston Station. At this time, the deceased must have been standing or walking upon the top of the cars with his back to the engine, for the evidence points to his having received a terrible blow on the back of the head, while his forehead and check are also cut and bruised. The blow must have knocked the deceased off the car, but he was not missed until the train reached Preston. When it was found that he was not on the train the hands on the train coming south - which crosses the up-train to Preston Station - were notified to keep a look out for him, and he was fond just at the bridge, lying alongside the track. When found he was alive, but insensible. He was brought to Galt on the train and conveyed as speedily as possible to the residence of his brother-in-law, Mr. Peter Campbell, and Dr. Philips summoned. An examination, however, showed that all earthly aid was useless, as Mr. Hogg at the time was dying, and in a very short time he breathed his last. Mr. Hogg was a son of Mr. James Hogg, for so many years a respected resident of this town and vicinity, and was in the 29th year of his age. His parents and relatives have the sympathy of the whole town with them in the severe blow which has been permitted to fall upon them.

Death of a Well Known Resident

There passed away the residence of her son-in-law, William Ira Anderson of the Clyde Road in Beverly, on Tuesday, in her 76th year. Wife of James S. Hogg. With her father, the late Archibald Ramsay, she came to this section from Campbelltown, Argyleshire, Scotland in 1841, the family first settling on the farm on Mill Creek, now occupied by Mr. Me Allister on the 1st concession. A few years after their arrival here, she married Mr. Hogg, and since then, up to a few months ago when failing health made it desirable she should have the care and attention of her daughter, Mrs. Anderson with whom she and her husband have resided, they have been continuous residents. Of the original family, only three are now left, Mrs. Matthew McPhatter, Mrs. Andrew D. Gibson and Mrs. Thomas Heritage, all widely known and respected in this section. Mrs. Hogg's family consisted of four sons and three daughters, of whom all the sons are living except Archibald, whose unfortunate death by accident on the railway, near Preston, will be remembered. The family is scattered, Francis R. , being engaged in lumbering at Parry Harbour, Parry Sound; James George, residing at Teherne, Man, Edward of New York; Mrs. Peter Campbell of Forest, Ontario; and Mrs. Anderson of the Clyde Road. One daughter, Mrs. Henry Van Meter died a number of years ago in Beverly.

The deceased was a most worthy woman in every walk of life and was most justly respected by all and beloved by many. Up to about a year ago, she enjoyed good health but then the failing of life set in and since, there has been a gradual weakening, with suffering borne with great Christian fortitude and patience. The funeral took place on Thursday afternoon to Mount View Cemetery, her body being attended to its last resting place by a large number of sorrowing relatives and friends.
