OLDEST GERMAN PASTOR HERE, REV. A. OBERLANDER, IS DEAD AT AGE OF 76
Passes Away After Illness of Ten Weeks \endash Son Expired Two Weeks Ago.

Rev. Alexander Oberlander, said to be the oldest German clergyman in Syracuse, died at 7 o'clock last evening at his home, No. 705 Butternut street. Two weeks ago Tuesday his son, Dr. Oscar W. Oberlander, was buried. The latter died suddenly on June 25, the same day on which his brother, Rev. Fredolin E. Oberlander of Berlin, Canada, sailed from New York for Naples. He was notified of the doctor's death by wireless.

The father had not been well for some time and the son's death was a great shock to him. The family came to Syracuse from Groso-Brelten-Bach, Thuringer, Germany, in 1860, when Dr. Oberlander was only 1 year old. Syracuse had been the family home ever since.

Mr. Oberlander was 76 years old. He had occupied the pulpit of Mount Tabor Evangelical Lutheran Church in Butternut street, and his son, Rev. F. E. Oberlander, followed him to the pastorate. The older clergyman was active in a movement to establish Mount Tabor Orphan Asylum.

Surviving are five sons, Alexander E., Charles, Hartman, Rev. Fredolin E. and Walter B. Oberlander, and four daughters, Mrs. Louise Boullee of this city, Mrs. Adam Dreher of Cullman, Ala., Mrs. George E. Potter and Miss Meta Oberlander of Berlin, Canada. The funeral arrangements have not been completed.

    Notes:

Death of Mrs. M. A. Oberlander.

Mrs. Matilda Augusta Oberlander, wife of Rev. A. Oberlander, died last evening at 7 o'clock, after a lingering illness caused by a cancer. The deceased has suffered with the painful disease since January and has been under the treatment of her son, Dr. Oberlander, and Drs. Van Duyn and --- as consulting physicians. The deceased was born at Grosebroltenbach, Thueringen, Germany, February 18, 1835, and came to America with what constituted the family 30 years ago. She has resided in Syracuse since 1869. She was the mother of fourteen children; ten of whom survive her. Mrs. Oberlander was well known among the Germans of the city for her kind heart and generosity to the poor. It was in her mind that the building of a German Orphan Home in this city first originated. After disclosing her idea to other charitable women a definite plan was adopted, the result of which was the building of the Tabor Orphan Home, which now stands on Gilbert's Hill in the Second ward. This institution has at present 20 inmates. The funeral will be private in accordance with her last wish and desire. It will be held on Friday morning from her late residence, No. 87½ Butternut street. All the German Lutheran pastors will be invited to officiate. Interment will be made in the family plot at Woodlawn.
